95% Argo

You really have a place in Hollywood when you've proven that your capable of acting and directing in the same film, and Ben Affleck has done so on many occassions. Argo is this actor using the full extent of his talent, and I hope he continues to make films as intelligent, thought-provoking and well-written as this throwback political thriller. I never imagined him making a film like this giving his past cinematic disasters which includes films like Pearl Harbour and Armageddon. And if you had similar doubts in him until you saw what he did with The Town, believe me afer seeing Argo, you will instantly remember that this was the guy who wrote Good Will Hunting. The film is based on the incredible historical event that is the "Canadian Caper", and what a great set up for a thriller, it's an unspeakably intense period thriller that not only unfolds in it's narrative era but also expires a wonderfully nostalgic sensibility, in that it feels like a film that would have been released during the time the storyline is set. In doing so Affleck demonstrates he understands the conventions on how to make a 60's style, narratively driven crime thriller in the same way as the fantastic and recent adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Next to great style and intense thrills the film also has an array of understated performances. It features an ensemble cast, and not a single actor performs flimsily. From the sleazy comic relief Alan Arkin, to John Goodman's passionate and respectful performance of hero, John Chambers. It isn't as close as it should be to the facts of what really went on, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ben Affleck made one extraordinary story a wonderful cinematic marvel. It's inspirational, beautifully shot, and deadly serious and blackly funny at the same time. One fundemental flaw with the film is in it's confusing overload of characters but crucially, even though it's not as groundbreaking or as profound as the period thrillers it takes it's inspiration from it's further proof that Ben Affleck is one of the best actor turned director's in Hollywood as of now. There's a possibility it will recieve Oscar nominations but I wouldn't count on it completely. It's not perfect, but it's one of the most entertaining mainstream thrillers of the year and boasts the most nail biting final 30 minutes in recent memory.

Jewish Musician with ALS Seeks U.S. Presidency

Abramson for President: New Hope for America through Music

EAST LANSING, Mich., Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lee Abramson, 42, has announced that he is an Independent candidate for the 2012 Presidential election.

Political expertise: His father, Paul Abramson, is a member of the American Political Science Association Hall of Fame, and is widely known as an expert in presidential politics.

Entrepreneurial experience: He is the first person to sell pork rinds on the Internet, and he sold 1000 CD's out of the back of a truck in the two years he was a bass player in a rock band.

Leadership experience: In college, he ran an industrial kitchen, planning meals and stocking food supplies. Later, he became the leader of the Web applications support team at Lotus Development Corporation.

Other credentials: Abramson is arguably the greatest musician since King David, and his two best friends Eric and Elliott (who have the same Hebrew name), and all of his other friends and family say that he brings clarity to contentious issues with the wisdom of Solomon.

Abramson's first act as President will be to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. His second act will be the immediate removal of all troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. He will use those resources to seal the border with Mexico, but only to combat drug trafficking. Abramson will reform immigration policies on the advice of his head of DHS. Abramson supports the use of MDMA in a controlled setting for treating veterans with PTSD.

Defense policy: Nuclear submarines will be the first expenditure to be cut. All employees and military personnel involved in running military nuclear reactors will be shifted into new domestic nuclear power plants. Strategic bombers and fighter planes will comprise the next program to be scaled back. All spending cuts from those programs, specifically research on military aerospace engineering, will be redirected towards establishing more advanced domestic light rail systems and space tourism. The third program to be cut will be tanks and armored personnel carriers because conflicts we are involved in specifically in Afghanistan require foot patrols to engage with civilians, making tanks and armored personnel carriers irrelevant to the conflict there.

Tax policy: Abramson feels that we need to implement a more progressive tax policy. People with higher incomes will pay a higher percentage of their income tax than the middle class.

Healthcare policy: Abramson favors the creation of a new healthcare program called "Americare". Americare will be a cradle-to-grave medical coverage program that will pay for the needs of all United States citizens and allow healthcare providers to be compensated according to their skill set. Americare will replace Medicare, Medicaid and the need for private insurance or supplemental insurance. Abramson feels that private insurance companies are criminal organizations because they profit by delaying and denying care, which could in some instances cause unnecessary deaths and suffering to people who rely on private insurance. Abramson feels that all private insurance companies should be liquidated and all employees should be assigned to positions within the Americare apparatus. Furthermore, Abramson proposes a retroactive inception of the Americare policy that will bring about a "Jubilee year" where any low-income person with medical debt will have that debt forgiven. This policy will be paid for by implementing the tax and defense policies. Abramson will also increase federal spending on medical research, particularly ALS research.

Drug policy: Marijuana will be legalized and taxed, and will be sold only at authorized dispensaries, with a strictly enforced age limit of 18 years for use.

Roundup: Liverpool, Inter Milan triumph

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:19 p.m. ET Oct. 25, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Liverpool put its Europa League campaign back on track with a victory over big-spending Anzhi Makhachkala 1-0 on Thursday, and Inter Milan broke through Partizan Belgrade's resistance late to win by the same score.

Stewart Downing scored a rare goal at the start of the second half from outside the penalty area for Liverpool.

"It was brilliant goal," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "He's had a rough ride here really. It's been difficult time for him, but he got a great round of applause from the Kop and if you can get that from the Kop then it'll give you a massive lift going forward."

The five-time winners of the more illustrious European Cup had lost two of their three matches in the Europa League but are now top of Group A.

Liverpool has a two-point lead over Anzhi and Udinese, which lost 3-1 at last-place Young Boys.

In Milan, Inter took until the 88th minute to break the deadlock with Rodrigo Palacio's header winning the clash with Partizan Belgrade.

The victory kept Inter level on seven points with Rubin Kazan at the top of Group H.

Rubin beat Neftchi 1-0 courtesy of Alan Kasaev's first-half goal.

Atletico Madrid maintained the perfect start to its defense of its Europa League title, with goals from Diego Costa and Emre Belozoglu securing a 2-1 victory over Portuguese club Academica.

The Spanish club holds a three-point lead in Group B over Viktoria Plzen, which won 2-1 at Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Lyon emulated Atletico by making it three wins out of three in Group I, securing a 2-1 victory over last year's beaten finalists Athletic Bilbao courtesy of Jimmy Briand's late goal. Sparta Prague is three points behind after beating Ironi Kiryat Shmona 3-1.

Unbeaten Newcastle is leading the way in Group D as the Ameobi brothers set up Gabriel Obertan's goal in a 1-0 victory over Club Brugge.

Sammy Ameobi latched onto brother Shola's neat flick and played the ball into space before laying it into the path of Obertan to secure the win.

Newcastle is three points ahead of Bordeaux, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Maritimo.

But Newcastle's Premier League rival Tottenham endured a frustrating night, slumping to a third draw in Group J. Spurs' Gylfi Sigurdsson retrieved a 1-1 draw at Maribor, canceling out Robert Beric's goal.

Lazio remains top of Group J despite also being held to a 1-1 draw against Panathinaikos as Toche struck for the Greek side in the 90th minute to cancel out Giorgos Seitaridis' first-half own goal.

Three people were hurt and four detained after several hundred fans were involved in clashes before the match in Athens.

Marseille surrendered top spot in Group C after losing 2-0 at Borussia Monchengladbach. Fenerbahce now leads the way - with a three-point advantage over Marseille and Monchengladbach - after Egeman Korkmaz's goal secured a 1-0 win at AEL Limassol.

NYTVF Primetime 2012: BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum ...

The 2012 New York Television Festival has been a treat for the tube nerd in all of us here at LocalBozo.com. Where else can you spend hours hearing the creators and writers of some of your favorite programs? Yet it is of the utmost importance to harness an understanding of how television works globally, especially directly across the pond.? Over the past decade, British comedy series like ?The Office,? ?Spaced,? and ?Peep Show,? have blown away American audiences ushering in an age of respect and emulation. In June, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and Rocliffe launched a nationwide search for the comedy writing stars of the future. A top team of British comedy greats came together to select the best scripts submitted and out of hundreds of submissions, three of the top manuscripts were chosen. If that wasn?t enough of an honor, the winners were asked to present segments of these works before a sold out NYTVF audience. The LocalBozo was front row center to watch these up and coming writers show off their crafts!

And if it wasn?t earth shattering enough to have your work performed at one of New York?s biggest festivals, these talented and lucky screenwriters also got a huge name in the business to both act as host and defacto critic of the work. Enter Jenni Konner, show runner for the highly popular HBO series ?Girls.? The hit show is entering its second season making Ms. Konner the perfect person to critique these budding writers? works. Konner started out her career working on Judd Apatgow?s beloved but canceled show ?Undeclared.? Since then, Jenni like many other highly talented television professionals has been under the Apatow wing, following the celebrated producer, writer, and director to many of his current projects.? And after each script segment was performed by a live cast, each writer or team would sit down with Konner and Farah Abushwesha of the Rocliffe Forums to have a lively discussion.

Each of the three pieces had plenty to enjoy and applaud but it was truly the first two that spoke to yours truly. First up, ?Grey? written by Kayleigh Llewellyn and Matthew Barry asked what happens when a gang of aging friends decide to start living for themselves? Can they really begin again in the winter of their lives? I know this sounds like a heavy premise, but the reality of it was the complete opposite. The live performance was staged by casted females in their senior years. Each of them had distinct and strong personality types that easily conveyed the humor and exposition to the viewer. Be it the no bullshit woman in the mechanical wheelchair telling it like it is, or the ones hilariously trying to hold the group together after a car breakdown, you had a real winner here. A ton of credit must be given to this diverse cast of women for taking risks with a script dealing with aging. When it came time to speak with Konner, the writers were more than happy to take any type of criticism, both positive and negative. Konner mostly praised the piece, backing up the fact that the writing quickly explained who each of the women were without some drawn out explanation dragging down the piece. Her advice was direct and seriously motivating. She spoke candidly to the team as to how they saw this segment translate into the rest of the series, and ultimately which approach she would take.

The other piece that stood out was titled ?Happy As Larry,? written by Nicolas Small. This comedic tale tells the story of ?Larry,? a suicidal self-help guru who begins to invert his own advice in an attempt to change his life. Listen, I don?t want to sound too biased here but as soon as the piece started I recognized the gentleman playing the lead of Larry as Stephen Barker Turner, one of the stars of ?Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2? the follow up to the original cult classic. I thought his manic work in the horror flick was excellent and the same goes for his comedic turn in this staged reading. Turner shined along with the rest of the cast in this quirky and sometimes uncomfortable piece about a man who in theory should have a it altogether, but truly does not.

While it goes without saying that these two pieces stuck with me the most, it is very important to mention that most of the cast was American.? Since these writers were showing their respective works before a New York City audience, the casting and some of the script was altered for us to digest. Unadulterated talent was on display Wednesday night, and this writer can only hope these talented voices are given the respect they deserve and ultimately have these works turned into a series.

Dumb Bank Robber Returns to Scene of Crime, Says He Didn't Get Enough Money

You'd think this would be bank-robbing 101: If you get away with it, don't return to the scene of the crime. And definitely don't go back to the bank if you're going to complain that the money you just stole wasn't quite enough.

That's what Arthur Bundrage did in Syracuse, New York, on Monday, the Huffington Post tells us.

Bundrage went into a bank at around 9 a.m. and demanded the tellers give him $20,000. He left to count his cash but realized he had been shortchanged. So he did what any angry customer would do and marched right back to demand his cash.

He was knocking on the bank's doors for a while when police caught and arrested him.

Bundrage is far from the first careless and just plain stupid bank robber.

In 2010, a Connecticut bank robber tried to save some time by calling ahead to make sure the tellers would have cash on hand when he arrived, according to NBCNews.com.

The scheming criminals weren't even shy about their intentions. They simply told the bank to have a bag of cash at the ready because they were coming to steal it.

Ten minutes later, when the 27-year-old and 16-year-old heisters arrived, the police were on their way to arrest the two.

One 2002 bank robbery in Iran might top them all.

A sorcerer told a robber he was invisible-and the burglar believed it, then went to try and rob a bank, Metro tells us.

He walked into the bank and started just grabbing money from customers. Of course, the customers were well aware that there was a very visible and identifiable person swiping their cash, so they fought back and held onto their money.

The poor criminal, however, lost out big-time: He paid the con-artist wizard about $625 for the fake invisibility services.

Car bomb in Damascus shatters feeble Syria cease-fire

Syrian Revolution General Commission via AFP - Getty Images

A handout picture released by the Syrian Revolution General Commission shows Syrians inspecting the site of a car bomb attack in the Daf Shawk district of Damascus on Oct. 26. At least five people were killed and 32 wounded in a car bomb attack in southern Damascus, Syrian state television said, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said children were among the wounded.

By Reuters

A powerful car bomb exploded in Damascus on Friday, inflicting many casualties and buffeting a shaky temporary truce in the Syrian conflict on the occasion of a Muslim religious holiday.

State television said the "terrorist car bomb" had killed five people and wounded 32, according to "preliminary figures."

Opposition activists said the bomb had gone off near a makeshift children's playground built for the Eid al-Adha holiday in the southern Daf al-Shok district of the capital.

Fighting erupted around Syria earlier as both sides violated the Eid al-Adha cease-fire arranged by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, but violence was far less intense than usual.

The Syrian military said it had responded to attacks by insurgents on army positions, in line with its announcement ?Thursday that would cease military activity during the four-day holiday but would react to rebel actions.

Brahimi's cease-fire appeal had won widespread international support, including from Russia, China and Iran, President Bashar al-Assad's main foreign allies.

Syrian military agrees to Eid cease-fire; residents report shelling

The U.N.-Arab League envoy had hoped to build on the truce to calm a 19-month-old conflict that has killed an estimated 32,000 people and worsened instability in the Middle East.

Despite a Syrian truce that was due to begin on Friday morning to mark a Muslim holiday, activists claim that fighting has broken out across the country. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

Violence appeared to wane in some areas, but truce breaches by both sides swiftly marred Syrians' hopes for a peaceful celebration of Eid al-Adha, the climax of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

"We are not celebrating Eid here," said a woman in a besieged Syrian town near the Turkish border, speaking above the noise of incessant gunfire and shelling. "No one is in the mood to celebrate. Everyone is just glad they are alive."

Her husband, a portly, bearded man in his 50s, said they and their five children had just returned to the town after nine days camped out on a farm with other families to escape clashes.

SANA via Reuters

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad attends prayers for Eid al-Adha, at al-Afram Mosque in al-Muhajirin area in Damascus on Oct. 26, 2012, in this handout photograph released by Syria's national news agency SANA.

"We have no gifts for our children. We can't even make phone calls to our families," he said, a young daughter on his lap.

'Painful disaster'
The Syrian conflict has aggravated divisions in the Islamic world, with Shiite Iran supporting Assad and U.S.-allied Sunni nations such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar backing his foes.

The imam of Mecca's Grand Mosque called on Arabs and Muslims to take "practical and urgent" steps to stop bloodshed in Syria.

Syrian opposition skeptical of 'feeble' ceasefire plan

"The world should bear responsibility for this prolonged and painful disaster (in Syria) and the responsibility is greater for the Arabs and Muslims who should call on each other to support the oppressed against the oppressor," Sheikh Saleh Mohammed al-Taleb told worshipers during Eid prayers.

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

For some in Syria, there was no respite from war, but by dusk the death toll was still significantly lower than in recent days, when often between 150 to 200 people have been killed, according to reports that cannot be independently verified.

Assad himself, who has vowed to defeat what he says are Islamist fighters backed by Syria's enemies abroad, was shown on state television attending Eid prayers at a Damascus mosque.

The prime minister, information minister and foreign minister, as well as the mufti, Syria's top Muslim official, were filmed praying alongside the 47-year-old president.

Assad, smiling and apparently relaxed, shook hands and exchanged Eid greetings with other worshipers afterward.

Military stalemate
Protests against Assad burst out in March last year, inspired by Arab uprisings elsewhere, but repression by security forces led to an armed insurgency, plunging Syria into a civil war that neither side has proved able to win or seems willing to end.

A commander from the rebel Free Syrian Army had said his fighters would honor the cease-fire but demanded Assad meet opposition demands for the release of thousands of detainees.

Some Islamist militants, including the Nusra Front, rejected the truce. Many groups were skeptical that it would hold.

"We do not care about this truce. We are cautious. If the tanks are still there and the checkpoints are still there then what is the truce?" asked Abu Moaz, spokesman for Ansar al-Islam, a group whose units fight in and around Damascus.

Why Do We Dwell in the Past? | World of Psychology

Why Do We Dwell in the Past? After something stressful has occurred it would be nice if we could leave it behind and move on with our lives.? Sometimes we can.? For example, you might narrowly miss getting sideswiped by another car, feel stressed in the moment, and then shake it off and move on with your day.

But often after we?ve encountered a stressful event, say, an argument with a spouse or an important presentation at work, we continue to ruminate (have repetitive, often negative, thoughts).? These thoughts are not about active problem-solving; they are repeatedly chewing on and worrying over past events.

Why is it that sometimes we can let go of the things that stress us out and at other times, even after the event has passed and we know can?t change it or our response, we continue to be stuck thinking about it?

It is important to understand what makes us more likely to dwell on the past, considering the numerous negative consequences.

Personality plays a role. Some people are more prone to rumination than others.? Nearly everyone dwells in the past at some point, but some people do it more often and are more likely to get stuck in their thoughts.

But are there types of stressful events that make us more likely to ruminate?? Recent research indicates that stressful events that have some sort of social component are more likely to stick with us (Emotion, August 2012).? So, for example, a public presentation is more likely to leave us dwelling in the past than a private stressful experience.

It makes sense, of course.??If we?ve had to perform in some way or another, we are then more likely to worry about others? negative judgment. Not only are we more likely to worry, we?re also more likely to feel shame.

It can become a vicious cycle.? We have a stressful experience in public, we worry that how we acted won?t be accepted by others, we feel ashamed of our actions (justified or not) and then we worry some more.? The more shame we feel, the more likely we are to worry.

Shame also appears to be linked to rumination and negative thoughts. Shame occurs when we fail to achieve our goals.? Unmet goals tend to leave us focused on the goal.? Feelings of shame ? for example, shame at not achieving what others have, shame at not being good enough ? can cause us to overthink things and become stuck in negative thoughts of past failures.

Rumination and persistent negative thinking are linked to social anxiety, symptoms of depression, elevated blood pressure and increased amounts of cortisol (a hormone associated with stress) in our blood. This type of worry can last three to five days after a stressful event has passed.?

Cesium levels in fish off Fukushima not dropping

(AP) ? Radioactive cesium levels in most kinds of fish caught off the coast of Fukushima haven't declined in the year following Japan's nuclear disaster, a signal that the seafloor or leakage from the damaged reactors must be continuing to contaminate the waters ? possibly threatening fisheries for decades, a researcher says.

Though the vast majority of fish tested off Japan's northeast coast remain below recently tightened limits of cesium-134 and cesium-137 in food consumption, Japanese government data shows that 40 percent of bottom-dwelling fish such as cod, flounder and halibut are above the limit, Ken Buesseler, a marine chemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, wrote in an article published Thursday in the journal Science.

In analyzing extensive data collected by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, he found that the levels of contamination in almost all kinds of fish are not declining a year after the March 11, 2011 disaster. An earthquake and tsunami knocked out the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant's vital cooling system, causing three reactor cores to melt and spew radiation onto the surrounding countryside and ocean.

"The (radioactivity) numbers aren't going down. Oceans usually cause the concentrations to decrease if the spigot is turned off," Buesseler told The Associated Press in an interview. "There has to be somewhere they're picking up the cesium."

"Option one is the seafloor is the source of the continued contamination. The other source could be the reactors themselves," he said.

The safety of fish and other foods from around Fukushima remains a concern among ordinary Japanese, among the world's highest per capita consumers of seafood.

Most fish and seafood from along the Fukushima coast are barred from the domestic market and export. In June, authorities lifted bans on octopus and sea snails caught off Fukushima after testing showed very low levels of radiation.

But the most contaminated fish found yet off Fukushima were caught in August, some 17 months after the disaster. The two greenlings, which are bottom-feeders, had cesium levels of more than 25,000 becquerels per kilogram, 250 times the level the government considers safe.

A government fisheries official, Chikara Takase, acknowledged that the figure for the greenlings was "extremely high," but he added high numbers were detected only in limited kinds of fish sampled in the restricted waters closest to the plant. He acknowledged that "we have yet to arrive at a situation that allows an overall lifting of the ban."

To bolster public confidence in food safety, the government in April tightened restrictions for cesium-134 and cesium-137 on seafood from 500 to 100 becquerels per kilogram. But the step led to confusion among consumers as people noticed more products were barred.

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said some radioactive water used to cool the Fukushima reactors leaked into the ocean several times, most recently in April.

"Given the 30-year half-life of cesium-137, this means that even if these sources (of contamination) were to be shut off completely, the sediments would remain contaminated for decades to come," Buesseler wrote in Science.

Experts suspect that radioactive water from the plant is seeping into the ground water at the same time, and is continuing to make its way into the ocean.

Hideo Yamazaki, a marine biologist at Kinki University, agrees with Buesseler's theory that the cesium is leaking from the Fukushima nuclear plant and that it will contaminate seafood for more than a decade.

He said he believes the plant will continue to leak until cracks and other damage to the three reactors that melted down are repaired. It's unclear when that work will be completed, or even how, because radiation levels in the reactors are too high for humans or even robots.

"The current levels of contamination in the fish and seafood from the Fukushima coast will continue for a while, perhaps more than 10 years, judging from the progress in the cleanup process," Yamazaki said in an email.

Buesseler, who led an international research cruise off northeastern Japan in 2011 to study the spread of radionuclides from the Fukushima plant, says predicting patterns of contamination requires more than monitoring data on fish. Careful study of the ocean waters and sediments is also needed to determine how quickly the system will recover.

NESCom students work with some of country music's biggest acts on ...

BANGOR, Maine ? Country music fans have reason to be envious of seven New England School of Communications seniors who recently were surrounded by some of the best the genre has to offer.

The group returned this week from an immersive weeklong cruise, where country music was a constant companion. While nearly 2,400 adoring country music fans took in more than 100 live performances, NESCom students worked behind the scenes to make sure the shows went on without a hitch.

The idea to bring the students onboard came from Tim Cabral, a 1990 NESCom graduate, who started Florida-based Cruise Production, a company that organizes cruises featuring music from artists ranging from Tim McGraw and Lynyrd Skynyrd to KISS and New Kids on the Block.

The roster on the Norwegian ?Pearl? as it visited the Caribbean Oct. 14-21 included headliner Blake Shelton, and country stars Trace Adkins, Lee Brice, Easton Corbin, Randy Houser, Jerrod Niemann and Neal McCoy along with 17 up-and-coming country acts.

?This was the best of the best, I swear half of Nashville was there,? said Eric Ferguson, interim director of Audio Engineering at NESCom who went with the students.

Cabral reached out to NESCom to offer an opportunity for seniors in the school?s Live Sound Technology program to work as stage crew on board the ship during its week at sea.

Cabral?s company covered plane tickets and other travel expenses and gave the students rooms on the ship in exchange for their work setting up shows, according to Ferguson.

?It was actually kind of thrown in my lap,? Ferguson said.

He said some of his students hadn?t flown before, and one had never left the state. One thing all students had in common is a passion for music and desire to work in the industry.

?Being on the ship really opened up the eyes of all of us,? said Chris Daniels, a 21-year-old NESCom student from Exeter, N.H., who worked on the cruise. He said students worked long days setting up equipment for performers around the ship. The group ran wires and set up amplifiers, microphones and other equipment for various musicians who played on stages across the ship, including poolside, Daniels said.

?We worked with an outstanding crew who really knew their stuff,? Daniels said.

While Daniels said he and his classmates aren?t huge fans of country music, they appreciate any genre and are just happy to have the opportunity to get involved in the music industry and meet artists and potential future employers.

?We all have a great skillset coming from the sound program [at NESCom],? Daniels said.

Ferguson said the trip was a success. Every student came away with offers for summer freelance work in the music industry, he said.

?They shined, the students did so well,? Ferguson said, adding that he fielded compliments from performers, crew members and other staff on the ship, who lauded the students for their hard work and strong understanding of audio technology.

?It was an outstanding experience that I wouldn?t trade for anything,? Daniels said.

Cabral has cruises booked through 2015 and has told the school he?s likely to invite more seniors to come help out in the future and learn more about what goes on behind the curtain in the music industry, Ferguson said.

NESCom will host an open house from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, for anyone who might be interested in attending the school for any of its programs, according to Ferguson.

Why a Major Private Equity Firm is Investing in Sustainability

sri Socially Responsible Investing By Graham Russell

The University of Colorado at Denver Business School recently hosted an event in which Elizabeth Seeger, a principal at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co (KKR), who manages its responsible investment efforts and Green Portfolio Program, outlined the reasons why KKR has embraced sustainability as a key strategic driver for enhancing shareholder value in its investment portfolio. About 100 local business people, students and faculty attended the event, which also featured Ellen Sandberg, Vice President at First Data Corporation, a KKR-backed company.

KKR?s global private equity investments number nearly 80 companies with more than $200 billion in revenues and 900,000 employees. Seeger explained that the acquisition of TXU, the largest Texas utility company, in 2007, highlighted how KKR could proactively manage sustainability and engage with stakeholders. It was the first time that non-investors were provided a seat at the table before a deal happened. This ultimately led to the firm forming a long-term institutional partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF),?in 2008, to assist in the process of identifying ways in which sustainability-based thinking could enhance the firm?s role as a creator of increased shareholder value.

In 2009, KKR furthered its commitment by becoming one of the first U.S.-based private equity firms to sign on to the United Nations? Principles for Responsible Investment. This coincided with the launch of the?Green Portfolio Program (GPP) in which they worked with EDF and three of KKR?s private equity portfolio companies in a pilot program designed to achieve cost savings through initiatives aimed at cutting energy and water consumption, and reducing waste. Subsequently, KKR has steadily expanded the GPP and, as of the end of 2011, has announced a financial impact of $365 million from these initiatives across 13 of the companies involved in the program. Through the GPP, KKR estimates that it has avoided 2.2 million tons of waste and 810,000 tons of GHG emissions, and reduced water usage by 300 million liters.

Seeger emphasized that the GPP is a rigorous and disciplined effort to identify, implement and track the results of environmental initiatives, but that it is the responsibility of each portfolio company to implement the most appropriate actions for its particular type of business. KKR concentrates on creating shared value through the formation of partnerships between its various portfolio companies and through workshops and seminars designed to highlight sustainability success stories. Its portfolio also includes a number of investments in companies offering solutions to some of society?s sustainability challenges such as renewable energy and water treatment products or services.

KKR is expanding the GPP to other companies in its investment portfolio, but, in answer to a question from the audience, Seeger emphasized that KKR does not directly purchase for its portfolio companies technologies and services required to achieve sustainability goals in a company, though it will from time to time help in identifying appropriate service providers. She explained that the best way to think of it is that KKR offers a set of best practices and encourages the use of those practices and vendors where appropriate.

In response to another audience question, Seeger stated that the 5-7 year timeframe KKR maintains a private equity investment (on average) before exiting is generally long enough for considerable progress to be made on sustainability initiatives. Simple operational and/or behavioral changes can often deliver a payback in 2-3 years, although large sustainability projects with heavy upfront investment sometimes appear challenging in terms of their ability to achieve an acceptable ROI ? they may need a longer time horizon. She also pointed out that investors in many parts of the world expect this type of approach. For example, many large European investors such as pension funds are long-term investors that actively seek to invest in companies with vigorous sustainability strategies.

One audience member also suggested that many of the cost savings supposedly achieved through sustainability thinking would occur regardless as part of a private equity firm?s normal focus on operational improvement. Seeger disagreed, stating that looking at operations ?through a sustainability lens? frequently throws up opportunities for improvements that would not be identified through normal operational review processes.

KKR has also been promoting non-environmentally related sustainability initiatives, although Seeger acknowledged that measuring the impact of socially oriented initiatives can be more difficult than those focused on things like energy efficiency or waste reduction programs. For example, it is working with the American Heart Association to encourage employee wellness programs in some of its companies.

Seeger acknowledged that it?s difficult to know whether Wall Street analysts are taking into account a company?s sustainability initiatives, even though the big accounting and consulting firms are certainly paying much greater attention to this area. One reason for this is that there is no standard approach to reporting sustainability programs and their results, neither is there (in the U.S.) any requirement to do so. Seeger is collaborating with the new Sustainability Accounting Standards Board to work toward standard methods of reporting Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG ? approximately equivalent to sustainability) data to permit analysts to make better comparisons on these aspects of companies? operations.

Seeger made a compelling argument that KKR clearly understands that the leading companies of the future will be those that grasp the resource challenges the world faces and that have adopted sustainability strategies to enhance their competitive position and create increased shareholder value. Hopefully, we can take KKR?s strong commitment to sustainability as an encouraging sign that the investment community in general is beginning to allocate resources and capital to those organizations that understand that environmentally and socially responsible behavior is simply good business.

Part 2 will summarize Ellen Sandberg?s presentation on how First Data Corporation has approached participation in KKR?s GPP.

Lab that made tainted steroid shots to get 'CSI' treatment

Investigators are sifting through records and testing a Massachusetts lab to determine how a fungus associated with a form of meningitis worked its way into products that should have been sterile.

"It's really 'CSI' stuff," says Eric Kastango, president and owner of ClincalIQ, a New Jersey-based consulting firm that aims to help the industry meet safety standards. "The microoganism in the vials is the same microoganism in the patients. The question is: How did it get in the vials in the pharmacy?"

The incident involves the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Framingham, Mass., which is no stranger to regulator scrutiny. Records released Monday by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health indicate that the company has been the subject of several complaints and inspections since 1999.

In the current case, large shipments of injectable steroid formulated by NECC have sickened 308 people in 17 states and killed at least 23, according to figures updated on Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Some 14,000 patients in all may have received contaminated injections.

Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz

Compounding pharmacies typically produce limited quantities of medicines whose formulation or dose is tailored to patients ? pets as well as people ? whose doctors deem as inappropriate treatment standard doses of mass-produced medicine. In addition, hospital pharmacies can tap advanced compounding pharmacies for some of the sterile medicines the hospitals use.

The US hosts more than 7,500 pharmacies that provide advanced compounding services, according to the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacies. Of those, some 3,000 produce sterile compounds.

Contamination incidents involving sterile compounds from compounding pharmacies are rare, but they do happen. Between 1990 and early 2012, at least 21 incidents involving contaminated sterile medicines from compounding pharmacies have occurred, killing 25 patients and leaving more than 120 others with serious side effects, according to a list compiled for the Institute of Safe Medication Practices, based in Horhsam, Pa.

In some ways, the potential for at least tiny amounts of contamination comes with any compounding, acknowledges Kara Weatherman, a pharmacist and clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University in West Lafayatte, Ind.

"You try to avoid the potential for contamination," she says. "But unless you're working in an environment where there are no particles, there's always a chance that something is going to end up in your product."

In the case of microoganisms such as the fungus in the NECC products, the longer a vial sits around waiting to be shipped or used, the longer the microoganisms have to expand their colony. Testing a product before it leaves the pharmacy to ensure it's sterile can in some cases take up to 14 days ? which can be impractical if the shipment is urgent.

"In those cases you just say: 'OK, we're only going to use this drug for five days.' You limit the shelf life," she says, to prevent any microbial contaminants from going into population overdrive.

How materials were stored and how long were they in storage are two issues that investigators look into, says Edmund Elder Jr., director of the Zeeh Pharmaceutical Experiment Station at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

According to Food and Drug Administration records, one of the agency's concerns about NECC in 2006 was that it repackaged sterile, injectable drugs ? a process that exposes the sterile drug to contamination as vials are opened and the contents are transferred to syringes. The FDA warning letter also raised related storage issues.

Beyond process issues, the company also has come under scrutiny for the large amounts of drugs it produces.

"We're finding out that volume out of this pharmacy was astronomical," says Mr. Kastango says. The numbers suggest that its operation had crossed the divide between compounding to match prescriptions and out-and-out manufacturing, he adds.

The fungus involved in the NECC case can crop up in homes, soils, water supplies, or the air, says Dr. Elder, who has participated in investigations of previous incidents at compounding pharmacies. It can enter a lab on shoes, on the lab coat of someone outside taking a break and not changing into clean lab garb after returning, or though air ducts, adds Mr. Kastango, pointing to past examples.

Investigators typically aim to pinpoint the pathway by which a contaminant entered the product. But they also eye a pharmacy's environmental-monitoring effort, which is supposed to check for the presence of potential contaminant organisms within the facility. Such efforts are included in a detailed set of international standards, which is the foundation for federal regulations as well as regulations in many states. The standards also call for periodic checks of employees ? swab-testing hands and lab suits, for instance.

Inside a facility, some small amount of contamination may be present, specialists say. The key is to make sure minimal contamination remains minimal.

Reflecting on incidents he's helped investigate, Elder draws an analogy to a catastrophic airliner crash: "You can have single things go wrong in any flight, and the plane still lands in the end. But if you have multiple things go wrong, and the pilots involved don't react appropriately, we see a catastrophic event."

"It's not necessarily one thing that went wrong, but a number of different things that went wrong that sometimes have built up over time," he adds."Someone took a shortcut, nothing happened, so that becomes their normal way of operating."

ASUS outs ET2300 all-in-one desktop with articulating, 23-inch touchscreen, optional Thunderbolt

If you're a PC maker launching a new lineup of Windows 8 devices, you're going to look awfully square if you don't have at least one touch-enabled all-in-one to show off. Clearly, ASUS got the memo. Here at a press event in New York City, the company announced the ET2300, a 23-inch desktop whose display can be pushed down to lie basically flat -- a pretty ubiquitous form factor these days. Starting with that IPS screen, it has 1080p resolution and promises horizontal viewing angles of 178 degrees. Under the hood, it runs your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, with either integrated Intel graphics or NVIDIA's GT 630M GPU. (Even then, you can choose between one and two gigs of dedicated video memory.) Other specs include up to 8GB of RAM, up to 2TB in HDD storage, a slot-loading DVD drive, Intel Wireless Display and optional Thunderbolt connectivity. Additionally, like ASUS' other products (even its tablets and phones), it makes use of SonicMaster's audio technology. We haven't heard anything regarding pricing or availability just yet, but we'll update this post if we do.

In Consulting, Attitude Is Everything|Women In Consulting Blog

Every year, Women in Consulting (WIC) conducts an annual survey on consulting best practices and compensation. I?ve had the pleasure of working with Jennifer Berkley-Jackson on this survey for the past three years (this is the 11th anniversary of the survey?and Jen has done all eleven!), and every year, attitude appears amongst the advice participants offer for building your business.

And attitude really is everything. If you?re good but you have doubts, it impacts your business. If you?re impatient, it impacts your business. If you?re negative, it impacts your business. You get the idea.

Four of my favorite quotes from this year?s survey really some up the importance of attitude in consulting:

?Keep a positive attitude. Things can change dramatically in a week.?

?Stick with it?some days, just showing up counts for a lot. And remember, if it were all that damn easy, everybody would be doing it.?

?If you believe you have a service/product to offer the world, put together a strong plan to achieve specific goals. Don?t let nay-sayers take your vision from you. It takes up to three years to really get a business up and running, where your phone is ringing. Believe in yourself and don?t give up.?

?Be brave enough to raise your rates! If you were a full-time employee, you?d get a regular raise; and yet consultants are so timid to ask for a raise, they go for years without any increase.?

So, remember?

  • Be bold
  • Be positive
  • Be generous
  • Be patient
  • Be yourself
  • Believe in yourself and ask for what you?re worth

And?

?let me know what you do to keep your attitude flying high and how it helps your business.

And?

?if hasn?t worked for you, I want to hear from you, too!

And (the last one, I promise!)?

?if you want to learn more about the results of WIC?s 11th Annual Consulting Best Practices and Compensation Survey, join us for our webinar on November 7 at 11am PDT. If you can?t make it, the webinar will also be available on-demand. The full survey report will also be made available to WIC full and leaders? network members around mid-October.
