SoundBite Communications acquires 2ergo Americas

Arlington, Va. ? SoundBite Communications, a Massachusetts-based developer of cloud-based customer communications tools, said on Monday it has paid $3.8 million to acquire Arlington, Mass.-based 2ergo Americas from U.K. mobile business and marketing technology firm 2ergo Group.

SoundBite said the acquisition bolsters its mobile marketing offering with self-service SMS, mobile coupons, QR code and mobile web platforms.

As part of the deal, SoundBite has become an authorized reseller of 2ergo Group?s podifi contactless redemption and in-store location service, which includes mobile couponing, loyalty, payment and in-store check-in capabilities. ?This acquisition? will help establish SoundBite as a top player in mobile marketing,? said Jim Milton, the president and CEO of SoundBite.

2ergo Americas is now part of SoundBite?s Mobile Services business, which the company established following its acquisition of SmartReply last June. Seventeen employees have joined SoundBite.

Transformative artist Ken Price dies in NM at 77 (omg!)

TAOS, N.M. (AP) ? Ken Price, an internationally known artist whose glazed and painted clay blurred the lines between ceramics and sculpture, is being remembered for his humor, his love of natural shapes and for the long hours he spent in the studio perfecting what became a style all his own.

Family and friends gathered at his studio in Taos to share their stories Sunday following his death Friday morning at his home in Taos. By Monday, the makeshift memorial of flowers and notes at The Harwood Museum of Art, where one of his installations is on exhibit, continued to grow.

A hand-written note tucked under one of the bouquets summed it up: "A life well lived..."

Price's death at age 77 was first reported by The Los Angeles Times. His family, friends and fellow artist Larry Bell confirmed Price's death for The Associated Press on Monday.

Price had struggled with tongue and throat cancer for several years, but friends said he continued working despite being ill.

Inside his studio, there were works in progress and current notes and drawings lying on his desk. His son Jackson said work still continues on fabricating some of the colors and forms proofed by Price over the last five years into large-scale outdoor sculptures.

"He was just one of those artists who just worked. That's what he did, that's what he lived and breathed," said Jina Brenneman, a ceramist herself and the curator at The Harwood. It was Price who inspired her to come to Taos.

His son agreed, calling him the master of clay.

"You would be hard pressed to find anybody who manipulates clay better than him anywhere in the world," Jackson Price said. "For aspiring artists, he's inspiring based on how prolific he is. He's worked every day for 50 years. That's what he did. He was into family and work."

The debate among art critics and historians about whether Price's colorful, organic pieces were more sculpture than ceramic art was not something that concerned him as he worked in his studios in Taos and Venice, Calif.

One of the reasons he was able to elevate ceramics to such a high level is because the medium eventually became an irrelevant part of his creative process, Brenneman said.

Bits of his personality, particularly his humor, also carried through to his work, said friend and fellow artist Larry Bell.

"The thing that was amazing about Kenny is how inventive he was with form and surface and color. He just invented these totally goofy shapes and then caressed them until they became just magnificent little objects," Bell said.

"He just kept working on extending that kind of direction ? that very personal, intimate relationship with his material ? until it took on an incredible life of its own," Bell said.

Price didn't see himself as a ceramist, but rather a sculptor, Bell said.

Before of his death, Price completed preparations for a 50-year retrospective scheduled to open at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this fall.

In a post on its website, the museum said its entire community was saddened to learn of his death. It described his work as remarkable and innovative and said his pieces helped redefine the practice of contemporary sculpture.

From the spherical 1963 piece dubbed "L. Red" to "Zizi," which he completed in 2011, the classic elements of color and fluidity are always present in Price's work.

The range of color is what evolved over his career along with the endless shapes he had stored in his mind, his son said.

Born in Los Angeles in 1935, Price was known for his bright colors. Early on he used traditional means, such as glazing. He moved on to acrylic paint, which was enough to cause a stir among ceramic purists.

By the early 1960s, Price emerged as a seminal figure of the West Coast ceramic sculpture movement. His first solo exhibit was in 1960 at the famed Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, which nurtured Bell, Andy Warhol and other significant modern artists.

While Price's work has not been widely exhibited until relatively recently, the upcoming "Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective" will look at how his worked progressed over a career that spanned more than five decades. It will also explore the work of other artists who were inspired by him.

Stephanie Barron, senior curator of modern art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, told The Los Angeles Times: "Price's practice has remained resolutely original, challenging categorization and redefining contemporary sculpture."

At The Harwood in Taos, Price's "Death Shrine I" is on exhibition. The Mexican folk-inspired funerary alter sits behind a white picket fence. It's one of only three in existence and the only one on display for public viewing.

Brenneman called it an important installation within the history of Price's work. She gave up her office so that a new space could be created at the museum for the shrine.

Price also created prints, drawings and even mescal labels for his friend Ron Cooper.

Brenneman said whatever the medium, Price's work was always meticulous, refined and witty.

Price liked to read newspapers during breakfast and listen to jazz and baseball games while working in his studio. His only break during the day would be for lunch.

"He touched a lot of people," Jackson Price said. "It's a big loss but he left behind a lot of beautiful stuff for all of us to remember him by."

Price is survived by his wife, Happy Ward, their son Jackson and step-children Romy and Sydney.

Expanding Mexican strawberry industry hurts Florida strawberry growers

DOVER, Florida ? The law of supply and demand had worked pretty well for the Florida strawberry industry during the past decade.

This season, not so much.

A supply spike of fresh strawberries hit the U.S. market this winter, driving down the retail price for consumers but also farm prices. Florida strawberry growers will struggle to turn a profit this year.

"The prices have been way too cheap. This has been a good year for consumers, both in quality and price," said Mike Lott, a Seffner strawberry grower with 42 acres. "We've been picking cheap all year."

Lott and other strawberry growers still don't know if they'll end the season next month with a profit.

"It's going to be tough. It's going to be down to the wire," he said.

Andy McDonald, owner of Sweet Life Farms, which has 92 strawberry acres in Plant City, agreed.

An unseasonably warm winter in Florida had strawberry plants producing at record capacities, the growers said.

But the Mexican strawberry industry, expanding for the past several years, also enjoyed unusually good growing conditions, they said. Because Mexican growers use the same strawberry varieties as Florida, which produce from late November to March, cheaper Mexican strawberries came into the U.S. market in unprecedented numbers, driving down U.S. prices.

"We're facing unfair competition," said Gary Wishnatzki, CEO at Wish Farms Inc., a Plant City strawberry grower and the state's largest shipper of fresh strawberries. "The market would have absorbed our production if it were not for Mexico."

Wishnatzki and the other growers complained Mexican strawberry farms face much lower labor and production costs, making it difficult to compete on price.

Many regular customers stopped buying from Wish Farms, telling Wishnatzki they would go with the cheaper Mexican strawberries, he said.

"The [supermarket] chains started buying Mexican product because it was heavily discounted," Wishnatzki said.

From mid-November through Feb. 18, Mexico shipped 97.3 million pounds of strawberries to the U.S., a 26.2 percent increase from 77 million pounds in 2010-11, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics.

The bigger concern, however, is that this year's strawberry market may have become the new normal, they said.

"Over the years, it's been a competition between California and Florida," Lott said. "Now we've got Mexico in the mix."

Indeed large California growers, including Driscoll Strawberry Associates Inc., have financed the booming Mexican strawberry industry by planting new acreage there, Wishnatzki and McDonald said.

The Florida strawberry industry built itself on two pillars -- rising consumer demand for strawberries because of perceived health benefits and a climate that gives Florida an exclusive market window as the nation's provider of fresh strawberries from that first harvest in late November to March.

U.S. consumption of fresh strawberries doubled from 2 pounds per capita in 1980 to about 4 pounds in the early 1990s, USDA statistics show. Then it surged again to 7.2 pounds in 2010, the latest data available.

G-20 linking IMF hike to bigger EU 'firewall' fund

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The G-20 nations are conditioning additional money for the International Monetary Fund on the European Union first increasing its financial stabilization funds to ease concerns about the euro zone debt crisis, officials said Sunday.

Officials participating in a meeting of G-20 nations' finance ministers and central bank heads said an EU decision to add to the estimated euro500 billion ($675 billion) in firewall funds already committed to the effort would be essential before the rest of world considers contributing to the stabilization measures.

"Euro-area countries will reassess the strength of their support facilities in March. This will provide an essential input in our ongoing consideration to mobilize resources to the IMF," the meeting's closing joint statement said.

Christine Lagarde, head of the IMF, said the expectation that the EU's firewall fund will be increased was widespread among G-20 officials.

"They all expect that the euro area will strengthen, consolidate, reinforce its firewall to make sure that it is both adequate and credible before they look at increasing the firepower of the fund (IMF)."

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner joined in the calls for the EU to do more.

"There is broad agreement that the IMF cannot substitute for the absence of a stronger European firewall and that the IMF cannot move forward without more clarity on Europe's own plans," he said, while noting the U.S. would not be making any increased contribution.

The weekend talks mainly focused on stability for the euro zone, where debt and economic problems, like the specter of a default by Greece, have threatened to destabilize global financial markets.

Though no specific amount in firewall funds was discussed, Geithner said the funds "have to be large ... my sense is that they (Europeans) understand that." Other officials said the added funds must be enough to calm market concerns and should be available to countries before they fully carry out promised fiscal reforms.

A senior G-20 official who spoke on condition she not be quoted by name said the consensus that the EU must act is broad, and include big potential lender countries like China and Japan. They feel the IMF can play a back-up role, but the EU's own fund must be the first line of defense, the official said.

It appears Germany's reluctance to further fund EU stabilization funds may be the sticking point, largely because the issue is a sensitive one in German domestic politics. Germany is the EU's strongest economy and would probably be the biggest contributor, and the German parliament must still approve the current round of support efforts for debt-plagued Greece.

Geithner noted that "the G-20 is committed to making sure that the IMF has the resources it needs to help its members deal with the risks from Europe."

German officials did not speak to the media following the conference but appear reluctant to increase stabilization funds.

In a column in the Mexican newspaper El Universal on the eve of the meeting, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble wrote that "should we increase even more the firewalls? The response is a resounding no." Schauble also rejected sharing other euro-zone country debts or expanding the euro money supply to meet countries' budget gaps.

"This would not only not solve the problems of debt and competitiveness that brought the affected countries to their current state of affairs, it would also discourage their governments from carrying out consolidation and reform," he wrote.

But Olli Rehn, the European Commission vice president for economic and monetary affairs, said he expected euro-leaders to sign on. "I trust (they will) decide to reinforce this combined lending facility in order to better contain market turbulence.

Rehn argued that it is "better to take a preventive approach."

"Prevention is always better than correction, and indeed as we have a large enough financial firewall, we are much more convincingly able to contain the market turbulence that may still return even if we have experienced a certain period of stabilization recently," Rehn said.

Discussing other economic matters, Geithner called the appreciation of China's currency, the renminbi, "welcome progress." China's currency has risen about 12 percent in real terms against the U.S. dollar over the last 18 months. But Geithner said the U.S. thinks it is in China's own interest "and in the interest of the global economy for their exchange rate to continue to appreciate."

He also said he had "a series of encouraging conversations with countries planning to significantly reduce imports from Iran," to reinforce sanctions aimed at discouraging Iran's nuclear program.

"We are seeing very effective cooperation from our partners on the financial front to help ensure that their banks cease transactions with the Central Bank of Iran and that Iranian banks find it harder than ever to facilitate Iran's illicit nuclear activities or to help Iran evade sanctions," he said at a new conference.

Turning to the U.S. economy, Geithner said, "this is an important year for financial reform in the United States, where we expect to have the major foundations of our reform in place by the end of 2012."

While noting that the U.S. has made progress in some sectors on economic recovery, "even with this progress, however, the damage inflicted by the crisis will still take some time to repair. Unemployment, while falling, is still very high. And the housing market remains weak."

Lagarde, the IMF head, said some of the G-20 countries voiced complaints over draft U.S. financial regulations that would prohibit banks from trading for their own profit.

Lagarde also noted "the global economy is not out of the danger zone," adding that the recent run-up in oil prices represented a risk to recovery.

"We are obviously concerned about it," she said. "It has downside effects and risks for developed economies ... it has major consequences for developing countries."

According to the National Association of Realtors? quarterly commercial real estate forecast, all of the major commercial real estate sectors are seeing improved fundamentals, but multifamily housing is becoming a landlord?s market commanding bigger rent increases. These trends also are confirmed in NAR?s recent quarterly Commercial Real Estate Market Survey.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said vacancy rates are improving in all of the major commercial real estate sectors. ?Sustained job creation is benefiting commercial real estate sectors by increasing demand for space,? he said. ?Vacancy rates are steadily falling. Leasing is on the rise and rents are showing signs of strengthening, especially in the apartment market where rents are rising the fastest.?

NAR forecasts commercial vacancy rates over the next year to decline 0.4 percentage point in the office sector, 0.8 point in industrial real estate, 0.9 point in the retail sector and 0.2 percentage point in the multifamily rental market.

?Household formation appears to be rising from pent-up demand,? Yun said. ?The tight apartment market should encourage more apartment construction. Otherwise, rent increases could further accelerate in the near-to-intermediate term.?

The Society of Industrial and Office Realtors? shows a notable gain in its SIOR Commercial Real Estate Index, an attitudinal survey of 297 local market experts.¹

The SIOR index, measuring the impact of 10 variables, jumped 8.3 percentage points to 63.8 in the fourth quarter, following a gain of 0.6 percentage point in the third quarter. The index remains well below the level of 100 that represents a balanced marketplace, which was last seen in the third quarter of 2007.

Most market indicators posted advances in the fourth quarter, but 71 percent of respondents said leasing activity is below historic levels in their market ? an improvement from 83 percent in the third quarter. Only 29 percent report there is ample sublease space available.

Office and industrial space remains a tenant?s market ? 87 percent of participants feel that tenants are getting a range of benefits ranging from moderate concessions to deep rent discounts.

Construction activity is still low, with 95 percent of experts reporting it is below normal, and 83 percent said it is a buyers? market for development acquisitions; prices are below construction costs in 78 percent of markets.

Participants are broadly expecting stronger conditions for the current quarter, with two out of three expecting market improvement.

NAR?s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook² offers projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas were provided by REIS, Inc.,³ a source of commercial real estate performance information.

Office Markets
Vacancy rates in the office sector are projected to fall from 16.4 percent in the current quarter to 16.0 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates presently are Washington, D.C., with a vacancy rate of 9.5 percent; New York City, at 10.0 percent; and New Orleans, 12.4 percent.

After rising 1.6 percent in 2011, office rents should increase another 1.9 percent this year and 2.4 percent in 2013. Net absorption of office space in the U.S., which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, is forecast at 20.1 million square feet in 2012 and 28.1 million next year.

Industrial Markets
Industrial vacancy rates are likely to decline from 11.7 percent in the first quarter of this year to 10.9 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 4.8 percent; Los Angeles, 4.9 percent; and Miami at 7.6 percent.

Annual industrial rent is expected to rise 1.8 percent in 2012 and 2.3 percent next year. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is seen at 40.6 million square feet this year and 57.7 million in 2013.

Retail Markets
Retail vacancy rates are forecast to decline from 11.9 percent in the current quarter to 11.0 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

Presently, markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, 3.6 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., at 5.1 percent; and Long Island, N.Y., at 5.4 percent.

Average retail rent should rise 0.7 percent this year and 1.2 percent in 2013. Net absorption of retail space is projected at 9.9 million square feet this year and 23.9 million in 2013.

Multifamily Markets
The apartment rental market ? multifamily housing ? is likely to see vacancy rates drop from 4.7 percent in the first quarter to 4.5 percent in the first quarter of 2013; multifamily vacancy rates below 5 percent generally are considered a landlord?s market with demand justifying higher rents.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are New York City, 1.8 percent; Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., each at 2.5 percent; and San Jose, Calif., at 2.7 percent.

After rising 2.2 percent last year, average apartment rent is expected to increase 3.8 percent in 2012 and another 4.0 percent next year. Multifamily net absorption is forecast at 209,900 units this year and 223,600 in 2013.

The Commercial Real Estate Outlook is published by the NAR Research Division for the commercial community. NAR?s Commercial Division, formed in 1990, provides targeted products and services to meet the needs of the commercial market and constituency within NAR.
