Family Friendly Christmas Party Ideas ? Celebrations at Home

I?m excited to finally share this project I worked on with Urbanity Studios. I spoke with them several months ago about styling a party around one of their invitations, but they also wanted to highlight the fact that they can customize them through colors and wording, and offer coordinating pieces as well. I decided to style the same basic party in 3 different color schemes and I?ll be sharing each one separately.

Today is our traditional color palate of red and green, but our decorative details are whimsical and playful for a Family Friendly Christmas party. Read on for the details, and to get your FREE downloadable tags that match this set?

Get the Look:

  • This entire party was inspired by the patchwork Christmas tree invitation with it?s whimsical tree and string of ornaments graphic. Send out invitations soon, and use their coordinating address label wraps for a completed look.
  • Since ?whimsy? is the word of the day, I used dots and stripes throughout the decor. It doesn?t get more whimsical than dots! This also appeals to our younger guests at this family party.
  • White fudge dipped Oreos are dressed up with decorations from the baking aisle ? a simple trick anyone can do, and get that ?designer? look.
  • Urbanity Studios can provide coordinating signs & menus for your party too. I used a small sign to frame a menu for the sweets table ? an alternative to using individual food labels.

  • This easy menu consists of cupcakes, cheesecake mousse parfaits, white dipped Oreos, white truffles, powdered donuts, and various candies. Spoons for the parfaits are dressed up with tiny Santa hats found at the craft store.
  • I made favor boxes out of large matchboxes, and wrapped them in scrapbook paper. A coordinating sticker from Urbanity Studios tops them off in style. Fill them up with small candies or a small ornament.
  • Serving a red tinted punch in an apothecary jar keeps the party?s colors uninterrupted. Just use a punch bowl ladle to scoop it up.
  • Put your Christmas packages to work for you and let them decorate your party space. Stack boxes and place them in nooks and corners to add brightness.
  • The backdrop was designed to resemble the invitation with it?s hanging ornaments. I used ornament wall clings and ?hung? them with thin ribbon. A thicker ribbon is used like a swag to frame out the entire dessert table.

This was such a fun project to work on and I can?t wait to share the other 2 party design with you. Urbanity Studios has a wonderful gift to you as well. They are offering FREE Christmas tags that coordinate with each of the 3 parties I styled.? Just use a hole punch to loop a ribbon through, and tie them on. ? Get the downloads here.

TV shows credited with fall in pregnancies : Family First NZ

Posted by Denise on Saturday, November 17, 2012

The Dominion Post 17 November 2012
Once blamed for glamorising children having babies, teen pregnancy reality shows are now credited with a drop in New Zealand?s teenage pregnancy rates. A new report from the Abortion Supervisory Committee suggested shows like 16 and Pregnant might deter unwanted pregnancies by depicting the struggle young people faced when raising children. The show, and other spin-offs, chronicle the struggles girls face when they become pregnant while still in high school. It also suggested social media peer pressure against being a young mother, and increased contraception use might also have contributed to the falling rates. Last year 4247 teenagers gave birth ? down 387 from 2010, Statistics New Zealand figures show. Teenage abortion rates fell as well, down 17 per cent from 2010. Family Planning national medical adviser Christine Roke said her organisation had supported the broadcast of reality television series highlighting the struggles teenaged parents faced. She was delighted by the report?s suggestion the shows could be having a positive effect. ?Reality TV is a great form of education,? Dr Roke said. ?What is striking about the report is that it is the younger age group that seem to be dropping, which is great news, because they are particularly vulnerable when it comes to handling unintended pregnancies.?

SELF-CONFIDENCE AND BRAIN INJURY - FACT SHEET

MENTAL HEALTH

SELF-CONFIDENCE AND BRAIN INJURY - FACT SHEET

How we feel about ourselves can plummet after a brain injury due to many different causes.

A brain injury can directly lead to depression and fatigue which have a major impact on self-esteem. A group of brain injury survivors once met to discuss and find strategies for issues such as self-confidence. They felt that one felt confident when having a purpose to life, feeling loved, doing well in your chosen role, having hope for the future and being content with who you were. A brain injury was seen as impacting on every issue discussed, with the result that self-confidence was always a problem following a brain injury.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SELF-CONFIDENCE

The group found that the degree of understanding shown by people close to them and the reaction of the general public made a big difference to how they felt about themselves. Families who understood the effects of the brain injury and were supportive instead of critical played a major part in the brain injury survivor feeling more confident. This issue was a difficult one when there were no outward visible signs of a brain injury, such as a wheelchair or facial scarring. In these cases families were more likely to be critical of the survivor's cognitive problems.

Those who constantly compared their current situation and Acquired Brain Injurylities with their situation before the acquired brain injury had more trouble with self-confidence, as did those who could not cope with negative comments from others.

Assertion was seen as critical in becoming more confident. Many felt that they tended either to being resentful and sullen, or became abusive and aggressive in conflict situations.

The passive approach was seen as letting others "stand on" them and push them around. It also involves agreeing with others despite personal feelings. This often led to resentment and levels of distress building up over time.

The aggressive approach was viewed as people "getting their own way" by arguing, making demands, threatening and generally stepping on others. Although people who use this approach may get their own way a lot of the time, others often did not want to be around them.

They discussed how the ideal is two-way communication where problems are solved and the message is put across in a way that allows people to feel good about themselves. Survivors knew that they needed to work on communication skills so that they could see the other person's viewpoint and know how to approach topics appropriately.

The group agreed that body language was an important part of being assertive, including: maintaining eye contact, straight body posture and calm speech.

Sometimes it helped to practise what they had to say to someone else.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE

Survivors often feel that they needed to relearn social skills lost after their brain injury. As this often leads to losing friends and having trouble making new ones, this can be a major key to building up confidence again.

Being prepared to listen to the other person

If someone is tired or in a particularly upset mood, it is better if they calmly tell the other person that they are unable to listen, rather than trying to listen when unable to concentrate. The other person may appreciate the suggestion of another time that will be more suitable.

Listening and clarifying

It was considered important that people give their full attention when listening and ask for more information when needed, e.g. 'I don't follow, can you explain more clearly?'.

Acknowledging the other person and listening effectively

This was considered an important part of letting the other person know they have been heard and understood. The best way to do this is by acknowledging their ideas and feelings, e.g. nodding or saying 'I realise that you must be really frustrated about this too', or, 'I can see where you are coming from'.

PERSONAL STRATEGIES FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE

Brain injury survivors have suggested the following personal strategies for feeling better about themselves:

  • Choose to spend time with positive people, not negative people
  • Become more self-aware and get rid of negative, unhealthy, unproductive thoughts
  • Take up hobbies you will enjoy
  • Set realistic goals and recognise small gains and achievements
  • Learn problem-solving skills to handle the bad times
  • Help someone else
  • Practise relaxation
  • Write a poem or verse that has personal meaning for you
  • Work on meeting new people and improving existing relationships
  • Make a plan for keeping in contact with others, and do something social every week
  • Be assertive and communicate your needs to others - not aggressive or passive
  • Persist despite setbacks
  • Join a support group for survivors
  • Look after your health by eating well, exercising and getting sufficient sleep
  • Use humour and see the funny side of things
  • Accept personal limitations while aiming towards self-improvement
  • Get into positive books and movies (e.g. Power of One, Shawshank Redemption)
  • Grasp opportunities, experience life and make the most of it!

MANTRAS

Some survivors have found mantras useful. These are personal statements or affirmations that can help you get through a tough time. Some examples are:

  • If I change my thoughts I can change my world
  • If it is to be, it's up to me
  • Always stop and think before you act
  • Learning is an active process and I will learn by doing
  • Actions speak louder than words.

Many take comfort in the centuries-old prayer:

"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Madison County Sheriff's investigators searched the waters of the Flint River off Winchester Road Friday afternoon.

Sources close to the investigation said they were looking for evidence in connection with seven murders in Tennessee and Alabama. Neighbors in the area said investigators have searched the area a handful of times since the murders in October.

WAFF's crew on the scene witnessed investigators pull something from the water earlier Friday morning.

Investigators used long sticks and paddles to search the water throughout the day.

The investigation into the murders started last month when Lincoln County investigators found the bodies of 22-year-old Chabreya Campbell, her unborn child, her 18-month-old son Rashad Ragland, and 21-year-old Amber Mccaulley at a home in Tennessee.

Just a few hours later, officers found the body of 21-year-old Jessica Brown.

The next night, Jeffrey Pope was shot to death in Huntsville. The next morning, utility workers found the body of Warren Crutcher in a wooded area in Hazel Green.

Investigators said all the murders are connected. No charges have been made in the case.

Droid DNA and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Droid DNA and Galaxy Note 2.

They?re both big, for sure ? but the waistline is where things really show

What a difference a half-inch can make. So in one hand we?ve got the new Verizon Droid DNA. A 5-inch display that?s taller than most phones, but retains the slim waistline. And in the other hand we?ve got the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. It?s 5.5 inches diagonally. And while it?s even taller than the DNA ? by about a centimeter ? it?s the extra width of the Galaxy Note 2 that really separates the two phones.?

The Droid DNA still feels like a relatively traditional Android smartphone in your hand. A big one, sure. But HTC?s new design, with the battery sandwiched between the PCB and the display, keeps it feeling slim, when, in fact it?s actually 0.33 mm thicker than the Note 2.?

But it?s that difference in width that sends the Note 2 over the top. Again, it?s a full centimeter difference. And what the Note 2 makes up for in size it lacks in resolution, still sporting a 720p display, whereas the DNA is a full 1080p. That?ll likely change in the next generation. But for now, the DNA takes it in pixels per inch, and it?s definitely apparent.

Some other differences ? buttons in different places, Touchwiz versus Sense ? we?d almost call cosmetic. Maybe you prefer one over the other, and that?s cool. (My preferences are well known.) The Note 2 wins out in that you can swap batteries and add a microSD card, for sure.

But pound for pound, the Droid DNA and the Note 2 really are in different classes.?

Making the Leap to Become IHSA Official | IUSportCom

Coming off of a 1st and 2nd place finish at the 2012 Team Dance Illinois state finals in early March of this year, Barrington High School?s Varsity Broncettes knew the feeling of ultimate success. As a former three-year member and two-time captain of the team, it was a proud way to finish my senior year. Unfortunately however, the real gratification I wanted as an athlete never came with the three state championships earned over my high school career? until now.

The popularity and awareness of high-school dance teams has risen over the past few years, along with it?s recognition of becoming an official IHSA regulated sport.

Illinois High School dance teams have competed as a part of the Team Dance Illinois (TDI) association in their state series, for as long as competitive high school dance teams have been around. However, the state finals for TDI have never been recognized as an official IHSA championship because competitive dance has never received the ?sport status? from IHSA, until recently.

Due to the rising interest displayed by schools and athletic programs across the state, Tracie Henry, IHSA Coordinator of Special Programs made the executive decision to add the dance team state series to the list and make competitive dance for all high schools in Illinois an official IHSA sport.

?Based on the information we have received from our principals and athletic directors, they tell us when schools have interests like that. We can also keep track of that through our emerging sports.? -Henry

On October 11th of this year, a state series in competitive dance with an inaugural season starting in the winter of 2012-2013, was finally approved by the IHSA Board of Directors.

Although the official IHSA competitive dance state series has been approved, there are some concerns about the proposal that has not yet been finalized.

?The structure has not been completely approved as of this point,? Henry said. ?We haven?t approved a rubric, the score sheet or anything like that. There are some recommendations that our advisory committee has made, but we haven?t brought a final recommendation to our board at this point.?

Most likely this new proposal will change a lot of aspects of the competition for the dance teams and many coaches and dancers alike have voiced their opinions and concerns about this major move from TDI. Hannah Mills, senior on the Barrington Broncettes dance team, states that these changes are something to be worried about.

?Some people I?ve heard from, coaches, dancers, and faculty of TDI, are all very concerned that IHSA will take the ?art? aspect out of dance because of the fewer, more technical categories that are being proposed.?

Coaches across the state have also voiced concerns about the rise in difficulty for making it to state because there are less categories to compete in and one chance to qualify at sectionals, as before teams were able to qualify at any competition given they reached a certain score. Yes, this may make things more difficult but ultimately that?s how true athletics work.

Regardless of these concerns and a thanks to Tracie Henry and the collective Board, all high-school competitive dance teams across Illinois will now be able to compete as IHSA official athletes and hopefully gain the respect of other athletic programs and spectators as they have worked for it and deserve it.

New leadership in China, but same old decision-making problems

China's transition to new leadership may portray a decisive nation to the rest of the world, but internally Chinese politics often make policy decisions a slow-going process.

By Charles Hutzler,?Associated Press / November 14, 2012

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, (center), Central Commission for Discipline Inspection head He Guoqiang, (l.), and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Chairman Jia Qinglin raise their hands to show approval for a work report during the closing ceremony for the 18th Communist Party Congress held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, Wednesday.

Lee Jin-man/AP

Months of sharp behind-the-scenes jostling reach a climax Thursday with the announcement of a new Chinese leadership that almost regardless of its makeup is likely to be much like the one it replaces: divided, deliberative, and weak.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

All but officially announced, Xi Jinping is expected to head the new leadership as Communist Party chief, joined by Li Keqiang, the presumptive prime minster, in a choreographed succession that began five years ago when the two were anointed as successors. Alongside them at the apex of power, the Politburo Standing Committee, will be a handful of senior politicians drawn from top positions in the provinces and bureaucracies.

Their ascent was nudged along Wednesday when a weeklong party congress closed by naming Xi, Li and the other leading candidates to the Central Committee, a 205-member body which appoints the new leadership Thursday. Left off the list was Hu Jintao, who is retiring as party chief after 10 years. A top general told reporters that Hu is also relinquishing his sole remaining powerful post, as head of the military, a significant break from the past that would give Xi leeway to establish his authority.

Leadership lineups typically strike a balance between different interest groups in the 82 million-member party. None of new leaders owe their positions to Xi, but to other political patrons. Decisions are made largely by consensus, forcing Xi to bargain with his colleagues who have their own allegiances and power bases. Party elders, with Hu being the newest, exert influence over major policies through their proteges, further constraining Xi.

While China's leadership may have an image in the rest of the world as decisive and all-powerful, the reality is that decision-making tends to be a slow-going affair.

"It's a power game," said Zheng Yongnian, a China politics expert at the National University of Singapore. "The Standing Committee doesn't function well. They all have to agree, and there are too many checks on each other, so nothing gets done."

If not gridlock, the incremental, step-by-step policy-making of the past comes as China confronts slowing growth, a cavernous rich-poor gap and a clamor for change, in protests and on the Internet, for better government and curbing corruption and the privileges of the politically connected elite.

"Even for a coherent leadership, those problems are challenging, not to mention a divided leadership, which hasn't consolidated its own power base," said Zhu Jiangnan of Hong Kong University.

Unlike the stiff, ultra-reserved Hu, the 59-year-old Xi exudes a comfort with his authority, as befits the son of a hero of the revolution born into the Communist elite. Like Xi, the rest of the leadership came of age as China reopened universities and reached out to the world after the isolation of Mao Zedong's radical rule. As such, their educational backgrounds are more varied than those of Hu and the engineers he led, and they're believed to be more open to ideas.

Charisma is feared by the party, which promotes capable administrators. Bo Xilai, a telegenic top politician once considered a candidate for the leadership, was purged this year in a scandal that buffeted the party. Though he is accused of corruption and aiding the cover-up of his wife's murder of a British businessman, his crime may have been his populist rhetoric and policies that gave him a popular following, but alienated other leaders.

War Vets Face Lethal Threat From Bed Bugs Says The Counter Media

Immunology Specialist And Attorneys Issue Warnings

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) November 12, 2012

Desert War veterans suffering from mystery illnesses loosely defined as "Gulf War Syndrome" have a new concern. Medical studies and researchers now show bed bugs represent a lethal threat to America's veterans due changes to their immune system while in service in Afghanistan and Iraq. This information has not been disseminated to veterans by the Departement of Veterans Affairs. Immunology and Allergy specialist such as Dr. Robert Pulcini of Greenville, South Carolina (http://allergies.about.com/od/insectallergie1/a/bedbugs.htm) are warning that due to veteran's having significant changes to their immune systems, bed bug bites can result in life threatening anaphylactic shock which can be fatal. Dr. Pulcini and other specialists are issuing epinephrine injectors as a life saving last hope for affected soldiers. The shot is the the same shot issued to veterans to ward off chemical attacks on the battlefield. This assertation is now being backed up by major lawfirms such as Edgar Snyder and associates of Pennsylvania (http://www.edgarsnyder.com/injury/bed-bug-injuries/index.html) and many other national lawfirms from Illinois, Alabama, and California.

Secretary Eric K. Shinseki head of the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) has been informed of the need to warn veterans of the situation, as well as veterans service organizations including the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran's of America (IAVA). Veterans are being warned that they should be aware of the presence of bed bug infestations when they rent hotels and take proper precautions to avoid bites. Recent media reports on lawsuits show that French hotel giant Accor owner of Motel 6 and nearly 20 other chains, has been the target of numerous high profile lawsuits in this area, and like many other hotel congolomerates have failed to remedy the problem (http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-03-09/news/bs-md-bed-bug-verdict-20120309_1_bedbug-infestation-bunk-beds-bed-wetting). Accor, the world's largest hotel corporation is also being targeted by consumer groups such as bedbugregistry.com for knowingly having dozens of bed bug infested hotels (http://bedbugregistry.com/hotel/chains/Motel-6/). The danger posed by bed bugs is validated by a joint 2011 report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) citing the facts that bed bugs are known to cause deadly allergic reactions and infections, with their long term health threat being unknown (http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/ehs/publications/bed_bugs_cdc-epa_statement.htm).

Richmond Hill residents search for pets

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Many people left their pets behind when they evacuated Richmond Hill Saturday night following the deadly explosion.

Some victims who have returned to pick up their belongings are learning their pets may have died or are not there. Many of the homes in Richmond Hill were left open and abandoned.

Indianapolis Animal Care and Control officials said it's possible many pets escaped, and they are offering to board them.

Four year-old Marco is a buff domestic longhair kenneled at Animal Care and Control on South Harding Street. He and a 3-year-old gray domestic shorthair without a name arrived at the shelter Sunday morning. Both of them escaped the explosion in the Richmond Hill subdivision.

"The animals instinctively try to get away from the situation," said Care and Control Administrative Director Dan Shackle.

But now some families are returning and looking for their pets.

"I was in the neighborhood and a number of the houses have windows and doors that are no longer there," Shackle said. "We were out there all day yesterday."

Shackle said hours after the blast, Animal Care and Control officers came to the scene and picked up four animals. Aside from the two cats, officers also found two dogs that have been re-united with their owners.

Shackle said if any animals are recovered from the area, the shelter will board them for 10 days.

"That's standard procedure in a disaster situation. We understand some people might not be able to stay in their home or if they have to go to a hotel or something where they don't allow animals, we'll board the animals here for free," he said.

Although they have a warm place to rest, the 3-year-old tabby knows something is wrong. She hasn't eaten since arriving in the shelter.

"My hope is, and I think the owners' hope is, if there are missing animals, that those animals start to try to migrate back to the area," Shackle said.

Officers with the Animal Care and Control will come back out to the scene to Tuesday with IndyFeral.

IndyFeral will be putting out traps in and around the neighborhood hoping to catch some of the animals that ran away. They hope some of them will return back to the neighborhood.

Catholic bishops stay course on gay marriage fight

BALTIMORE (AP) ? A subdued U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops acknowledged Monday that voters rejected the stands they took against gay marriage and birth control, but gave no sign they would change their strategy ahead.

Same-sex marriage supporters made a four-state sweep of ballot measures last week, despite intensive advocacy by Roman Catholic bishops in favor of traditional marriage. Bishops also spoke out sharply against President Barack Obama's mandate that most employers provide health insurance that covers artificial contraception. Critics accused the bishops of going so far that they appeared to be backing Republican Mitt Romney.

The bishops insist their complaints were not partisan. Still, they now must face four more years with an administration many bishops characterized as a threat to the church.

"We've always maintained our openness to dialogue, and that will continue," said Baltimore Archbishop William Lori, who leads the bishops' committee on religious liberty. "As this evolves, as rule-making gets a little more clear, then our range of options will be clearer."

None of the bishops who spoke Monday directly mentioned Obama. Lori only noted that "the political landscape is the same." The bishops instead reviewed plans they developed well before Election Day to expand outreach to Latino Catholics on traditional marriage and organize events on the importance of religious freedom.

Obama won the overall Catholic vote, 50 percent to 48 percent, but Catholics split on ethnic lines. White Catholics supported Romney, 59 percent to 40 percent. However, Latino Catholics went for Obama, 75 percent to 21 percent.

Last week, Maine, Maryland and Washington became the first states ever to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote. In Minnesota, voters rejected a proposal to place a ban on gay-marriage in the state constitution, a step taken in past elections in 30 other states.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, the newly installed leader of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, said gay marriage opponents were outspent by gay rights groups, and bishops are grappling with how they can be more persuasive. Surveys by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life have found that the number of Americans who say they have no religion is at a high of 20 percent, while the number of former Catholics is so large that ex-Catholics collectively include more people than many denominations.

"The election is a symptom of a much larger problem," Cordileone said. "Most people don't understand what marriage is."

On health care, the Obama administration's birth control requirement exempts houses of worship, but does not exclude religiously affiliated hospitals and nonprofits. Obama promised to change the requirement so that insurance companies and not faith-affiliated employers would pay for the coverage. But details have not been worked out. And not only the bishops, but Catholic hospitals and some other religious leaders generally supportive of Obama's policies are saying the compromise appears to be unworkable.

Dozens of dioceses and Catholic nonprofits are suing the Obama administration over the mandate, arguing the requirement violates religious freedom.

Steve Schneck, a political scientist at the Catholic University of America who campaigned for Obama, said the bishops need to quickly reach out to the administration because the opportunity to strike a compromise will be limited once the court cases move forward.

"It's something that I think the bishops should be working for if they're serious about trying to win exemptions for hospitals and charities and similar nonprofit institutions," Schneck said. "It's in the interest of the administration to resolve this thing ahead of the lawsuits."

SS26 planning on quitting job and moving home. Anyone ... - Step Talk

SS26 has been in the army for years now. Last year he married a girl who has a 4 yr old son. So he is a step dad plus has one of the way due in a few months. He says that his military job does not allow him enough time to spend w/his family sooooooo his plan is to get out, around the same time the baby is due, and live in his MIL's basement. They will live there until he finds another job and are able to make it on their own.

So I'm very glad that DH and I's basement was not #1 on the list but since they live right across town we are by default an unspoken #2. I think this is a very bad idea. Right now ss26 has a steady income, full health insurance coverage, paid housing, etc. He wants to leave all of this for a basement with no guaranteed job and the only fall back insurance is welfare and parents taking care of them.

I have told DH that I feel this is an extremely unwise plan and that if things go awry @ MIL's then we are next in line. I want to be supportive of DH's relationship w/his children but not actually supporting them.

Besides cementing in the basement any wise suggestion?

Writing a Book

If you're trying to write, you don't have a story to tell yet.

When you've got something really worth writing, it will flow to you. Even if the writing itself isn't easy, you should be able to, for example, tell a voice recorder (or friendly listener!) all about it from start to finish.

Someone else can always clean up your ideas if you're a little rough with structure and flow, but only you can provide a story you feel passionate about. And you can't fake passion. Until it's there, you'll always just be "trying to write a story" ? not writing your story.

Put another way, writing a book is just a mechanical process. There's nothing meaningful or special to it. It's like sex: if you just set out to do it, mechanically, following all the checklists and guidelines for what it's supposed to look like ? you won't be having one of those cozy "oh god" movie afterglow scenes, trust me.

Telling a story, on the other hand, is a passionate process that comes from the heart with the help of your head. You can tell a story in lots of ways: film, animation, sock puppets, cardboard dinosaurs. Some people just choose writing as the most comfortable way to do it. Like sex: there's lots of ways to express to someone what you're feeling. It's not the specifics of the method, it's how much passion and heart is sincerely in it that determines how good it is. Rough edges can always be cleaned up and improved with time and feedback, but heart transplants are a bigger issue.

If you're telling a story you care about, you won't need all the anxietal trappings and formatting guidelines to reassure you ? you'll be too busy telling it. The rest is just formality.

War widow sues Fox over film featuring her husband

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? A widow of a U.S. Army soldier killed in a blast in Afghanistan has sued Fox Cable Networks and the National Geographic Society over a documentary that showed her husband and family.

The documentary about a combat hospital called "Inside Afghan ER" featured Staff Sgt. Kevin Casey Roberts, who was serving with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle in Khost province in Afghanistan in 2008.

A year after his death, his wife, Donnice Roberts, got a call from a service member in Germany who saw her husband in the documentary. According to the lawsuit filed in Texas on Nov. 1, she never knew there was video footage related to her husband's death and that the documentary existed.

She is seeking at least $750,000 in damages and wants a judge to prevent the film from airing again. She also wants the cable network to stop using images of military families without their permission.

The documentary was produced and distributed by the National Geographic Society, and was promoted and distributed by Fox Networks Inc. and Fox Entertainment Group Inc., which owns part of the NatGeo network.

Scott Grogin, a spokesman for Fox Networks Group, said the film never aired in the United States. Instead, it aired on the National Geographic International channel.

Donnice Roberts said an image of herself and her children that had been stored on her husband's laptop was used in the documentary during scenes about his memorial service in Afghanistan.

"The filmmakers got permission from the military to shoot the documentary and as part and parcel of that, were granted permission to shoot the memorial service," he said.

No one immediately answered the phone or email for National Geographic.

Donnice Roberts said she suffered mental anguish, shock and sadness from learning about the documentary.

"Moreover, Mrs. Roberts has fears and concerns that her minor children are depicted as the children of a warrior in the war on terror, which is fought by fanatic, radical individuals who have shown a propensity and desire to kill Americans, including women and children," the lawsuit said.

Sgt. Roberts joined the Army after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and served two tours in Iraq before deploying to Afghanistan. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart and was buried in Texas, where his family lives.

The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division is based in Fort Campbell, Ky.

BBC director general resigns over 'shoddy journalism'

LONDON (Reuters) - BBC Director General George Entwistle resigned on Saturday, just two months into the job, after the state-funded broadcaster put out a programme denounced by the corporation's chairman as shoddy journalism.

The BBC, reeling from revelations that one of its former stars was a paedophile, brought further problems on its head when a flagship news programme aired a mistaken allegation that a former senior politician sexually abused children.

The BBC had already issued a full apology on Friday, but on Saturday its director general had to admit under questioning from his own journalists that he had not known in advance about the Newsnight report, weeks after being accused of being too hands-off over the previous scandal on the same programme.

Accepting Entwistle's resignation, BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten said: "This is undoubtedly one of the saddest evenings of my public life.

"At the heart of the BBC is its role as a trusted global news organisation.

"As the editor-in-chief of that organisation, George has very honourably offered us his resignation because of the unacceptable mistakes -- the unacceptable shoddy journalism -- which has caused us so much controversy."

Entwistle quit after strong criticism over the Newsnight programme.

"I listened to the director general with increasing disbelief," John Whittingdale, chairman of parliament's powerful media committee, told Reuters. "The level of failure of management at every level within the BBC, up to and including the director general, is just extraordinary."

The BBC and its bosses have been under huge pressure since a rival broadcaster carried charges last month that the late Jimmy Savile, one of the most recognisable personalities on British television in the 1970s and 80s, was a prolific sex offender.

EXPOSE WITHDRAWN

Suggestions have surfaced of a paedophile ring inside the broadcaster at the time and a BBC cover-up. To complicate matters for Entwistle, Newsnight pulled a planned expose of Savile shortly after his death last year, and the BBC went ahead with tribute shows.

Having been widely criticised for not broadcasting that expose, which led to its editor stepping aside, Newsnight is now being lambasted for its November 2 report on sexual abuse at children's care homes in North Wales during the 1970s.

Steve Messham, a witness, told Newsnight that a senior Conservative had raped him when he was a child in one of the homes.

Newsnight did not identify the politician, but the name of Alistair McAlpine, Conservative Party treasurer from 1975 to 1990 during Margaret Thatcher's premiership, quickly appeared on the Internet and social media sites.

On Friday, McAlpine went public to rigorously deny the allegations and threaten legal action.

Hours later, Messham said he had misidentified McAlpine to Newsnight. The programme admitted it had not approached McAlpine for a comment, or shown Messham a picture of McAlpine, before airing the report.

Castigated for what he agreed was a slow response to the Savile disclosures, Entwistle demanded a report on the incident by Sunday and suspended all Newsnight investigations.

The erroneous Newsnight report had been cleared by senior managers and lawyers, and commentators queried why Entwistle had been kept in the dark in the wake of the furore over Savile.
