Obama, Romney: Rivals with little personal history

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2008, one of the people who reached out to the couple was newly elected President Barack Obama.

It was one of the few personal interactions between Obama and Romney.

"He was kind enough to call our home when my wife was ill, and he said that he and Michelle had my wife in their prayers," Romney said in an interview after the call. "I said, 'Mr. President-elect, Ann and I have you in our prayers'. And we do."

Even as their political fates have become more entwined, Obama and Romney have had little opportunity to connect directly. In fact, when the Democratic president and the former Republican governor of Massachusetts stand alongside each other during Wednesday night's presidential debate in Denver, it will be their first face-to-face meeting in nearly five years.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I think Gov. Romney obviously has achieved extraordinary success with his businesses, and he's obviously very focused on achieving the presidency. He cares deeply about his family, and I think he cares deeply about his faith."

Romney has had similarly kind words about the president as a father and family man. But most of their descriptions of each other during the campaign are far less complimentary, and that probably will be the case in the debate.

Romney accuses the president of having "more European than American" views. Obama says Romney has written off half the country.

The two do have a few similarities. They're both graduates of Harvard Law School; Romney also has a business degree from the Ivy League university. Each is a multimillionaire, though Romney's estimated $250 million fortune far exceeds Obama's net worth, which is as much as $8.3 million.

When people get one of their first looks at the rivals standing side by side Wednesday, they'll see a Republican who is 14 years older and an inch taller than the 51-year-old president, who stands 6-feet-1.

Obama and Romney first met in 2004 at a gathering of Washington's political and media elite. Romney, then governor, and Obama, a senator-elect from Illinois, were picked by the Gridiron Club to deliver speeches at the group's dinner. The private event's festive atmosphere, however, meant their dueling speeches were more about cracking jokes than outlining their policy differences.

By the time their paths crossed again, the rising political stars were presidential contenders. Seeking to line up votes in the New Hampshire primary, they both showed up for the 2007 Labor Day parade in the town of Milford. They shook hands, exchanged a few pleasantries and turned their attention to the voters.

New Hampshire was also the site of what aides to both men believe was their last face-to-face meeting before Wednesday's debate.

In January 2008, the Republican and Democratic primary candidates were holding back-to-back debates in Manchester. After the Republicans wrapped up, the moderator invited the Democrats waiting in the wings to join them briefly onstage for a brief show of bipartisanship.

Obama and Romney found each other in the scrum. They smiled and shook hands, with Obama placing his hand warmly on Romney's arm.

Obama went on to win the White House. Romney dropped out of the Republican race shortly thereafter.

They've had one direct exchange during the 2012 campaign. Obama called Romney in late May after the Republican clinched the GOP nomination. He congratulated Romney and told him he "looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America's future."

Aides to both men described the call as brief and cordial.

Their scant personal relationship is in many ways the result of potential pathways to the presidency that had little to do with Washington. Obama spent just two years in the Senate before launching his 2008 White House bid. Romney spent most of his career in the private sector and has never worked in the nation's capital.

It's a marked contrast to many of the other political pairs that have faced off against each other for the presidency. Obama and his 2008 GOP rival John McCain, for example, had worked together in the Senate before facing each other in the general election.

Similarly, President George W. Bush and his 2004 Democratic challenger, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, knew each other from work in Washington. Same with President Bill Clinton and then-Kansas Sen. Bob Dole, the Republican nominee in 1996.

Sara Taylor Fagen, who served as a political adviser to Bush, said Obama and Romney's lack of a personal relationship would likely be a mixed blessing on the debate stage.

"On the one hand, you've depersonalized it. You can say, 'I don't really know you, I'm totally comfortable saying whatever I have to," Fagen said. "On the other hand, familiarity is a really helpful thing. Even though you may be fierce opponents, it also gives you a comfort level."

Ways To Make Camping Fun For Everyone | Content for Reprint

Camping is a great activity and can be done with those around you that you love. Yet, many never try it because it sounds so hard to do. As long as you have the information you need ahead of time, camping is very easy. Continue reading this article for some excellent camping tips that will make you an seasoned camper quickly.

Remember that everything you bring will get dirty on your trip. Being prepared for the inevitable is the best way to avoid unneeded stress. Have fun in nature and don't be afraid to get dirty! You can get back to normal after returning home.

Make sure you know how to use a compass and map before you go camping. You can get lost in the woods even if you have been to the area before. You will be able to avoid possible tragedy when you learn how to use both of these life saving items.

After your trip, be certain you leave the campsite cleaner than it was when you found it. You will want to bring trash bags for cleaning up all refuse. Do not leave food there, either. A golden rule for departing a campsite: leave only your footprints behind.

Safety procedures should be acknowledged when you're out camping. Keep away from animals, both large and small. Even small animals in the wild can be dangerous. This should not have to be said, but never feed any bears you see.

Never assume that you will find enough wood to burn, because rain can change that in an instant. Bringing your own small supply of wood and keeping it dry is a wise decision.

Learn how to use a map or a compass before going camping. Even if you know what your campsite is like, you may still get lost because a lot of areas look similar around where you are. You can prevent disaster by knowing how to use these lifesaving items.

Never assume that you will find enough wood to burn, because rain can change that in an instant. It's important that you bring extra wood with you that you can keep in a dry area.

If you have any type of medical issue, no matter how minor, you should always discuss camping with a medical professional beforehand. He or she can tell you about important things you may not have thought about for your trip that can affect your health in a harmful way. Maybe only one small thing needs to be done that won't interfere but will make your camping trip less dangerous for you.

Have you just bought your first tent and want to begin camping? It's vital to learn all that you can before you leave about your tent. You should know what you need and how to do it before you actually have to do it. This will also help you be able to accomplish the task quickly and efficiently once you arrive at your campsite, even if it is near dark.

Find the softest, flattest ground possible to set up your tent. If you pick out a sloped or a rocky spot it can make sleeping and hanging out in the tent very uncomfortable. Also, put a tarp down on your site to repel water in the best fashion.

Buy yourself some camping pillows for your trip. The typical pillows will become sticky in hot and humid climates. The will also pull moisture from the air and mildew will form quickly. Pillows specifically designed for camping will not draw in wetness like regular pillows will.

For a cheap and disposable tarp to place under your tent, save an old shower curtain! You can also use it as a way to control run-off as you are washing or cooking. Instead of getting rid of an old shower curtain, use it for your next camping trip.

Improper food packing leads to food poisoning in many campers each year. Food poisoning can happen when food is spoiled, which is something you risk when you take food not properly preserved, vacuum sealed or canned. Make sure you keep all perishable food on ice, but keep the drain open!

Now that you've reached the end of this article, you are ready to do some planning. Camping is not intended to be an intense event, but there is a bit of know-how required to make it stress free. Use the information shared here and have a great trip!

Las Vegas VIPs and celebrities got into the Halloween spirit early as they attended the VIP and blood red carpet grand opening of director Eli Roth?s year-round scare fest Goretorium on Thursday night on the Strip. The evening kicked off with the ?Hostel? and ?Cabin Fever? director performing a chainsaw-cutting ceremony on the mezzanine level of Goretorium and then arrived on the actual black arrivals carpet with bloodied white carnations.

Black carpet guests included Dave Navarro (Guns ?n? Roses), Monte Carlo headliners the Jabbawockeez, Corey Miller (?L.A. Ink?), Zak Bagans (?Ghost Adventures?), Victoria Asher (Cobra Starship), DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia), Omar Doom (?Inglorious Basterds?), DJ Ashba (Guns ?n? Roses), Antonio Bellatore (?The Antonio Bellatore Project?), 2012 Miss Nevada USA Jade Kelsall, 2005 Miss USA Shanna Moakler, boxer Zab Judah and actress Elina Madison.

After the arrivals carpet, Roth (b)led guests to the 1960s-inspired Baby Dolls lounge overlooking the Strip to watch a special moment featuring world-renowned illusionist Franz Harary. Roth entered a vintage ?exercise machine? and twisted his upper body 360 degrees while his legs stayed in one place. Guests gasped when he began coughing up blood while ?guts? were thrown into the crowd. The contraption sucked a guest inside the contraption while Roth exited back to normal. All in fun, people!

Eli Roth's Goretorium grand opening - from YouTube.com

As Goretorium characters partied in Baby Dolls, guests were treated to a specialty cocktail, Eli Roth?s Blood, as they listened to a mash-up of Top 40 songs. The 15,000-square-foot, $10 million Goretorium, located across from the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, with spine-tingling special effects, state-of-the-art scenery and a cast of nightmare-inducing characters opened to the public at 11 p.m.

Fox News blames live airing of suicide on "severe human error"

(Reuters) - Fox News apologized on Saturday for a "severe human error" that resulted in viewers seeing a suspected carjacker fatally shoot himself after a police chase.

The coverage of the Friday incident, which sparked outrage on social media and a quick on-air apology by anchor Shepard Smith, showed a man stumbling from an allegedly stolen car into the desert near Phoenix on Friday.

As a camera in a helicopter provided live coverage, the man stopped a short distance away, pulled the trigger of a gun pointed to the right side of his head and crumpled face-forward into the ground.

"We took every precaution to avoid any such live incident by putting the helicopter pictures on a five-second delay," said Michael Clemente, Fox's executive vice president for news editorial.

"Unfortunately, this mistake was the result of a severe human error and we apologize for what viewers ultimately saw on the screen," he said in a statement.

A Phoenix police spokesman confirmed the man, who authorities said fired at officers and a police helicopter at one point during the pursuit, died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

NFL refs approve deal, ready for Sunday games

The deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members. (AP Photo/Nomaan Merchant)

(AP) ? NFL referees are ready to go unnoticed again, just as they prefer.

The refs approved a new eight-year contract with the league by a 112-5 vote Saturday, officially ending a lockout that led to three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew the attention of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

After a few hours of final preparations with league officials, the next stop for the referees will be the airport. Most will be heading straight to their Sunday game sites.

"It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,'" said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. "We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games."

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place. Before long, they expect to go back to being mostly anonymous and sometimes hated. They're OK with both.

"The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,'" Green said. "That's how we like to work."

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

"We are obviously pleased to hear it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night. Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

"I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned," Green said. "If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well."

Looper

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper.

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper.

Photo by Alan Markfield/DMG Entertainment/Looper, LLC.

After you've seen Looper, come back and listen to our Spoiler Special podcast with Dana Stevens and Dan Kois. You can also download the podcast.

Looper is the third film from Rian Johnson, whose debut feature Brick (2005) somehow pulled off the brazen gimmick of setting a noir murder mystery in a suburban American high school. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (then known to most audiences as the alien kid on the family sitcom Third Rock from the Sun) played the lead role?a teenage Sam Spade investigating his girlfriend?s murder?with an alchemically perfect combination of hip detachment and wary melancholy. Gordon-Levitt was already a rising actor, having been singled out by critics in less-mainstream roles, like the gay drifter he played in Gregg Araki?s moody, unforgettable Mysterious Skin. But it was only after Brick that he began his steady rise toward household-name status, playing a lovelorn greeting-card designer in (500) Days of Summer, a brain-cancer patient in 50/50, and a credible action sidekick in both Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

I?m an avowed JGL fan, so the prospect of Gordon-Levitt and Johnson working together again was enticing.?So?was Looper?s high-concept sci-fi premise: Gordon-Levitt plays a hired assassin whose targets are sent back in time from the future. It?s 2044, and time travel hasn?t yet been invented, but?to employ the future-perfect tense useful mainly for time-travel movies?it will have been invented in 30 years. By that point, a fearful, vaguely post-apocalyptic government will have forbidden any use of the technology ... so, to paraphrase the NRA bumper sticker, when time machines are outlawed, only outlaws will have time machines. Soon the contraptions (which look, pleasingly, like Jules Verne-era bathyspheres) are used solely on the black market, transporting the human garbage of the future back in time for the past to clean up. At least, that's how Joe (Gordon-Levitt) justifies to himself the fact that he makes his living waiting in deserted fields for hooded, cuffed men to appear out of nowhere so he can shoot them with a blunderbuss.

Underground assassins like Joe?members of an organized force led by menacing boss-from-the-future Abe (Jeff Daniels)?are known as ?loopers,? for the chilling reason that, after being paid handsomely and given an early retirement that lasts exactly 30 years, they themselves will be captured, sent back in time and killed, thus closing the ?loop? of their lives. As the film begins, a new crime lord, a fearsome gangster known as the Rainmaker, has taken over in the future and is issuing new orders about the existing loopers: He wants all their future selves sent back in time and killed immediately, preferably by the younger versions of themselves. (Why exactly this setup would be desirable was one plot point among many that eluded me. Given that the victims from the future are being sent back with their heads covered, why would it matter which looper killed whom?)

Joe?s featherbrained fellow looper Seth (Paul Dano), encountering his own later-self, isn?t able to bring himself to pull the trigger, and the man gets away, resulting in a very bad outcome for both present and future Seths (and the first of several extended bursts of stomach-churning violence). Joe resolves that, when and if his own future self appears in cuffs before him, he won?t hesitate to blow him away?but when that day comes and Joe?s future self turns out to be Bruce Willis, all bets are off.

Future Joe manages to knock Past Joe out cold, take his gun, and head out into the world to find and kill the child destined one day to grow into the Rainmaker. Based on a tip about the super-criminal?s date and place of birth, old Joe has narrowed the candidates down to three small children, one of whom (Pierce Gagnon) is the son of a lonely sugarcane farmer (Emily Blunt) in whose barn young Joe has taken shelter while on the run from Abe?s men, who are now hunting down both Joes with extreme prejudice.

You see where this is going: At some point, Young Joe and Old Joe are going to have to meet up and debrief about the 30 years that separate them, then decide whether they?re going to continue as allies or enemies. The moment this finally happens, in an Edward Hopper-esque diner in the middle of nowhere, was for me the movie?s high point. As they stare at each other in profile over two identical plates of steak and eggs, Willis and Gordon-Levitt, such different types both physically and temperamentally, make a strange sense as each others? time-traveling avatars, especially since we?re meant to imagine that Joe?s years of hard living to come will make him a coarser, tougher man in middle age. (Levitt was also fitted with facial prosthetics to make his fine-boned face more closely resemble Willis? craggier features. The nose works; the eyebrows are pushing it.) The diner scene also snaps with smart dialogue that playfully bats around sci-fi clich?s; asked by his 2044 self to explicate one of the paradoxes of time travel, 2074 Joe impatiently dismisses the question, insisting they have no time to ?start making diagrams with straws.?

Too bad, because a well-thought-out straw diagram might have been able to get me through the movie?s last half-hour, in which timeless philosophical questions of free will vs. destiny, nature vs. nurture, and utilitarian ethics (would you consider killing a child if you knew it meant saving countless future lives from the monster he might grow up to be?) get raised, then chucked aside as the story hurtles to a rushed, gory conclusion that leaves nearly as many plot holes as bullet holes. Saddest of all, after their juicy mid-movie encounter at the diner, Old and Young Joe hardly ever share the screen again, and when they do, it?s mostly to exchange terse remarks and gunfire.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss: It posits an impossible but fascinating-to-imagine relationship?a face-to-face encounter between one?s present and future self, in which each self must account for its betrayal of the other?and then throws away nearly all the dramatic potential that relationship offers. If someone remakes Looper as the movie it could have been in, say, 30 years, will someone from the future please FedEx it back to me?

SC opinion on Presidential Reference on 2G verdict | APN News

Auctions are not the only permissible method for disposal of natural resources across sectors, the Supreme Court said holding that the 2G verdict was confined to allocation of spectrum and is not applicable to other resources.

Giving its opinion on the Presidential reference arising out of 2G verdict, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia also ruled that common good is the touchstone for any policy and if it meets that then any means adopted is in accordance with the constitutional principles.

Auction despite being a more ?preferable method? of allotment of natural resources cannot be held to be a constitutional mandate, observed the bench also comprising justices D K Jain, J S Khehar, Dipak Misra and Ranjan Gogoi.

?In our opinion, auction despite being a more preferable method of alienation/allotment of natural resources, cannot be held to be a constitutional requirement or limitation for alienation of all natural resources and therefore, every method other than auction cannot be struck down as ultra-vires the constitutional mandate,? the bench said.

The bench said that auctions may be the best way of maximizing revenue but revenue maximisation may not always be the ultimate motive of the policy and natural resources can be allocated to private companies by other methods for the purpose to subserve public good.

?Common good is the sole guiding factor under Article 39(b) for distribution of natural resources. It is the touchstone of testing whether any policy subserves the common good and if it does, irrespective of the means adopted, it is clearly in accordance with the principle enshrined in the Article,? the bench said.

The apex court referred to various judgements delivered by it earlier while upholding government?s decision to allocate natural resources through means other than auction.

?It is manifest that there is no constitutional mandate in favour of auction under Article 14. The Government has repeatedly deviated from the course of auction and this Court has repeatedly upheld such actions,? the bench said.

It said ?whenever the object of policy is anything but revenue maximization, the Executive is seen to adopt methods other than auction?.

Justice Khehar, who wrote a separate but concurring judgement, said that natural resource should not be dissipated as a matter of charity, donation or endowment, for private exploitation.

?No part of the natural resource can be dissipated as a matter of largess, charity, donation or endowment, for private exploitation.

Each bit of natural resource expended must bring back a reciprocal consideration.

The consideration may be in the nature of earning revenue or may be to best subserve the common good. It may well be the amalgam of the two.

?There cannot be a dissipation of material resources free of cost or at a consideration lower than their actual worth. One set of citizens cannot prosper at the cost of another set of citizens, for that would not be fair or reasonable,? Justice Khehar said.

The court disagreed with the contention that auction should be the only means of allocation as other methods can be abused by the private companies in connivance with government authorities as happened in 2G case.

?It may be said that even auction has a potential of abuse, like any other method of allocation, but that cannot be the basis of declaring it as an unconstitutional methodology either. These drawbacks include cauterisation, winners curse etc?.

?However, all the same, auction cannot be called ultra vires for the said reasons and continues to be an attractive and preferred means of disposal of natural resources especially when revenue maximisation is a priority?.

?Therefore, neither auction, nor any other method of disposal can be held ultra vires the Constitution, merely because of a potential abuse,? the bench said.

The court said that revenue maximisation cannot always be the primary consideration while allocating resources to private companies and assume secondary consideration when the development is the main consideration.

?Revenue maximization is not the only way in which the common good can be subserved. Where revenue maximization is the object of a policy, being considered qua that resource at that point of time to be the best way to subserve the common good, auction would be one of the preferable methods, though not the only method?.

?Where revenue maximization is not the object of a policy of distribution, the question of auction would not arise. Revenue considerations may assume secondary consideration to developmental considerations,? the bench said.

It said that the suggestion that disposal of a natural resource for commercial use must be for revenue maximization is based ?neither on law nor on logic?.

?Economic logic establishes that alienation/allocation of natural resources to the highest bidder may not necessarily be the only way to subserve the common good, and at times, may run counter to public good?.

?Hence, it needs little emphasis that disposal of all natural resources through auctions is clearly not a constitutional mandate,? the 208-page opinion given by the apex court said.

She'll knock you out with the cute. Boom. Flat on your butt.

Okay, so I?m a tad bit late in getting a project finished. Shocking, I know ? with the amount of crafting, cooking/baking and DIY?ing that I do. Pinterest, for example, is a fantastical place to be inspired and get ideas for all of the aforementioned.

Except at the rate that I (and all others it would seem) am ?pinning;? the reality of making all of those Pins happen? Doing all those projects? Not happening. I would much rather waste my time in the dark recesses of video editing; cutting and snipping and gathering and knitting together a fabric of show-stopping magnificence.

Not, necessarily, to be attributed with my mad video editing skillz; (not in the least). Yet rather the little?people?that I have born. The ones who my make my everyday a huge event. It?s in their company that I want to savour every moment in the present and capture enough memories to savour when I?m old and grey. To share with them and their children in the years to come. To share with their friends, g-rents, extended family all other adoring fans who aren?t there to savour the every-day.

It?s important to build up all of the gooey, golden moments; and treasure them like the huge shining beams of awesome that they are. It?s what helps us (me anyways), get through the less than savoury moments. Of which there are a plenty. I?ve posted the video on my personal blog today - this project that I had meant to publish in honour of Abby?s 1st birthday. So while I may be a couple of months late, who?s really counting. Surely, not she.

Editorial: Apple apologies actually aren't that infrequent, and that's okay

Editorial Apple apologies actually aren't that infrequent, and that's okay

Today, Tim Cook made his first major apology as the CEO of Apple. It probably won't be his last. Despite the obvious knee-jerk reaction regarding the Maps debacle, it's actually interesting that this particular scenario is yet another example of humans having extraordinarily short-term memories. It's the same reason that whatever game we most recently saw is the "best or worst ever." (Packers v. Seahawks 09.24.2012, I'm looking at you.) In truth, Apple has a fairly solid history of ingesting pride in the iPhone era, when it surged headfirst into the realm of serving consumers in a way that it never had before. And moreover, hearing Cook apologize isn't something that should be mocked or berated; one can only hope that more companies of all shapes and sizes develop a policy of listening and reacting. Allow me to explain.

Deadly connection: New report on extreme weather and climate - Grist

Climate change is having a steroidal effect on extreme weather. A summer featuring the hottest July on record in the continental United States punctuated a series of costly and deadly weather events.

This week, we released a new report, ?Going to Extremes: Climate Change and the Increasing Risk of Weather Disasters? [PDF]. The report looks at the impacts of 2012?s record-breaking heat on agriculture, wildfires, storms, and water levels. The report found the links between extreme weather and climate to be abundant, robust, and well-documented in peer-reviewed scientific studies.

Here are a few highlights from our report:

  • Wildfires: This year, wildfires burned more than 8.6 million acres, an area the size of New Jersey and Connecticut combined.
  • Drought: This summer, more than half of the counties in the United States have been designated disaster zones. The 2012 drought is on par with the worst months from the multi-year droughts of the Dust Bowl era.
  • Record temperature: August 2012 was the 330th consecutive month with global temperatures above the 20th century average. There has not been a single month cooler than the 20th century global average since February 1985.
  • Sea ice melt: Arctic sea ice coverage shrank to a record low 1.32 million square miles, 18 percent below the previous record set in 2007.

For decades, we have been fighting for a cleaner, safer environment ? a future where our children and grandchildren never have to worry about the air they breathe or the water they drink.

In this Congress, we have witnessed an all-out assault on the environment and the proliferation of polluter giveaways. While Mitt Romney jokes about the dangers of global warming, his Republican allies in the House have voted more than 300 times to undermine environmental protections during the last 18 months.

Carbon pollution is mixing a deadly cocktail of heat and extreme weather that is costing lives and billions of dollars in damages. Natural disasters in 2011 resulted in the most costly toll in history ? $154 billion worth of worldwide losses from floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, and other extreme weather events. But the Republican response to this threat has been to deny the science and block action.

While a strategy of denial and delay may benefit polluters, it?s not what the American people want their Congress to be doing. A recent poll from the Civil Society Institute [PDF] indicated that 81 percent of Americans are concerned about ?increased drought? and extreme weather events. Clearly, now is the time for climate action. It?s what the planet needs and it?s what the public wants. We must create a sea change in Congress before we fall victim to sea rise.

Obesity-related hormone discovered in fruit flies

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Researchers have discovered in fruit flies a key metabolic hormone thought to be the exclusive property of vertebrates. The hormone, leptin, is a nutrient sensor, regulating energy intake and output and ultimately controlling appetite. As such, it is of keen interest to researchers investigating obesity and diabetes on the molecular level. But until now, complex mammals such as mice have been the only models for investigating the mechanisms of this critical hormone. These new findings suggest that fruit flies can provide significant insights into the molecular underpinnings of fat sensing.

"Leptin is very complex," said Akhila Rajan, first author on the paper and a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Norbert Perrimon, James Stillman Professor of Developmental Biology at Harvard Medical School. "These types of hormones acquire more and more complex function as they evolve. Here in the fly we're seeing leptin in its most likely primitive form."

These findings will be published September 28 in Cell.

In order for an organism to function normally under varying conditions, its organ systems must learn to maintain a steady state, or "homeostasis." Coordinating food intake and nutrient stores with energy requirements is a key homeostatic mechanism referred to as energy homeostasis. Leptin regulates energy homeostasis by linking the organism's fat stores with caloric intake. It is the hormone that tells the brain, "You've had enough."

Researchers have known for the better part of a decade that molecules secreted by the fruit fly's fat tissue communicate such nutrition status reports throughout the fly's entire body. However, they have not known the identity of these molecules, or the nature of the signals they transmit. Rajan hypothesized that this signaling molecule most likely resembles the leptin hormone in humans, since flies and mammals share similar nutrient-sensing pathways.

Researchers had predicted that three molecules in flies were likely to be structurally similar to leptin. When Rajan knocked out one of them, a protein called Upd2, the flies behaved, on a metabolic level, as though they were starving -- despite consuming their normal caloric content.

"Since leptin is a nutrient sensor, this makes sense," said Rajan. "If you knock out the molecule that senses nutrients, the body thinks there are no nutrients. Blocking this molecule copied the phenotype of starvation."

Further tests showed that when flies were actually starving, levels of Upd2 went down, and when they received adequate nutrition, levels went up. This provided further evidence that, like leptin, Upd2 is a nutrient sensor.

Next, the researchers found that Upd2 uses a neural circuit similar to that of leptin to traffic nutrition information between the brain and fat tissue. When Upd2 reaches the brain, it regulates insulin secretion, in effect "telling" the fly to store nutrition and expend energy on growth.

Finally, Rajan and colleagues engineered a fly that lacked Upd2 altogether and inserted the human leptin gene in its place. The fly fully incorporated this mammalian molecule, and all normal nutrient-sensing functions resumed.

"The key significance here is that we can now take full advantage of the sophisticated genetic tool kit available in fly genetics to address profoundly complex questions pertaining to leptin biology," said Perrimon. "This is good news to scientists studying obesity at the molecular level."

Interestingly, the amino acid sequence of leptin diverges from that of Upd2. However, the proteins produced by each gene share many structural similarities. "There are very few examples of this in the literature," Perrimon said.

"Now that we've identified Upd2 as a fly's nutrient sensor and have begun to work out the brain circuitry, the next step is to go deep into the mechanisms," added Rajan.

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, grants 5P01CA120964 and 5R01DK088718.

WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings: Advocating for Health, Fitness and ...

Laura KolodjeskiLaura Kolodjeski

It?s safe to say there?s no shortage of inspirational women in the Women?s National Basketball Association (WNBA)! Earlier this year I featured WNBA President, Laurel J. Richie and Chicago Sky Head Coach, Pokey Chatman. Today, I?m excited to introduce you to the WNBA?s 2011 Most Valuable Player, Tamika Catchings, who plays for the Indiana Fever. Additionally, she?s a Dribble to Stop Diabetes Campaign Ambassador and co-founder of the Catch the Stars Foundation.

Q: How did you get started playing basketball?

A: My father was an NBA player for eleven years, playing for various teams including the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers. I really got started playing by watching my dad. I have an older brother and an older sister, so between the three of us we were very active and always playing sports.

Another reason I got involved in sports was because I was born with hearing problems, so I had to wear hearing aids and had a speech problem. Back then, I didn?t have the little hearing aids, I had the big ones and as a young girl that?s really not the thing that makes you popular. I remember just wanting to fit in and be normal and be like everybody else. I always got made fun of because of the way that I talked.

Sports really became an avenue for me just to be able to fit in and to be like everybody else. I knew that if I got made fun of off the court I could say, ?Hey, let?s go play basketball? or ?Let?s go play soccer.? I knew that some things in life I wouldn?t be able to change, but with sports I could always work harder and get better.

In seventh grade, I found my passion for basketball. I would go outside and play and play and play and it was just something that I loved. I enjoyed volleyball and still played until I went to college. I ran track and field into my junior year but during seventh grade, I decided that I was going to follow in my dad?s footsteps and play in the NBA. That was my dream.
2011 WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings

Q: You?ve carried that dream through to playing in the WNBA. What are some of the lessons you have learned playing at that level?

A: The WNBA is very professional and, as a professional athlete, it?s your responsibility to take care of yourself and your body. In college you really don?t have a choice because the team does everything together, including eating. In the WNBA, you have a schedule of practice times and games. In between practices and games, it?s up to you to make sure you?re getting in the weight room. You need to make sure that if you need to get extra cardio, that you?re doing it. And you have to make sure you?re eating right. Unlike college, there aren?t people watching you and making sure you?re getting everything done.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your Catch the Stars Foundation?

A: We work with boys and girls ages 7 to 15 and we offer sports-related and education-related programs. In the beginning, my sister and I started by offering basketball camps. Eventually, we were hosting so many different types of programs, we decided to start the Catch the Stars Foundation and put all of our different programs under that organization. Since then, we have added mentoring programs and we?re continuing to grow.

I love being able to impact the kids, especially early on, when you can involve them and guide them and lead them, you can tell that it makes a difference in their future.

Q: You?re now a spokesperson for Dribble to Stop Diabetes. Why did you decide to become so involved in the program?

A: Diabetes runs in my family. My nephew has type 2 diabetes and one of my aunts has type 1 diabetes. I realize that diabetes affects all of us. For me it?s really important to know what?s in my family, to make sure that I stay active and eat as healthy as I can.

Plus, Dribble to Stop Diabetes correlates directly with what I?m already doing with my job so it is a perfect fit. This is about setting an example. Any time you have kids looking up to you, it?s important to share the right message. When parents ask questions about diabetes and I can encourage them to look at the website, take a risk assessment, and talk to a doctor, then I think we?re promoting the right behavior.

Q: You mentioned how important kids are to you, any words of wisdom that you share with kids you meet?

A: It?s all about dreams and setting goals. In all of the programs that I?m involved in, we have them sit down and write goals. We talk about short-term goals and long-term goals.

A lot of people think that setting goals has to be a big thing. It can be, or it can be a simple daily task. It can be as big or little as you want. I was in seventh grade when I made my goal. The WNBA wasn?t even here and I knew what I wanted. I had a dream of what I wanted to do. To think about what I wanted to do in?seventh grade and to actually be doing it, it?s amazing.

It really is amazing! Tamika is such an inspiration and I think we can all take note from her experience and strive to accomplish our goals. All it takes is a dream and hard work. Thanks Tamika!

All the best,

Laura K.
