Tribute to Orbmu2k's Windows Gadgets

Artist's Note

An attempt at creating an alternative to Orbmu2k's Intel Core Series and GPUObserver Windows Gadgets.

I used and referenced his gadgets regularly, but after the Windows Gadgets vulnerability and Microsoft's "fix" being to disable gadgets completely, I had trouble finding a replacement. So, this is my attempt at recreating Orbmu2k's gadgets.

Requires OpenHardwareMonitor. I chose this route because I'm a gamer and I use ENB graphic modifications on some games and I've found OpenHardwareMonitor to work perfectly and not cause me to look for workarounds when using programs like MSI Afterburner.

Setup instructions are in the readme.txt file and in the skin .ini files in your Documents/Rainmeter/Skins/TtOWG folder

Some not so apparent features of these skins:

* CPU and GPU Temps will turn Red when they exceed a value that you can set
* Memory usage bars for system RAM and GPU's will turn Orange when they exceed values that you can set

Licensing: the artist has specified that ports and mods are allowed.

K9 Web Protection Browser (for Android)

K9 Web Protection Browser (free) is a very simple app that blocks offensive Web content, malware, and spyware from your child's Android device as he surfs the Internet. It's decent if "free" if is your primary concern, but the complete lack of configurable settings?like customizing a user profile's filter? and one major weakness make me hesitate to recommend it.

Unlike most parental control browsers, like McAfee Family Protection Android Edition ($19.99/year) and McAfee Family Protection Android Edition ($19.99/year), Net Nanny 2.0 ($19.99/year), K9 can't select categories of content to filter to make it more age appropriate, nor can you quickly whitelist or blacklist URLs.

It doesn't perform up to par on newer devices, though this is an issue with the Android operating system rather than K9. While testing the app on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus I learned that Android devices running Android 4.X couldn't support key features: blocking other browsers, YouTube, and Google Play. Samsung apparently broke the redirection functionality in later flavors of Android, so you can't block other browsers, the YouTube app, or Google Play app on the device. However a K9 spokesman assured that Samsung is fixing this in their next update. This isn't K9's fault, but it'd benefit potential users to include a warning in the app's description. I tested this on a Samsung Galaxy S II running Android 2.3.5. ?

Simple Setup?Except One Problem
Practically no user effort is required by this app. Simply download, sign up, and allow K9 to be a Device Admin so your child can't uninstall the app. The biggest problem I saw during setup was that in order to install an additional "Install Helper," which prevents K9 from being killed by the task manager, you have to download a file outside Google Play. To do this, you have to temporarily disable a native setting that blocks non-Play downloads?the most common channel for Android malware.? ?

A Foxy Browser
K9 is built on top of the full-featured Firefox Mobile browser. It looks and feels just like Firefox, including tabbing, plug-in support, and bookmarking, but replaces the orange color scheme with Bluecoat's blue.? Loading pages isn?t as smooth or fast as Chrome or Opera, but it does the job.

Inflexible Filter
How does the K9 Browser know what to block? According to a product manager, the Android browser is hooked up to the same intelligent, cloud-based filter that powers the K9 Web Protection Browser for desktop users?that?s more than 70 million data points. Every time a child tries to load a website, the URL is instantly scanned against K9?s database of blacklisted sites that contain pornography, hate speech, violence, gambling and more than 55 other categories. It also removes links to "parent-child discussion" topics like abortion, sexuality, and dating.

My colleagues and I got a little creative when testing out the filter?s capabilities. Search terms like "porn," "poker," and "boobs" turned up 0 search results, while "penis" only served medical links that didn?t contain images. On the other hand "p0rn" and "b00bs" showed plenty. Moving one level up, phrases like "abortion methods" and "suicide" yielded normal Google results, and "teabagging? served, well, some explicit images. None of these terms would have would have gotten past McAfee Family Protection Android Edition or Net Nanny 2.0 for Android.

You Get What You Pay For
K9 Web Protection Browser (for Android) lacks many standard parental-control features elsewhere, namely the ability to customize a filter per user, or whitelist and blacklist URLs. Furthermore until Samsung fixes a redirect function in Android 4.x devices, K9 can't block alternate browsers, or YouTube, and Google Play within the browser. ?

K9 Web Protection Browser is free and runs pretty smoothly, but a truly concerned parent can spend an extra $20 a year for a much more powerful, fully-configurable parental control app.?

The road to freedom

A Christian Science perspective: For many people in the United States, the Fourth of July inspires celebrating freedom. The quest for freedom, regardless of one's national origin, runs deep in the human heart.

By Laura Clayton / July 3, 2012

The car was packed, and my husband and I were preparing to head home from a vacation in Toronto back to Boston. I studied the map our hosts had provided and saw a yellow highlighted route they had drawn guiding us not west and south down to Buffalo ? our usual route ? but east along the northern shore of Lake Ontario, toward Kingston.

After some coaxing on their part, we decided to try it. Two hours later, as we crossed the majestic Thousand Islands Bridge over the glittering St. Lawrence River, we were not sorry. As the highway spilled down into the serene Amish farmlands of upstate New York, we marveled that we had never thought to go this beautiful way before!

All it took was a change of thought ? a willingness to try something different. In short, we had gone from ignorance to understanding.

I got to thinking: In the larger scheme of things, it appears that many people within families, businesses, governments, and even nations are ?driving the same old road home.? These ?rutted highways? take form as unrelenting family strife, economic turmoil, endemic warfare, or racial bigotry. Each road represents a kind of self-imposed bondage with no exit ramp in sight. Willfulness and ignorance seem to rule the day. How can humanity find a new road to freedom?

By thinking rightly. Qualities of right thinking, such as understanding, discernment, openness to new ideas, and integrity to truth, are like finger posts pointing the better way home. They reverse one?s path down the road of ignorance and the suffering associated with it. More than human goodness, these traits have a divine origin. These God-given qualities are inherent in our genuine, spiritual identity.

In reality, man is the image and likeness of God, or Truth. So it is natural for us to eschew false and enslaving patterns of thinking ? and to break through to greater mental freedom, control, balance, and insight. Such mental shifts may not happen quickly, but as on a road, whether you're turning around a bicycle or an 18-wheeler, they are certainly possible. Christ Jesus said, ?Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free? (John 8:32).

In the Bible, that?s what happened to Saul. He was on the road to Damascus to carry out persecution of Jews who were still following Jesus? teachings even though he had been crucified. But something stopped Saul in his tracks. Paul relates, ?There shone from heaven a great light round about me,? and he heard the voice of the Christ, saying, ?Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?? (Acts 22:6-9). Saul?s ignorance of Jesus? role as the promised Messiah must have hit home, for Saul found himself ?three days without sight? (Acts 9:9). He had been going down the wrong road.

But not long after, with a fresh understanding of the Christ and the new name of Paul, he joined in fellowship with Jesus? disciples. It was a stunning turnaround. In his subsequent missionary travels, Paul encouraged others not to be ?conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God? (Romans 12:2). Feeling a new freedom within, he wanted to share the good news of the ?glorious liberty of the children of God? (Romans 8:21).

This story gives me a lot of hope. The human mind, through God?s grace, can indeed be rerouted toward better aims and achievements. Has not our time witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, the winding down of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and the end of official apartheid in South Africa? And more recently, the ousting of entrenched tyrants in Egypt and Libya and the launching of the Myanmar (Burma) ?spring?? Whatever triggered these events must have first begun in individual, human thought; and while these advances didn?t happen overnight, they stand remarkable, nonetheless.

If we feel we?re on the wrong road in any area of life, we can begin to think rightly. The same Christ-spirit that Jesus embodied and that Paul felt is present with us. God can chart a new course for us. As His reflection, His image and likeness, we have the ability to ?see the light,? to follow Jesus? teachings, and to carve out happier and more productive lives, which are the hallmarks of freedom.

Mary Baker Eddy, a follower of Christ Jesus in word and deed, has this counsel: ?Know, then, that you possess sovereign power to think and act rightly, and that nothing can dispossess you of this heritage and trespass on Love? (?Pulpit and Press,??p. 3).

Paterno family: Release all emails and records

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Joe Paterno's family has called on Pennsylvania's attorney general and former FBI Director Louis Freeh to release all emails and records related to their investigations into the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal, saying a leaker or leakers have used selective emails to "smear" the late coach and university officials.

Family lawyer Wick Sollers' statement Monday followed news reports of leaked emails between administrators about graduate assistant Mike McQueary's 2001 account of an encounter between former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and a boy in the showers.

CNN reported that one email outlined a change in plans among administrators after Athletic Director Tim Curley spoke to Paterno.

"With the leaking of selective emails over the last few days, it is clear that someone in a position of authority is not interested in a fair or thorough investigation," Sollers said in the strongly worded statement.

Sollers represents the family of former coach Paterno, who was fired in November and died of cancer less than three months later. Freeh is leading the school's internal investigation into the scandal.

The release of the emails, Sollers said, was "not intended to inform the discussion, but to smear former Penn State officials, including Joe Paterno. The truth is Joe Paterno reported the 2001 incident promptly and fully ... In spite of these facts, however, numerous pundits and critics are exploiting these disconnected and distorted records to attack Joe Paterno."

Paterno, Sollers said, testified for eight minutes before the grand jury that approved charges and "told the truth to the best of his recollection." Paterno was not interviewed by the university, was not afforded due process or did not tell his story in full, and was not allowed to see the files or records now in question, the lawyer said.

Sollers called for the immediate release of all emails and records related to the case, adding that "the public should not have to try and piece together a story from a few records that have been selected in a calculated way to manipulate public opinion."

Spokespeople for Attorney General Linda Kelly didn't immediately return messages from The Associated Press after the Paterno family released its statement late Monday afternoon.

But when asked about the leaks earlier Monday, Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office, said: "We do not comment on potential grand jury materials, nor would any such materials be released by this office."

A spokesman for Freeh declined to comment, as did a Penn State spokesman.

The emails, first reported by NBC several weeks ago, were unearthed during the Freeh team's investigation, both the university and Freeh team have said, and were turned over to state prosecutors. They are expected to be discussed in Freeh's report, which is due this summer.

Sandusky was convicted last month of 45 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys. The scandal led to the ousters of school President Graham Spanier and Hall of Fame coach Paterno. Curley and Gary Schultz, a retired school administrator who was in charge of overseeing campus police in 2001, have also been charged with lying to a grand jury and failing to report suspected abuse. They have maintained their innocence.

Spanier has not been charged, and prosecutors have said Paterno was not a target of the investigation.

CNN reported on the content of the emails on Saturday. The emails showed that Curley and Schultz intended to report the allegation, then reconsidered, according to CNN, and that Spanier responded that he was "supportive" of their plan, but he worried they might "become vulnerable for not having reported it."

The change came after Curley spoke to Paterno, as referenced in Curley's email to Spanier, according to the report.

Spanier sued Penn State in May to try to get copies of his email traffic from 1998 to 2004, citing the pending investigation being conducted by Freeh. Lawyers for Penn State have asked a judge to throw out the lawsuit and said the attorney general's office, which is prosecuting Curley and Schultz, had asked them not to provide Spanier with the emails.

The Paterno family does not know the source of the leaks, Sollers said. Paterno himself was known for his abhorrence for using email and cellphones, let alone modern communication tools like Twitter.

"The question that needs to be asked is why this breach of confidentiality ... is not being objected to or otherwise addressed by those in a position of authority," Sollers said. "It should not be the responsibility of the Paterno family to call for an honest, independent investigation. Given the seriousness and complexity of this case, everyone should be demanding the full truth, not just carefully selected excerpts of certain emails."

Sollers said Paterno didn't fear the truth and had asked his family and advisers to "pursue the full truth. ... It is the course that we will follow to the end."

Some brains may be primed for pain

Addiction-related process may keep people hurting long after an injury heals

Web edition : 8:52 pm

A signal in the brain can predict who will continue to suffer back pain more than a year after an initial injury. This early warning sign could reveal new ways to reverse or prevent pain that lingers long after an injury heals, scientists report online July 1 in Nature Neuroscience.

?We?re very excited about these results,? says study coauthor A. Vania Apkarian of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. ?We think they open up a whole new way of looking at chronic pain.?

The study included 39 people with newish back pain, about half of whom still suffered a full year later. These people?s pain had turned chronic, morphing from the pain associated with the original problem to something more devastating. At the start, pain intensity was similar in people with chronic pain and in those who recovered.

But people whose pain turned chronic had an unusually strong connection between two parts of their brains: the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex. These two regions behaved in tandem, brain scans revealed, so that when one was busy the other was too. The strength of this connection predicted which participants would have lingering pain a full year later: The stronger the connection, the more susceptible a person was to chronic pain.

?This is something we can study,? says neuroscientist Laura Stone of McGill University in Montreal. ?We can figure out how to target this to prevent that transition.?

Earlier studies have catalogued brain differences in people with chronic pain and healthy controls, but researchers never knew whether such differences were the cause of chronic pain or an effect of living with it. This study is the first to uncover a signal that?s present before pain becomes chronic, Stone says.

The study may also link chronic pain development to the brain?s addiction machinery, which includes the nucleus accumbens. ?This is certainly part of the addiction pathway,? Apkarian says. Though the idea hasn?t been tested, he says, chronic pain may stem from the brain essentially becoming addicted to pain.

Stone says the concept of pain co-opting the addiction circuitry in the brain makes a lot of sense, but it?s too early to say whether that idea is right.

Major Accomplishments at Rutgers University Under the Leadership of President Richard L. McCormick

Since his return to Rutgers as the institution?s 19th president on Dec. 1, 2002, Richard L. McCormick has led the university through one of its most challenging and successful periods. Under his leadership, Rutgers has launched a series of wide-ranging initiatives that are significantly enhancing the university?s commitment to world-class instruction, groundbreaking research, enriched student life and service to the people of New Jersey and beyond. President McCormick has led Rutgers at a time of historic accomplishment and visibility, generating pride while setting records for applications, enrollment, private donations and support for research.

?ACADEMIC INITIATIVES

Transforming Undergraduate Education: In 2006, the university implemented President McCormick?s bold vision to enhance virtually every aspect of undergraduate learning and student life across the New Brunswick Campus ? the most significant reorganization of Rutgers in a quarter-century. Enhancements include establishment of the School of Arts and Sciences with its comprehensive new curriculum, first-year seminars, signature courses, dramatic expansion of opportunities for undergraduate research and honors programs, and greater support for top undergraduates competing for the most prestigious scholarships and awards.

School of Nursing-Camden: In fall 2011, the Camden Campus opened a new School of Nursing to address the overwhelming demand for a Rutgers baccalaureate nursing education in southern New Jersey through the expanded enrollment of 300 pre-licensure students and 150 registered nurse students over a six-year period.? ?

School of Public Affairs and Administration: An outgrowth of the Graduate Department of Public Administration, the new school opened on the Newark Campus in 2006 ? the first new school at Rutgers-Newark since 1972.

Childhood Studies: The nation?s first doctoral degree-granting program in this emerging discipline was launched in 2007 at Rutgers-Camden.

Interdisciplinary Initiatives: New programs in nutrition, materials and devices, transportation, childhood studies, urban entrepreneurship, and climate change and alternative energy are positioning Rutgers as an institution that is competing in the global economy while working to find solutions that benefit humanity.

GOALS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR

?At the start of the academic year, President McCormick set three major goals:

Create New Opportunities for Medical Education:? With the passage of historic legislation, Rutgers is positioned to become one of the nation?s elite research universities. The New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act will merge into Rutgers University most of the elements of the current University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey ? including the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the New Jersey Medical School, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the New Jersey Dental School, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Health Related Professions, the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health.?

Once signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie, Rutgers University?s governing boards will have a full year to review the legislation, conduct thorough due diligence and suggest any reasonable corrections that will be necessary to help Rutgers and the state achieve their goals. The creation of a comprehensive university-based health sciences center at Rutgers would attract the best medical talent; bring to New Jersey the latest medical advances and technologies; improve access to clinical trials offering hope for intractable diseases; significantly increase the flow of federal and industry research dollars into the state; and enable New Jersey residents to receive world-class medical care locally.

Build on the University?s Fundraising Success: In 2004, Rutgers completed its most successful fundraising campaign to that point in the university?s history, raising $615 million ? 23 percent higher than the campaign?s original goal.

In 2010, the university publicly launched Our Rutgers, Our Future, the most comprehensive and ambitious fundraising campaign in the university?s history. The $1 billion campaign focuses on meeting the university?s most pressing academic and financial needs ? such as providing scholarships to hundreds of undergraduates and more than doubling the number of prestigious endowed chairs to attract and retain world-class faculty.

The Our Rutgers, Our Future campaign has now raised more than $640 million, including funding for 17 new endowed chairs and 558 scholarships and fellowships. As part of this campaign, President McCormick was instrumental in securing $40 million in gifts from an anonymous donor ? the greatest amount of financial support from an individual donor in Rutgers history ? to support the following university initiatives:

  • $27 million for a challenge grant that will establish 18 new endowed chairs in a wide range of academic disciplines, including business education and the sciences
  • ?$10 million to support construction of the new Business School building on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway
  • $3 million to support the Bennett L. Smith Endowed Chair in Business and Natural Resources.

Pass a Higher Education Bond Issue: In his position as chair of the New Jersey President?s Council, President McCormick and his colleagues have worked positively with legislative leaders in Trenton to place a $750 million higher education bond issue ? the first since 1988 ? on the November 2012 statewide ballot to fund badly needed facilities on colleges and universities across the state.

NEW REVENUES FOR RUTGERS RESEARCH

Financial Support for Research: Since 2002, total annual funding for Rutgers research from the federal government, the state of New Jersey, corporations and nonprofits has increased significantly ? from $242.4 million to $433.9 million. The university has secured prestigious grants to conduct vital research in health, science, transportation and homeland security.

?NEW FACILITIES

?Livingston Campus: Rutgers? campus in Piscataway is being transformed into the model of what the university will become in the 21st century, with an emphasis on professional, executive and continuing education; state-of-the-art residential and dining facilities; and integration with the Rutgers Ecological Preserve. A newly renovated student center opened in 2010, the new dining hall facility opened in 2011, and a new student housing complex will be completed in 2012. Completion of the new Business School building is scheduled for 2013.

Partnership with Atlantic Cape Community College: This fall, Rutgers will open a new academic and administrative building on the campus of Atlantic Cape Community College in Mays Landing. The two-story, 22,000-square-foot facility will allow Rutgers to expand academic opportunities for students from Atlantic, Cape May and surrounding counties in such popular disciplines as psychology and criminal justice. The $7.5 million facility will house all Rutgers academic and administrative units at Atlantic Cape ? including a new undergraduate degree program in social work.?

Life Sciences Building: Dedicated in 2005, this Busch Campus building is home to the Human Genetics Institute, the Department of Genetics and the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials.

University Square: Housing nearly 600 students, University Square opened in 2006 ? the first new residential housing on the Newark Campus in 16 years.

Biomedical Engineering Building: This three-story facility on the Busch Campus, which opened in 2007, added nearly eight times the academic and support space to what was previously allocated to this growing discipline.

School of Law-Camden: In 2009, the university dedicated the law school?s new four-story, 53,000-square-foot building. The complex allows Rutgers to serve the community more effectively through its clinics and centers, which provide more than 30,000 hours of free legal services annually. The facility also boasts a fully functional courtroom that allows students to engage in critical moot court training on campus.

New Rutgers Business School Building in Newark: Opened in 2009, this building has substantially improved the quality of the school?s facilities and classroom technology, while expanding its capacity to meet the rapidly increasing demand for business education. The 15,000-square-foot atrium features a trading room ? a state-of-the-art facility for advanced instruction of business school students.?

Harnessing Solar Power:? The university is installing more than 40,000 high-efficiency solar panels on canopies over two large surface parking areas on the university?s Livingston Campus. The 32 acres of? solar canopies are expected to generate eight megawatts of power ? equal to the annual energy consumption of nearly 1,000 households.?When completed, the canopy system will be more than four times larger than the "solar farm? that the university opened on Livingston in 2009. When the canopy project is completed, these two facilities are expected to provide 64 percent of the power on the Livingston Campus ? saving the university $1.5 million in annual utility costs.

GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH

Cell and DNA Repository: In 2003, Rutgers? repository of DNA and cell lines became the largest university-based repository in the world. These are crucial assets for biomedical research to cure diseases like schizophrenia, diabetes and Alzheimer?s.

Fighting AIDS: Since 2004, Rutgers Chemistry and Chemical Biology Professor Eddy Arnold and his colleagues have announced a series of breakthroughs in the development of new drugs to stop the spread of AIDS. Professor Arnold?s lab at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine and Rutgers University worked together with scientists at Johnson & Johnson to develop two anti-AIDS drugs, including the drug rilpivirine that was approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration. The team used structures obtained by the Arnold lab to guide the design of the best molecules, which have exceptional potency against drug-resistant HIV.

Ancient Footprints from Anatomically Modern Feet: In 2009, Rutgers Anthropology Professor John W.K. Harris and an international team of colleagues found ancient footprints in Kenya that show some of the earliest humans walked like us and did so on anatomically modern feet 1.5 million years ago. This rare discovery marked a major contribution to the study of human evolution.

Plastic Lumber: In 2009, the U.S. Army successfully tested lumber developed from recycled plastic by Rutgers engineers ? by driving a 70-ton tank over a plastic lumber bridge at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The test proved the practical viability of plastic lumber, which is more durable and environmentally friendly than traditional treated wood.

Crossing the Atlantic: In 2009, faculty and students in Rutgers? Coastal Ocean Observation Laboratory launched and piloted a submersible robot glider, the Scarlet Knight, across the Atlantic Ocean from New Jersey to the coast of Spain ? the first successful crossing of an ocean by such a vehicle. The project proved the practicality of very long glider flights, and paved the way for the deployment of fleets of these vehicles to gather vital data about the state of the world?s oceans. ?

Preventing Prostate Cancer: In 2010, researchers at the university?s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy announced that they have determined the inner workings of a gene that normally protects against prostate cancer in mice. This discovery could lead to new treatments to prevent prostate cancer in humans.

Electron Microscope: A project at Rutgers to build one of the most advanced electron microscopes in the world was praised by the White House in 2010 as an example of a federal stimulus project that is helping to transform the nation. The project is led by the university?s Institute for Advanced Materials, Devices and Nanotechnology ? a research environment where Rutgers physicists, chemists, biologists and engineers work collaboratively.

Genome Research: Rutgers geneticists were instrumental in sequencing the genomes of rice and corn. This research ultimately will lead to bigger and better food harvests.

New Species: Rutgers doctoral candidate Jeremy Fineberg ? working with Joanna Burger, a professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, School of Arts and Sciences ? discovered a new species of frog living in the marshes of Staten Island, mainland New York and New Jersey. This discovery ? which is highly unusual in a densely populated urban area ? demonstrates the importance of locating, identifying and protecting new species in all environments.?

INSTITUTIONAL REFORMS

Alumni Relations: In 2007, the university implemented the president?s sweeping plan to strengthen and enhance the relationship between the university and its more than 400,000 alumni worldwide. The most significant change was creation of the Rutgers University Alumni Association ? a single volunteer structure to include all Rutgers graduates from all campuses.

Improved Governance: In 2008, the university adopted badly needed changes in the management of intercollegiate athletics. These changes contributed to reforms improving the governance of the entire university, including new compliance rules as well as new policies and procedures in such areas as contracts, purchasing, hiring and employee ethics.

ATHLETICS SUCCESS ? ON THE FIELD AND IN THE CLASSROOM

Moving Rutgers Athletics to National Prominence: In 2010, the Rutgers football program was ranked No. 1 in the nation by the NCAA for the academic progress of the team?s student-athletes. In 2011, Rutgers? football program ranked number two in the nation in the NCAA?s Academic Progress Rate (APR), and six Rutgers athletic programs recently recorded perfect APR scores of 1000. For the fourth consecutive year, the Rutgers football team was ranked in the top three nationally in multi-year APR rates, becoming the only university in the entire nation to earn such a prestigious honor.

The university also is investing in improvements to athletics facilities, including Rutgers Stadium. Championship programs in recent years include football (five consecutive bowl wins); women?s basketball (2007 Final Four); and wrestling (eight wrestlers qualified for the 2011 NCAA Championships).

COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Rutgers Future Scholars: In 2007, President McCormick launched this program to help disadvantaged students in the university?s host communities ? Camden, Newark, New Brunswick and Piscataway. Rutgers works with school districts to identify top eighth-graders. As the students proceed through high school, the university provides support and mentoring ? including workshops on preparing for college. This summer, the program will reach its full enrollment of 1,000 pre-college students ? each holding the promise of a free Rutgers education if they earn admission.

Branding Rutgers: Since 2004, Rutgers has adopted a series of reforms to address the university?s perennial identity problems. These reforms include a new universitywide system of logos and graphic marks, advertising that promotes Rutgers? accomplishments, and the growing popularity of the university?s tagline, ?Jersey Roots, Global Reach.?

Rutgers Day: Since launching in 2009, this annual community event has attracted 200,000 visitors to the university to enjoy hundreds of free programs appealing to every age and interest.

Web Innovations: In 2009, the university completed a major overhaul of the Rutgers website, including the launch of Rutgers Today, the university?s award-winning, web-based news center.

HISTORIC RESULTS

Record Applications: In 2010, Rutgers received a record number of applications from prospective first-year and transfer students ? 44,800. That is a nearly 14-percent increase compared to 2002.

Record Enrollment: Rutgers welcomed nearly 7,500 first-year students in fall 2011 ? the largest new class in the university?s history. Enrollment has grown from 51,480 students in 2002 to more than 58,000 this fall.?
