Most US Muslims feel targeted by terror policies (AP)

WASHINGTON ? More than half of Muslim Americans in a new poll say government anti-terrorism policies single them out for increased surveillance and monitoring, and many report increased cases of name-calling, threats and harassment by airport security, law enforcement officers and others.

Still, most Muslim Americans say they are satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. and rate their communities highly as places to live.

The survey by the Pew Research Center, one of the most exhaustive ever of the country's Muslims, finds no signs of rising alienation or anger among Muslim-Americans despite recent U.S. government concerns about homegrown Islamic terrorism and controversy over the building of mosques.

"This confirms what we've said all along: American Muslims are well integrated and happy, but with a kind of lingering sense of being besieged by growing anti-Muslim sentiment in our society," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington, D.C.-based Muslim civil rights group.

"People contact us every day about concerns they've had, particularly with law enforcement authorities in this post-9/11 era," he said.

Muslim extremists hijacked four passenger planes on Sept. 11, 2001, crashing them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pa.

In all, 52 percent of Muslim Americans surveyed said their group is singled out by government for terrorist surveillance. Almost as many ? 43 percent ? reported they had personally experienced harassment in the past year, according to the poll released Tuesday.

That 43 percent share of people reporting harassment is up from 40 percent in 2007, the first time Pew polled Muslim Americans.

Asked to identify in what ways they felt bias, about 28 percent said they had been treated or viewed with suspicion by people, while 22 percent said they were called offensive names. About 21 percent said they were singled out by airport security because they were Muslim, while another 13 percent said they were targeted by other law enforcement officials. Roughly 6 percent said they had been physically threatened or attacked.

On the other hand, the share of Muslim Americans who view U.S. anti-terror policies as "sincere" efforts to reduce international terrorism now surpasses those who view them as insincere ? 43 percent to 41 percent. Four years ago, during the presidency of George W. Bush, far more viewed U.S. anti-terrorism efforts as insincere than sincere ? 55 percent to 26 percent.

The vast majority of Muslim Americans ? 79 percent ? rate their communities as either "excellent" or "good" places to live, even among many who reported an act of vandalism against a mosque or a controversy over the building of an Islamic center in their neighborhoods.

They also are now more likely to say they are satisfied with the current direction of the country ? 56 percent, up from 38 percent in 2007. That is in contrast to the general U.S. public, whose satisfaction has dropped from 32 percent to 23 percent.

Andrew Kohut, Pew president, said in an interview that Muslim Americans' overall level of satisfaction was striking.

"I was concerned about a bigger sense of alienation, but there was not," Kohut said, contrasting the U.S. to many places in Europe where Muslims have become more separatist. "You don't see any indication of brewing negativity. When you look at their attitudes, these are still middle-class, mainstream people who want to be loyal to America."

The latest numbers come amid increased U.S. attention on the risks of homegrown terrorism after the London transit bombings in 2005. The problem has been especially pressing for President Barack Obama, with federal investigators citing a greater risk of attacks by a "lone wolf" or small homegrown cells following the 2009 Fort Hood shooting and the Times Square bombing attempt last year.

Such terror warnings have stirred raw emotions as the U.S. struggles to talk about religion in the context of terrorism.

Tensions erupted last summer over plans to build a mosque near the Ground Zero site in New York City after critics assailed it as an insult to the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., held House hearings earlier this year to examine whether American Muslims are becoming "radicalized" to attack the U.S., declaring that U.S. Muslims are doing too little to fight terror.

The Associated Press reported last week that with CIA guidance, the New York Police Department dispatched undercover officers into minority neighborhoods, scrutinized imams and gathered intelligence on cab drivers and food cart vendors, jobs often done by Muslims.

It is now common in U.S. mosques for Muslims to preface public remarks by saying that they know the government is eavesdropping but Muslims have nothing to hide.

Still, one factor behind the somewhat upbeat sentiment of Muslim Americans is the 2008 election of Obama, who pledged to improve relations with the Muslim world. Muslim Americans who vote largely identify themselves as Democrats, and fully 76 percent of those surveyed say they approve of Obama's job performance, compared with 15 percent in 2007 who approved of Bush's performance.

Regarding possible terror risks, about 21 percent of Muslim Americans say there is "a great deal" or "a fair amount" of support for extremism in their communities, according to the Pew survey. About 81 percent of Muslim Americans separately say suicide bombings and other forms of violence against civilians are never justified in order to defend Islam, and growing numbers also express an unfavorable view of al-Qaida ? 81 percent compared with 68 percent in 2007.

In all, nearly half say that Muslim leaders in the U.S. must do more to speak out against Islamic extremists, compared with one-third who say Muslim-American leaders have done enough.

The findings offer an uncommon portrait of the Muslim American community, which Pew estimates at roughly 2.75 million, or nearly 1 percent of the U.S. population. By law, the Census Bureau does not ask about people's religions, so extensive details about Muslim American views, their size and demographics as a group are not widely known.

Mostly foreign-born immigrants, Muslim Americans are significantly younger, more likely to be male and more racially diverse than the public as a whole. They express a broad willingness to adopt U.S. customs and are just as likely as the rest of Americans to hold a college degree.

For example:

_When asked to choose, nearly half of Muslims in the U.S. say they think of themselves first as Muslim, rather than as American. Roughly 60 percent say that most Muslims come to the U.S. to adopt the American way of life and see no conflict between being a devout Muslim and living in a modern society.

_Foreign-born Muslims in the U.S. come from at least 77 different countries, led by Pakistan, Iran, the Palestinian territories, Bangladesh, Yemen, Jordan and Iraq. About 70 percent of foreign-born Muslims report they are now naturalized U.S. citizens, higher than the 47 percent rate for the broader immigrant population in the U.S.

_Muslim Americans are more likely than Muslims in the Middle East to say a way can be found for the state of Israel to exist so that Palestinian rights are addressed ? 62 percent say this, compared with a range of 13 to 40 percent in other countries surveyed by Pew. That 62 percent share compares with 67 percent among the general U.S. public who hold this view.

The Pew survey is based on telephone interviews with 1,033 Muslims in the U.S., conducted in English, Arabic, Farsi or Urdu from April 14 to July 22. Subjects were chosen at random, from a separate list of households including some with Muslim-sounding names, and from Muslim households that had answered previous surveys.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Samsung launches mobile instant messaging tool (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Samsung Electronics Co said on Monday it would launch a mobile instant messaging tool in its latest push to attract more consumers to its handsets and challenge rivals such as Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.

The new service, called ChatON, will be available from October and preinstalled in Samsung's feature phones as well as smartphones running on its own bada operating system and Google's Android software, it said.

With the move, Samsung enters an already crowded mobile messaging market, which telecoms carriers fear will hit revenue from profitable text messaging services.

Apple plans to roll out iMessage, enabling the millions of iPhone and iPad users to send messages to one another over the Internet at no cost, and RIM aims to leverage the popularity of its BlackBerry Messenger with a new music service.

Samsung's messaging tool will work across all major smartphone platforms including iPhone and BlackBerry and will allow users to send text, images, and hand-written notes, as well as chat in groups and share video clips.

It plans to expand the offering to all Android-based smartphones and tablets, and it will also be available for download to consumers using rival Android, iPhone and BlackBerry models.

Foods rich in protein, dairy products help dieters preserve muscle and lose belly fat

Foods rich in protein, dairy products help dieters preserve muscle and lose belly fat

Monday, August 29, 2011

New research suggests a higher-protein, lower-carbohydrate energy-restricted diet has a major positive impact on body composition, trimming belly fat and increasing lean muscle, particularly when the proteins come from dairy products.

The study, published in the September issue of the Journal of Nutrition, compared three groups of overweight and obese, but otherwise healthy, premenopausal women. Each consumed either low, medium or high amounts of dairy foods coupled with higher or lower amounts of protein and carbohydrates.

The women exercised seven days per week for four months, a routine that included five days of aerobic exercise and two days of circuit weightlifting.

According to the researchers, there were identical total weight losses among the groups, but the higher-protein, high-dairy group experienced greater whole-body fat and abdomen fat losses, greater lean mass gains and greater increases in strength.

The tissue composition, exclusively fat, of the weight the women lost has profound implications for longer-term health, say the researchers.

"One hundred per cent of the weight lost in the higher-protein, high-dairy group was fat. And the participants gained muscle mass, which is a major change in body composition," says Andrea Josse, lead author of the study and a graduate student in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. "The preservation or even gain of muscle is very important for maintaining metabolic rate and preventing weight regain, which can be major problem for many seeking to lose weight."

Researchers found the lower-protein, low-dairy group lost about a pound and half of muscle whereas the lower-protein, medium dairy group lost almost no muscle. In marked contrast, the higher-protein, high-dairy group actually gained a pound and half of muscle, representing a three-pound difference between the low- and high-dairy groups.

On top of the muscle mass differences, the higher-protein, high-dairy group lost twice as much belly fat than the lower-protein, low-dairy group.

"Fat in the abdomen is thought to be especially bad for cardiovascular and metabolic health, and it seems?according to what we found in this study?increasing calcium and protein in the diet may help to further promote loss of fat from the worst storage area in the body," says Josse.

"A very important point is that these changes were not captured by simple measures of body weight or body mass index, which are the most commonly used measures of dietary 'success'" adds Stuart Phillips, a professor in the Department of Kinesiology. "These women also got fitter and stronger, which greatly reduces their risk of disease."

Instead of this, try to be as natural as you can so that you don?t have to deal with uncomfortable situation with your listeners. However if you behave in a too laid-back or lazy manner, this can also create a bad impression. Don?t Brag: Boasting about who you are and what makes you so great is the last thing you want to do in a podcast. You may find you need to make a small introduction, but talking on and on about yourself won?t make your readers happy. Keep in mind at all times that the people want receive some value to from listening to your podcast. They are the focus, not you. Going on and on about your expertise in your niche or how you can save the economy to your listeners is something you shouldn?t do at all. They will be able to see if you are any good. That?s all it takes.

Add Some Humor: There?s something about a whimsical and light-hearted podcast; it not only attracts your attention but manages to convey information without boring you out. It is not only the quality of your content that is important, but also how well you deliver the information through the podcast. Adding a bit of humor here and there won?t kill you ? it will actually make your listeners enjoy your podcast and have fun. Not only that, if you aren?t having a good time when you make the podcast, it will show and that obviously is not a good thing. You don?t want to seem compulsive in doing this, but you do want your listeners to feel that you know what you are talking about. You will reel them in if your podcast offers your listeners a good feeling as well as a dose of the right kind of humor.

The truth is that creating an effective podcast is really more about being persistent than intelligent. Being smart in your approach is one thing, but you also need to stick to your goal or you won?t be able to achieve real success. So what are you waiting for? For positive results as soon as possible, start making the above tips work for you. Unfortunately, space did not permit a full treatment of this very important topic. You can easily spend weeks researching Pro Flight Simulator and still not cover all the ground work. If you want to get the most from your work, then it is a must to learn all you can. The good news for you is that a significant amount of the effort has actually been done.

Subways to stop running in NYC ahead of Irene

The nation's biggest subway system was ordered shut down as Hurricane Irene bore down Friday, potentially paralyzing movement for millions of carless people even as more than 300,000 were told to evacuate to safer places.

The unprecedented orders from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, which affect New Yorkers from the Bronx's most distant reaches down through Manhattan and out to the beaches of Brooklyn and Queens, dealt the congested metropolis a formidable logistical challenge that raised more questions than it resolved:

Where are all of those people in New York's flood-prone areas supposed to go? And, more pointedly, how are they going to get there ? especially since many don't own a car?

Subways, buses and trains in one of the world's largest public transportation systems were to stop running at noon Saturday. Bridges and tunnels also could be closed as the storm approaches, clogging traffic in an already congested city.

Officials hoped most residents would stay with family and friends, and for the rest the city opened nearly 100 shelters with a capacity of 71,000 people.

Many people scoffed at the danger and vowed to ride it out at home.

"How can I get out of Coney Island? What am I going to do? Run with this walker?" said 82-year-old Abe Feinstein, who has lived since the early 1960s on the eighth floor of a building that overlooks the famed Coney Island boardwalk.

He said he watched Hurricane Gloria in 1985 from an apartment down the street.

"I think I have nothing to worry about," he said. "I've been through bad weather before. It's just not going to be a problem for us."

Irene was expected to make landfall in North Carolina on Saturday, then roll up the I-95 corridor reaching New York on Sunday. A hurricane warning was issued for the city Friday afternoon, the first time that's happened since Gloria.

If the storm stays on its current path, skyscraper windows could shatter, tree limbs would fall and debris would be tossed around. Streets in southern tip of the city could be under a few feet of water, and police readied rescue boats but said they wouldn't go out if conditions were poor.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was confident people would get out of the storm's way.

"We do not have the manpower to go door-to-door and drag people out of their homes," he said. "Nobody's going to get fined. Nobody's going to go to jail. But if you don't follow this, people might die."

Several New York landmarks were under the evacuation order, including the Battery Park City area, where tourists catch ferries to the Statue of Liberty. Construction was stopping throughout the city, and workers at the site of the World Trade Center were dismantling a crane and securing equipment. Bloomberg said there would be no effect on the Sept. 11 memorial opening the day after the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Sporting events, concerts and even Broadway were going dark.

In Lower Manhattan, Milton Melendez and partner Shea Collins were headed to uptown to a neighborhood north of Little Italy. Melendez, who survived Hurricane David as a child in the Dominican Republic, was worried about windows being blown out at their apartment. Collins was a little more blase.

"This is the same thing as a snowstorm," she said. "They say there's going to be 10 feet and there's four inches."

Bloomberg weathered criticism after a Dec. 26 storm dumped nearly two feet of snow that seemed to catch officials by surprise. Subway trains, buses and ambulances got stuck in the snow, some for hours, and streets were impassable for days. Bloomberg ultimately called it an "inadequate and unacceptable" response.

This time officials weren't taking any chances. Transit officials said they can't run once sustained winds reach 39 mph, and they need eight hours to move trains and equipment to safety.

The subway system won't reopen until at least Monday, after pumps remove water from flooded stations. Even on a dry day, about 200 pump rooms remove between 13 million to 15 million gallons of water that seeps into the tunnels deep underground.

Still, not everyone was worried.

Probir Roy, a Bangladesh native who was waiting for a bus to New Jersey, went through a tsunami when he was 10.

"I'm not scared. It's my wife," said the Wall Street manager, who was traveling to Clifton, N.J. "I'm going by bus. She took my car."

There are about 1.6 million people in Manhattan and about 6.8 million in the city's other four boroughs.

Bloomberg warned residents not to be fooled by the sunny weather Friday and said police officers would use loudspeakers on patrol vehicles to spread the word about the evacuation.

At the Red Hook Lobster Pound facing the New York Harbor, owner Ralph Gorham had about $26,000 worth of lobster stored in a refrigerator, plus a tank filled with live crustaceans from Maine. "I'm staying," he said. "But if we get, say, a few feet of water in here, it'll be a huge loss."

For those with cars, parking was available at the city's evacuation centers. From there, each family will be assigned to a shelter and taken there by bus.

In the Queens community of the Rockaways, more than 111,000 people live on a barrier peninsula connected to the city by two bridges and to Long Island to the west.

The city's public transit system carries about 5 million passengers on an average weekday, and the entire system has never before been halted because of natural disaster. It was seriously hobbled by an August 2007 rainstorm that disabled or delayed every one of the city's subway lines. And it was shut down after the 9/11 attacks and during a 2005 strike.

"It's possible to evacuate without going very far," said John Nielsen-Gammon, a Texas A&M University meteorologist who has been involved in disaster planning in his role as the state climatologist. "The big wild card for New York is the fact that nobody there is used to a hurricane and can't rely on common sense or past experience as a guide. And what we learned from evacuations in Houston is that people rely on their friends and their own experience as much as, or more than, they rely on public officials."

Glenn Corbett, a professor who teaches in the emergency management program at the city's John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said he was startled at how early the city planned to halt subways.

"You can tell people to do things, and that doesn't actually mean they're going to do it until the last possible moment. And then what?" he said.

In the last 200 years, New York has seen only a few significant hurricanes. In September of 1821, a hurricane raised tides by 13 feet in an hour and flooded the southernmost tip of Manhattan in an area that now includes Wall Street and the World Trade Center memorial. In 1938, a storm dubbed the Long Island Express came ashore about 75 miles east of the city on neighboring Long Island and then hit New England, killing 700 people and leaving 63,000 homeless. And in 1944, an area was flooded in Midtown, where Times Square, Broadway theaters and the Empire State Building are located.

Workers at the North Cove marina were busy anchoring down boats or getting ready to set sail up the Hudson River. A number of yachts were leaving.

"It's going to be boats versus concrete and I don't think fiberglass is going to win," said Elizabeth Pellatte, the deck supervisor and assistant to the owner of the $35 million Remember When yacht. "It will be worth the $10,000 in gas to save $1 million in damage."

Ordinarily, the boat is based in Florida.

"We spend summers up here usually to escape the hurricanes but this time, one followed us," she said.

Get an Estimate on Saving With a Mortgage Refinance Calculator ...

Posted by admin on August 27th, 2011

Put away the paper and pencil. Stop racking your brain over how much you could save on your home loan and let your computer do the work for you through a mortgage refinance calculator. Here is how to get the answers to all of your questions.

Is Refinancing Right for You?

A mortgage refinance loan calculator can help you find out how much you might save plus give you helpful insights on making sense of all the numbers. Simply enter in a few figures, such as the amount of your mortgage, your home appraisal value, mortgage term, and income tax rate, and let the mortgage refinance calculator go to work. In just seconds, you?ll have an estimate that can help you make a confident informed decision regarding the refinancing of your home loan.

What It All Means

Many homeowners can feel overwhelmed by all the numbers and confusing real estate terms. Fortunately, a good mortgage refinance calculator can simplify things. You?ll learn what the new interest rate would be if you refinanced today as well as other helpful details such as your monthly savings in regards to principal and interest and PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance), if applicable. You can even use the mortgage refinance loan calculator to see what your monthly PMI payment would be, as well as how much goes toward the principal and how much you pay in interest under the refinancing terms. Using a refinance calculator is the ideal way to compare the numbers on your current mortgage versus an estimate for refinancing under a new rate.

Important Points to Keep in Mind

At its core, a mortgage refinance calculator is a tool, designed to help you crunch the numbers and give you the knowledge to make an informed decision on refinancing. Some of the numbers may depend on current home loan interest rates on that day due to daily interest rate fluctuations. Remember, a mortgage refinance loan calculator cannot evaluate all the factors that enter into determining the loan that might be best for you. That?s why it?s important to speak with a home loan advisor about your specific needs and qualifications before you make a final decision. Having the advice of a professional can help you better understand what options are available to you should you decide to move forward with a refinance. However, using an online mortgage refinance calculator is a great first step to a loan that could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Study Says Nickel Nanoparticles may Contribute to Lung Cancer

Nanoparticles of nickel activate a cellular pathway that may contribute to human lung cancer, reveals research.

"Nanotechnology has tremendous potential and promise for many applications," said Agnes Kane, chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. "But the lesson is that we have to learn to be able to design them more intelligently and, if we recognize the potential hazards, to take adequate precautions."

Kane is the senior author of the study published in advance online this month in the journal Toxicological Sciences.

Nickel nanoparticles had already been shown to be harmful, but not in terms of cancer. Kane and her team of pathologists, engineers and chemists found evidence that ions on the surface of the particles are released inside human epithelial lung cells to jumpstart a pathway called HIF-1 alpha. Normally the pathway helps trigger genes that support a cell in times of low oxygen supply, a problem called hypoxia, but it is also known to encourage tumor cell growth.

"Nickel exploits this pathway, in that it tricks the cell into thinking there's hypoxia but it's really a nickel ion that activates this pathway," said Kane, whose work is supported by a National Institues of Health Superfund Research Program Grant. "By activating this pathway it may give premalignant tumor cells a head start."

Size matters

The research team, led by postdoctoral research associate and first author Jodie Pietruska, exposed human lung cells to nanoscale particles of metallic nickel and nickel oxide, and larger microscale particles of metallic nickel. A key finding is that while the smaller particles set off the HIF-1 alpha pathway, the larger metallic nickel particles proved much less problematic.

(AP) ? Tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada were jolted Tuesday by the strongest earthquake to strike the East Coast since World War II. Three weeks before the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, office workers poured out of New York skyscrapers and the Pentagon, relieved it was nothing more sinister than an act of nature.

There were no known deaths or serious injuries, but cracks appeared in the National Cathedral and three capstones broke off its tower. Windows shattered and grocery stores were wrecked in Virginia, where the quake was centered. The White House and Capitol were partly evacuated.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake registered magnitude 5.8. By West Coast standards, that is mild. But the East Coast is not accustomed to earthquakes at all, and this one unsettled some of the nation's biggest population centers.

In New York and Washington, people said their thoughts were of an explosion or terrorist attack. In some cases, workers in Washington mentioned the tremors in phone calls to colleagues in New York, and seconds later, the shaking reached there, too.

"We thought it was a bomb at first because everyone has 9/11 on the brain and that it's so close to September and the 10th anniversary," said Cathy McDonald, who works in an IRS office in downtown Washington.

Hundreds of people spilled out of the federal courthouse blocks from ground zero after the quake struck just before 2 p.m. EDT. Workers in the Empire State Building rushed into the streets, some having descended dozens of flights of stairs.

"I thought we'd been hit by an airplane," said one worker, Marty Wiesner.

Adrian Ollivierre, an accountant who was in his office on the 60th floor when the shaking began, said: "I thought I was having maybe a heart attack, and I saw everybody running. I think what it is, is the paranoia that happens from 9/11, and that's why I'm still out here ? because, I'm sorry, I'm not playing with my life."

The quake was felt as far north as Toronto, as far west as Indiana and Kentucky and as far south as Atlanta and Savannah, Ga. It was also felt on Martha's Vineyard off Massachusetts, where President Barack Obama, who is vacationing there, was getting ready to tee off in a round of golf.

The White House said there were no reports of major damage to the nation's infrastructure, including airports and nuclear facilities. Two nuclear reactors at the North Anna Power Station in Virginia were automatically taken off line by safety systems, said Roger Hannah, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The plant is in the same county as the quake's epicenter, about 80 miles southwest of Washington and 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Va.

The Park Service closed all monuments and memorials on the National Mall, and ceiling tiles fell at Reagan National Airport outside Washington. Many nonessential workers in Washington were sent home for the day. The Capitol was reopened by late afternoon for people to retrieve their things.

At the Pentagon, a low rumbling built until the building itself was shaking, and people ran into the corridors of the complex. The shaking continued, to shouts of "Evacuate! Evacuate!" The main damage to the building, the largest single workspace for the federal government, came from a broken water pipe.

The National Cathedral said it had sustained "significant damage," with three capstones, each shaped like a fleur-de-lis, breaking off the main tower. Cracks appeared in the flying buttresses around the apse at the cathedral's east end, the oldest part of the building.

"Everyone here is safe," the cathedral said on its official Twitter feed. "Please pray for the Cathedral as there has been some damage."

Around Mineral, Va., a small town close to the epicenter, people milled around in their lawns, on sidewalks and parking lots, still rattled and leery of re-entering buildings. All over town, masonry was crumpled, and there were stores with shelf contents strewn on the floor. Several display windows at businesses in the tiny heart of downtown were broken and lay in jagged shards.

Carmen Bonano, who has a 1-year-old granddaughter, sat on the porch of her family's white-frame house, its twin brick chimneys destroyed. Her voice still quavered with fear.

"The fridge came down off the wall and things started falling. I just pushed the refrigerator out of the way, grabbed the baby and ran," she said.

By the standards of the West Coast, where earthquakes are much more common, the Virginia quake was not strong. Since 1900, there have been 50 quakes of magnitude 5.8 or greater in California alone. Quakes in the East tend to be felt across a much broader area.

"The waves are able to reverberate and travel pretty happily out for miles," said USGS seismologist Susan Hough.

The Geological Survey put the quake in its yellow alert category, meaning there was potential for local damage but relatively little economic damage.

The agency said the quake was 3.7 miles beneath the surface, but scientists said they may never be able to map the exact fault. Aftershocks may help to outline it, said Rowena Lohman, a seismologist at Cornell University. There have been a few aftershocks. Two were magnitudes 2.2 and 2.8 but a later one measured 4.8.

The last quake of equal power to strike the East Coast was in New York in 1944. The largest East Coast quake on record was a 7.3 that hit South Carolina in 1886. In 1897, a magnitude-5.9 quake was recorded at Giles County, Va., the largest on record in that state.

A 5.8-magnitude quake releases as much energy as almost eight kilotons of TNT, about half the power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. The earthquake that devastated Japan earlier this year released more than 60,000 times as much energy as Tuesday's.

The Virginia quake came a day after an earthquake in Colorado toppled groceries off shelves and caused minor damage to homes in the southern part of the state and in northern New Mexico. No injuries were reported as aftershocks continued Tuesday.

For the most part, the East Coast quake was a curiosity, at least after the initial fear faded away. It disrupted what was, for millions of people, an ordinary workday.

In New York, the police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, was in a meeting with top deputies planning security for the upcoming anniversary when the shaking started. The district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance, was starting a news conference about the dismissal of the sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund. Reporters and aides began rushing out the door until it became clear it was subsiding.

On Wall Street, the floor of the New York Stock Exchange did not shake, officials said, but the Dow Jones industrial average sank 60 points soon after the quake struck. The Dow began rising again a half-hour later and finished the day up 322 points.

Amtrak said its trains along the Northeast Corridor between Baltimore and Washington were at reduced speeds and crews were inspecting stations and railroad infrastructure before returning to normal.

In Charleston, W.Va., hundreds of workers left the state Capitol building and employees at other downtown office buildings were asked to leave temporarily.

"The whole building shook," said Jennifer Bundy, a spokeswoman for the state Supreme Court. "You could feel two different shakes. Everybody just kind of came out on their own."

In Ohio, office buildings swayed in Columbus and Cincinnati. The press box at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, shook, as did the stadium at the consolation game of the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.

John Gurlach, air traffic controller at the Morgantown Municipal Airport in West Virginia, was in a 40-foot-tall tower when the earth trembled.

"There were two of us looking at each other saying, 'What's that?'" he said, even as a commuter plane was landing. "It was noticeably shaking. It felt like a B-52 unloading."

Immediately, the phone rang from the nearest airport in Clarksburg, and a computer began spitting out green strips of paper ? alerts from other airports in New York and Washington issuing ground stops "due to earthquake."

The earthquake caused a stir online, where people posted to Facebook and Twitter within seconds and described what they had felt. The keywords in posts, or hashtags, included "DCquake," ''VAquake" and "Columbusquake," an indication of how broadly the quake was experienced.

Quake photos and videos also made the rounds. A handful were authentic. Many more were not ? they were favorite earthquake scenes from Hollywood blockbusters or footage of people shaking their glasses and plates at an Olive Garden.

On the West Coast, where the last major quake to strike a metro area was a magnitude-6.7 event that ravaged greater Los Angeles in 1994, what happened back East was cause for outright mockery.

"Californians yawn, shrug and go back to their iced lattes," Marcus Beer, who reviews video games for a local news broadcaster, said in a Twitter post.

Alcoa Kawneer and AIAS Challenge Students of Architecture and Design to Create a Stadium, Arena or Civic Center By Betsy Kraat

NEW YORK, NY--For the sixth consecutive year, The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and Alcoa?s Kawneer Company, Inc. invite students of architecture and design to submit projects for the annual Student Design Competition.

Sponsored by Kawneer and administered by AIAS, the 2011 competition will challenge students to design a stadium, civic center or arena while learning about building materials, specifically architectural aluminum building products and systems.

?Stadiums and arenas often serve as cornerstone of our community ? places where we can come together to celebrate or rally in a time of need,? said Joshua Caulfield, Executive Director for the AIAS. ?Each year, this competition provides architecture and design students with an invaluable opportunity to not only expand their experience, but also learn about new techniques and products as well as have their work viewed by several industry influencers. We are pleased to work with Kawneer again on such a beneficial competition.?

This year?s competition requires participants to select a city and outdoor sport of their choosing and create an environmentally friendly facility that will serve the community as well as serve alternative venues to make full use of the structure. Additionally, students will be tasked to design a space that is resilient in all forms of weather, including hurricanes and tropical storms of the Gulf, while seating a minimum of 25,000 patrons. Competition objectives also include building knowledge about materials, products and techniques that can help earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED?) certification points while creating a fun and exciting atmosphere for sports viewing. Submissions will be evaluated based on ingenuity and originality, as well as appropriate use of sustainable products and overall design clarity.

The competition receives several hundred submissions from dozens of schools and universities throughout the United States, with many universities adopting the competition as a class project. Three winning designs and three honorable mentions will be selected by the competition?s jury, comprised of industry professionals with experience relevant to the year?s topic. The total amount of prize money for winning entries will be $7,225. In previous years students were challenged to design a hurricane resistant campus-based recreation center, a library for the 21st Century, a municipal courthouse and a school.

Students interested in participating in the competition must register no later than October 1, 2011. Submissions must be made digitally via the competition website on or before November 1, 2011. Winners for the 2011 competition will be announced no later than December 1, 2011 via the competition and AIAS websites. The winning projects will be displayed at the 2011 AIAS FORUM in Phoenix, AZ, December 29, 2011 ? January 1, 2011 and at the 2012 AIA National Convention in Washington, D.C., in June issue of Crit, the Journal of the AIAS.

?Each year Kawneer looks forward to this competition and seeing the creative and unique design ideas brought forth by students from across the nation,? said Kimberly Ferro, Vice President, Marketing and Product Development for Kawneer North America. ?We are committed to providing educational opportunities and offering products, solutions and tools that help architects of all ages make their visions a reality.?

Tips to Help You Manage Your Personal Finances | Make Money Online ...

Posted on August 21, 2011 |

Effectively managing your personal finances begins with understanding debt. Debt is anything you owe ? student loans, auto loans, credit card debts, mortgages ? that have a fixed monthly payment. So-called ?good? debt is any debt that has a long-term value, such as a mortgage, or any debt where the usefulness of the purchase lasts as long, or longer, than the repayment of the debt, like a car or some electronics. Understanding debt and how it effects your personal finances can keep your financial life on track and healthy.

Most folks get into personal financial trouble by allowing debt to get out of control. Their payments swallow up too much of their monthly income, or end up lasting far longer than the life of the goods purchased, so that they spend years paying off a dinner and a movie with some girl they can?t remember. Out-of-control debt is the number one reason clients state for seeking credit counseling. So, the first thing to effectively managing your personal finances is to understand debt, handle it responsibly and avoid its pitfalls.

Another step to effectively managing your personal finances is to prepare a budget and use it. To do this, you first have to know how much money is coming in and how it goes out. Tracking expenses for a month or two (a typical, ordinary month, not around a holiday or period of illness or injury) will allow you to get a long, hard honest look at the state of your personal fortune (or lack of one, as the case may be.) Then, once you know how much you?ve got and where it all goes, you can prioritize your spending. Most personal finance coaches and counselors will tell you that your biggest expense should be your living expense ? mortgage or rent ? followed by travel and transportation (car loans, fuel, insurance, bus, train and taxi fares, etc.) These two should take top priority because you must have a place to live, and presumably you are using that transportation to travel to and from some sort of employment allowing you to earn the money you?re now spending. Next are utilities and groceries, because you have to eat and keep the lights, gas, water and phone working. What you have left over is your ?disposable? income.

Disposable income is the money you have to save, invest and spend. Healthy personal finances always include some sort of savings plan. Why? Because you may not always be in the rosy situation you are in now and an emergency fund comes in quite handy then. A savings account of some sort also allows you to purchase those big ticket items that many overload your credit cards , like stereos and vacations. Think of it as paying yourself twice, once when you put the funds into the account and again when you withdraw them later.

Managing your personal finances isn?t that difficult if you control your credit spending, stick to your monthly budget and follow some sort of savings plan. Having healthy personal finances is almost as important as having a healthy body and mind!

Kardashian, Humphries wed in TV-friendly ceremony (AP)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? Kris Humphries has officially caught up with Kim Kardashian. The basketball pro and the reality star are husband and wife.

Kardashian, 30, and Humphries, 26, tied the knot Saturday night in the exclusive Montecito area near Santa Barbara, Calif., Kardashian publicist Jill Fritzo told People magazine and E!

The ceremony will be televised as a two-part special on E! in October.

It is the first marriage for Humphries, who last played for the NBA's New Jersey Nets, and the second for Kardashian, star of E!'s "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." She was married to music producer Damon Thomas from 2000 to 2004.

People and E! reported Kardashian wore an ivory gown designed by Vera Wang. Her stepfather, Bruce Jenner, walked her down the aisle in front of 440 guests, including Demi Lovato, Mario Lopez, Eva Longoria, Sugar Ray Leonard, Alan Thicke and Lindsay Lohan.

Kardashian's gown had a tulle skirt, basque waist and Chantilly lace, and was matched with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, the media outlets reported. The bride planned to wear two other Wang dresses before the night and the party were over.

Her sisters and TV co-stars Kourtney Kardashian, 32, and Khloe Kardashian, 27, served as co-maids of honor.

The groom wore a white peak lapel tuxedo jacket, black tuxedo pants and, a white shirt and a white bow tie, all designed by Ermenegildo Zegna.

Kardashian and Humphries began dating late last year and announced their engagement in May. He proposed on bended knee with a 20.5-carat ring by spelling out "Will you marry me?" in rose petals.

Since the couple's engagement, the pending nuptials have provided constant fodder for the media and the Kardashians, who posted updates about the wedding on their blogs and websites.

The waves of hype that preceded the ceremony didn't seem to faze the bride. Earlier this week, Kardashian said she was "totally calm" about the much-hyped ceremony.

"I think that freak-out moment kind of already passed," she said at a party Wednesday to launch her new clothing line at Sears.
