The Perfect Punch - Breaking Through Limits | Content for Reprint

Limits, by and large are self-imposed. Some limits of course are not, like genetic factors, for instance. We have two arms, two legs and we are limited by what two arms and two legs can do.

But there are other kinds of limitations, which are self-imposed - holding back in a fight, for example - and that, like most self-imposed limitations, can be self-defeating. The point is, unlike having only two arms and two legs, self-imposed limits are of our own doing and if we "do" them then we can "un-do" them.

That much is obvious, but it is not quite that simple: just because a limit is self-imposed and just because we can undo it does not mean it is easy to shift. It took Boddhidharma nine years to do that!

The great monk Boddhidharma who taught the Buddhist Monks at the Shaolin Temple how to build up their strength and defend themselves, sat facing a wall for nine years!

There is a tendency to translate this literally, that he never moved and sat in meditation posture continuously for nine years, but apart from the fact that that would be physically impossible, it misses the point.

The Boddhidharma story is a teaching story and the cusp of it is that the great monk faced a great obstacle, which stood in the way of his enlightenment. It took him nine years to break through this "wall" which represented his self-imposed limits.

So let's not underestimate our self-imposed limits. They took a life-time set up, they are deeply embedded in every tissue of the body and they won't take kindly to being pushed aside - even for enlightenment!

It is interesting to note that the teaching story uses the term "wall". Walls tend to be immovable. If you butt your head against one, chances are your head will come off second best. And that is what a self-imposed obstacle is: immovable - unless you are willing to meditate continuously on it for nine years!

And that's not going to be too easy, especially if you have to earn a living at the same time! There has to be a better way, and there is?

Let's take a simple punch, the very simplest punch you can think of. You will be doing it wrong. Don't argue with me on this. Unless you are a child prodigy, or a child virtuoso, you will not be doing it right. If you are not a child, but an adult, you will definitely be doing it wrong because by the time you reach even young adulthood you will have all sorts of self-imposed limitations, both mental and physical, in operation. These will interfere with your punch, even if your teacher is telling you you are doing it right!

Now there are a number of things you should know about self-imposed limitations. First of all, you don't even know what they are. Chances are they were put in place in your formative years and you have lived with them ever since early childhood and they are so much a part of your life that you accept them as "normal" or "natural" and never question them.

Which poses a real problem: how do we get rid of these limitations if we don't even know what they are?

OK. Here is the method, and...please note that it is a very simple method, but no less effective for that. Do not underestimate it: it is powerful!

OK, so let's work with that punch you are working on. Step number one is, try to get it as right as you can. Get it to the point where your teacher is telling you it is right. It won't be, but you must get it to at least that point.

Step number two, practise it until you can do it more or less automatically, that is, with a minimum of fuss and bother.

Step number three, and this is the crucial step?set aside some time, a long period of time, when you are unlikely to be disturbed by outside sources and then do that punch over and over and over, thousands and thousands of times, non-stop. This is it. This is the secret ingredient. Let's take a close look at it?

But first, let's back up for a moment?

If you practice this move ONLY a few hundred times, then it's the same old, same old. Nothing changes. All your self-imposed limitations and blocks are in place but you don't see them as such and in fact you are not even aware of them, but they are interfering with the efficient delivery of your punch.

Now understand this: it takes effort to maintain these blocks and limitations. They are self-imposed, it is true, but that means they are self-maintained - which means effort!

In other words, your blocks and limitations stifle your technique in two ways: one, it will mean you are using some part of your body incorrectly, which interferes with the delivery of the punch and two, it takes effort to maintain the blocks and limitations and that means less energy is left over to put into your punch.

Now, back to the "secret" technique? if you practice your punch mercilessly, hour after hour, thousands and thousands of times, non-stop, something will happen.

What?

Let's keep it simple: you, and your arms in particular, will get tired. Which means you will have less and less energy to expend on this exercise - until you get to the point where you have only enough energy to do the punch. And no more!

This is the crucial bit. Read that last sentence again. "You will have only enough energy for the punch and no more!" At this point you have no extra energy to keep "doing" your blocks and resistances and limitations and, temporarily, until you regain your energy later, your blocks and limitations and resistances, not to mention your fears and doubts, will drop away.

At this point you will be doing only the punch. No more. And no less. You will now be doing the punch as perfectly as is possible for your body, because there is nothing left over for all that other stuff that interferes with your punch.

But wait! There is one more step: awareness.

You MUST take special note of how this new-found punch FEELS. If you don't, then tomorrow you will be back to your old habits, and you will have gained nothing.

So take note of how the new punch feels, how your body feels, how you breathe, your state of mind and yes, tomorrow you will be back to your old habits, but you will REMEMBER. You will now understand your self-imposed limitations and you will whittle away at them mercilessly and ceaselessly - until you can reproduce that perfect punch every time!

Addendum: let me draw a parallel. I am a salesman and sometimes I have a "bad" day. So bad that I cannot even give the product away; so bad that most salespeople would quit. But I keep going.

And it gets harder and harder to keep going. And I get tireder and tireder and it becomes more and more difficult to do all those things that a salesman is "supposed" to do?you know: smile, act enthusiastic and so on. And indeed after a certain amount of time I don't smile anymore, and I don't act enthusiastic anymore and I make a sale!

Go figure!

You see, what I'm saying is that as a salesman I often do a lot of things that are not really necessary. They "feel" right (like smiling or acting enthusiastic) and so I keep doing them, but they are not essential for a sale.

Likewise when practising your punch: you will find that you do a lot more than you need to, and this is not only a waste of energy, but it is often counterproductive.

Dom CapersAP

A year ago, Packers defensive coaches spent the offseason talking about tackling.

This year, they have a new emphasis, and it?s changing the way practice looks.

Unhappy with the number of fumbles they?re creating, the Packers are treating every ball in OTAs as if it?s a live ball, diving on dropped passes and swarming to the ball.

?You see us going to the ball with a little more intensity, you see everybody poking at the ball, trying to get the ball out,? defensive coordinator Dom Capers said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com. ?We?re just trying to get them conditioned mentally. You see us every time the ball is on the ground, you see someone scooping it. We?re treating it like it?s [a live ball] just to condition everybody to get to that ball, scoop the ball and to try to get the mentality of taking the ball away.

?In four years, we?re No. 1 in interceptions but we aren?t close in caused and recovered fumbles.?

Since 2006 when coach Mike McCarthy took over, the Packers have recovered 55 fumbles, tied with the Jaguars for fewest in the league over that span. The Bears (who employed the same aggressive practice habits under coach Lovie Smith) had 107, nearly double their division rivals.

Of course, forced fumbles are often a creation of pass-rush, and the unusual part is the Packers have been good there, ranking 11th or better in the league in sacks three of the last four years. But they forced just eight fumbles last year (recovering just four), and they?re determined to change it.

?You would think with our style of play ? we moved back into the top five in sacks ? you?d think that as many shots as we get on quarterbacks, we?d get the ball out. And we?re trying,? Capers said. ?I?ll say this: Throughout my career, and even here, when we?ve put an emphasis on something, when we?ve said, ?All right guys, this is a point of emphasis,? we?ve improved.?

Taking Charles Woodson out of the back of the secondary won?t help that goal, but they?re hoping the extra work in practice puts it in the front of players? minds, and it becomes a habit in the fall.

Germany's uncomfortable role as Europe's 'economic police'

Since World War II, Germany has preferred to stay out of international leadership roles. But the eurocrisis has put the country at Europe's head ? with all the criticism that entails.

Germans in the postwar era, on the other hand, have preferred to blend into the background.

But amid Europe's sovereign debt crisis, as Germany's healthy economy has put it at the head of the 27-member European Union, that's been proving impossible. And now Germans are dealing with the criticism that accompanies being a regional ? if unwilling ? hegemon.

While a recent Pew poll shows Germany to be considered by many countries to be the most trustworthy nation in Europe, it has also accrued new enemies far and wide, with Greeks burning German flags or picketing with signs of German Chancellor Angela Merkel dressed in Nazi uniform. There have even been?claims from France that Germans are out to rule the Continent.

?We have made a lot of commitment to help those people,? says Markus, a musical theater stage producer, in Berlin?s Alexanderplatz, a public square and major transportation hub in Germany?s capital Berlin. ?It?s really unfair.?

It?s also untrue ? at least the part about Germany wanting continental dominion, say German and European observers. Instead, the avoidance of tough positions in foreign policy, so Germany is not led into a moral dilemma, is ingrained in the postwar mentality, they say.

?There is no appetite for domination. Germany has been pushed into this position by default,? says Jan Techau, director of Carnegie Europe in Brussels for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. ?There is no ambition to shape the continent in the image of Germany.?

?Germans want to be liked by the rest of the world,? says Michael Wohlgemuth, director of Open Europe Berlin. ?Germany feels uneasy in its new powerful role. We don?t want to be leaders of Europe.?

Outside the US embassy in Berlin, Erkan Arikan says that Germany is being unfairly maligned in Europe. But he says he can also laugh it off, as a German of Turkish descent in a multicultural Germany that has nothing to do with the 1930s.

He says that he can see some parallels between the hegemonic positions of Germany and the US today, but there is a limit. ?The US is still the world police for everyone; Germany doesn?t want to be the focus,? he says. ?But maybe it?s becoming the economic police of Europe.?

It?s a role that many Germans might feel uncomfortable playing, especially with the bad will that can breed.

If Americans don?t like the term ?ugly American,? Germans like it even less.

Ulrike Gu?rot of the European Council of Foreign Relations says when she travels around the country and talks to everyday Germans, they are starting to ask, ?Are we responsible for this youth unemployment in Spain? There is an uneasiness they they are just starting to feel,? she says. ?They don?t want to be the ?ugly German.??

Myanmar Muslims find shelter in Buddhist monastery

LASHIO, Myanmar (AP) ? More than 1,000 Muslims who fled Myanmar's latest bout of sectarian violence huddled in a Buddhist monastery guarded by army soldiers as calm returned to this northeastern city, though burnt out buildings leveled by Buddhist rioters still smoldered.

The army transported terrified Muslim families by the truckload out of a neighborhood in Lashio where overturned cars and motorcycles that had been charred a day earlier left black scars on the red earth.

"We heard things could get worse, so we waved down soldiers and asked them for help," said 59-year-old Khin Than, who arrived at the monastery Thursday morning with her four children and sacks of luggage along with several hundred other Muslims. "We left because we're afraid of being attacked."

The violence in Lashio this week shows how anti-Muslim unrest has slowly spread across Myanmar since starting last year in western Rakhine state and hitting the central city of Meikhtila in March. President Thein Sein's government, which inherited power from the military two years ago, has been heavily criticized for failing to contain the violence.

In Lashio on Thursday, Buddhist monks organized meals for the newly arrived refugees, who huddled together in several buildings in the monastery compound.

Although a few Buddhist men could still be seen Thursday riding motorbikes with crude weapons such as sharpened bamboo poles, no new violence was reported. Several banks and shops reopened as residents emerged to look at destroyed Muslim shops. Trucks of soldiers and police crisscrossed main roads. They guarded the ruins of Muslim businesses that were reduced to ashes on Tuesday and Wednesday, erecting roadblocks from twisted debris.

At one corner, where the charred remains of a three-story building still smoldered, Muslim residents sorted through rubble for anything salvageable. One family packed electronics from their shop into the back of a truck.

A woman who had fled a mob a day earlier was still in a state of shock.

"These things should not happen," said the woman, Aye Tin, a Muslim resident who slept overnight in a Red Cross compound. "Most Muslims are staying off the streets. They're afraid they'll be attacked or killed if they go outside."

The rioting began Tuesday after a Muslim man splashed gasoline on a Buddhist woman and set her on fire. Buddhist mobs responded by burning down several Muslim-owned shops, a mosque and an Islamic orphanage. Roving motorcyclists continued the violence on Wednesday, leaving one person dead and four injured.

Presidential spokesman Ye Htut said 25 people had been detained so far. He said all those arrested were from Lashio.

The violence is casting fresh doubt over whether Thein Sein's government can or will act to contain the racial and religious intolerance plaguing a deeply fractured nation still struggling to emerge from half a century of military rule. Muslims, who account for about 4 percent of Myanmar's roughly 60 million people, have been the main victims of the violence since it began last year, but so far most criminal trials have involved prosecutions of Muslims, not members of the Buddhist majority.

New sensor 1,000 times more sensitive than current camera sensors

Cameras fitted with a new revolutionary sensor will soon be able to take clear and sharp photos in dim conditions, thanks to a new image sensor invented at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The new sensor made from graphene, is believed to be the first to be able to detect broad spectrum light, from the visible to mid-infrared, with high photoresponse or sensitivity. This means it is suitable for use in all types of cameras, including infrared cameras, traffic speed cameras, satellite imaging and more.

Not only is the graphene sensor 1,000 times more sensitive to light than current imaging sensors found in today's cameras, it also uses 10 times less energy as it operates at lower voltages. When mass produced, graphene sensors are estimated to cost at least five times cheaper.

Graphene is a million times smaller than the thickest human hair (only one-atom thick) and is made of pure carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure. It is known to have a high electrical conductivity among other properties such as durability and flexibility.

The inventor of the graphene sensor, Assistant Professor Wang Qijie, from NTU's School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, said it is believed to be the first time that a broad-spectrum, high photosensitive sensor has been developed using pure graphene.

His breakthrough, made by fabricating a graphene sheet into novel nano structures, was published this month in Nature Communications, a highly-rated research journal.

"We have shown that it is now possible to create cheap, sensitive and flexible photo sensors from graphene alone. We expect our innovation will have great impact not only on the consumer imaging industry, but also in satellite imaging and communication industries, as well as the mid-infrared applications," said Asst Prof Wang, who also holds a joint appointment in NTU's School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

"While designing this sensor, we have kept current manufacturing practices in mind. This means the industry can in principle continue producing camera sensors using the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) process, which is the prevailing technology used by the majority of factories in the electronics industry. Therefore manufacturers can easily replace the current base material of photo sensors with our new nano-structured graphene material."

If adopted by industry, Asst Prof Wang expects that cost of manufacturing imaging sensors to fall - eventually leading to cheaper cameras with longer battery life.

How the Graphene nanostructure works

Asst Prof Wang came up with an innovative idea to create nanostructures on graphene which will "trap" light-generated electron particles for a much longer time, resulting in a much stronger electric signal. Such electric signals can then be processed into an image, such as a photograph captured by a digital camera.

The "trapped electrons" is the key to achieving high photoresponse in graphene, which makes it far more effective than the normal CMOS or CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensors, said Asst Prof Wang. Essentially, the stronger the electric signals generated, the clearer and sharper the photos.

"The performance of our graphene sensor can be further improved, such as the response speed, through nanostructure engineering of graphene, and preliminary results already verified the feasibility of our concept," Asst Prof Wang added.

This research, costing about $200,000, is funded by the Nanyang Assistant Professorship start-up grant and supported partially by the Ministry of Education Tier 2 and 3 research grants.

Development of this sensor took Asst Prof Wang a total of 2 years to complete. His team consisted of two research fellows, Dr Zhang Yongzhe and Dr Li Xiaohui, and four doctoral students Liu Tao, Meng Bo, Liang Guozhen and Hu Xiaonan, from EEE, NTU. Two undergraduate students were also involved in this ground-breaking work.

Asst Prof Wang has filed a patent through NTU's Nanyang Innovation and Enterprise Office for his invention.

The next step is to work with industry collaborators to develop the graphene sensor into a commercial product.

Syria says Assad will remain president until 2014

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's foreign minister laid out a hard line Wednesday, saying Bashar Assad will remain president at least until elections in 2014 and might seek another term, conditions that will make it difficult for the opposition to agree to U.N.-sponsored talks on ending the civil war.

Any deal reached in such talks would have to be put to a referendum, Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem added in a TV interview, introducing a new condition that could complicate efforts by the U.S. and Russia to bring both sides together at an international conference in Geneva, possibly next month.

Drawing a tough line of its own, the main exile-based political group, the Syrian National Coalition, reiterated that any negotiations require "the head of the regime, security and military leadership to step down and be excluded from the political process."

While the Assad regime has agreed in principle to attend peace talks, the opposition has not, insisting it first get international guarantees on the agenda and timetable. The coalition has been meeting for the past week in Turkey but spent most of that time arguing about membership issues, rather than making a decision about Geneva.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday that while Russia and the United States have asked him to convene a meeting as soon as possible, "there are still many elements that we have to clear." He said there is still no agreement on a date, on who will participate, and on the membership of a united opposition delegation.

In his wide-ranging comments, al-Moallem, an Assad stalwart with decades in top positions, reflected a new confidence by the government. The regime had seemed near collapse during a rebel offensive last summer but has scored a number of battlefield successes in recent weeks.

"Our armed forces have regained the momentum," he told the Lebanese station Al-Mayadeen, suggesting that the regime is digging in. Asked when the civil war might end, he said: "That depends on when the patience of those conspiring against Syria will run out."

The uprising against Assad began in March 2011, turned into an armed insurgency in response to a harsh regime crackdown, and escalated into a civil war. The fighting has killed more than 70,000 people, uprooted more than 5 million and devastated large areas of the country.

The conflict has taken on strong sectarian overtones ? most of the armed rebels are Sunni Muslims, a majority in Syria, while Assad has retained core support among the country's minorities, including his own Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, along with Christians and Shiite Muslims.

Both the regime and the opposition still bet on a military victory but are being pressured by their backers to attend the Geneva talks, the international community's only plan at the moment for trying to end the war.

Chances of success seem slim, with a host of issues remaining open, including a detailed agenda, the list of participants and a mechanism for implementing any possible agreement.

Al-Moallem introduced what appeared to be a new Syrian condition Wednesday, saying that "anything agreed on in Geneva will be held to a referendum in Syria."

"If it wins the support of the Syrian people, we will go ahead with it," he added.

He said Assad will remain in his post at least until scheduled elections in 2014.

"From now until the next elections, President Bashar Assad is president of the Syrian Arab Republic," he said. "Will Assad run in 2014 or not? This depends on the circumstances in 2014 and on the popular will. If the people want him to run, he will run. If the people don't want that, I don't think he will. Let us not jump the gun."

The West, including the United States, has repeatedly called for Assad to step down. Al-Moallem said that "Americans have no business in deciding who will run Syria," adding that this "would be a precedent in international relations that we must not allow."

Al-Moallem also delivered the regime's most serious warning to Israel since the start of the conflict, saying Syria "will retaliate immediately" if Israel strikes Syrian soil again. Earlier this month, Israeli warplanes struck near the capital of Damascus, targeting purported Iranian missiles intended for Assad ally Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia. Syria did not respond at the time.

Israel, though not officially acknowledging it was behind the strikes, has hinted it could strike again if more weapons are shipped. In another warning, Israel's defense chief said Tuesday a Russian plan to supply sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Syria is a threat and signaled that Israel is prepared to use force to stop the delivery.

Russia has said it remains committed to the deal, despite U.S. and Israeli objections.

Al-Moallem said he did not know if the missiles have reached Syria yet, but noted that they are defensive weapons. "The people who are not planning to attack Syria are not scared of these missiles," he said. "Those who fear them are those who intend to attack Syria."

While the regime was portraying itself as willing to negotiate a peace deal, the political opposition seemed in disarray at its marathon talks in Istanbul that began last week and were to continue Thursday.

On Wednesday, exasperated grass roots activists in Syria threatened to cut ties with the Syrian National Coalition if it doesn't end the internal wrangling and come up with a political strategy. Syria's main opposition group has long been accused of being out of touch with those on the ground in Syria.

It was not clear if and when the opposition would make a decision on whether to attend the Geneva talks. In a statement late Wednesday, it demanded among other things that Hezbollah fighters and Iranian advisers be expelled from Syria, but it was not clear if these were conditions for attending the talks.

Hezbollah has been fighting alongside regime troops, and the militia's growing role has been highlighted since the May 19 start of an offensive against the rebel-held western Syrian town of Qusair. Pro-Assad forces have gained ground in Qusair, though rebels have been able to hang on to some of their positions.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Hezbollah's growing involvement marks a dangerous escalation. "We demand that Hezbollah withdraw its fighters from Syria immediately," she said.

Asked if Iran should be invited to the Geneva conference, she said the final decision would have to be made together with other international partners and the United Nations.

"That decision has not yet been made," she said.

"But let me say and take this opportunity to say that Iran has not played a constructive role in regard to Syria. They have sent weapons. They have sent money. They have provided fighters. They have financed Hezbollah. And we have no reason to believe that Iran wants a peaceful transition."

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said there are concerns an Iranian presence would be counterproductive, and that Tehran would try to leverage the Syria crisis to win international acquiescence in its suspected nuclear weapons program.

On Wednesday, the U.N. Human Rights Council called for an urgent investigation into alleged abuses by regime troops and Hezbollah fighters in Qusair. The resolution, backed by the U.S., Turkey and Qatar, also condemned the presence of foreign fighters supporting Assad.

Ban said in a statement that "Syria is disintegrating before our eyes," and that radicalism fed by chaos "increasingly threatens regional security."

In Geneva, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Syria's civil war "reflects a colossal failure to protect civilians."

Rounded stones on Mars evidence of flowing water

May 30, 2013 ? Observations by NASA's Mars rover Curiosity have revealed areas with gravel and pebbles that are characteristic of a former riverbed. Researchers, including members of the Niels Bohr Institute, have analysed their shapes and sizes and the rounded pebbles clearly show that there has been flowing water on Mars. The results are published in the scientific journal, Science.

The Mars rover's stereo camera took pictures of a few areas with densely packed pebbles, cemented together like concrete. The image field of an area named Hottah was a mosaic of approximately 1.4 meters x 80 centimeters. But when the picture is taken at an angle from the camera arm's two meter high mast down towards the ground-level, it gives a slightly distorted view in which the size of the rocks depend on their location in the image frame. To remedy this, the researcher first had to process the image so the proportions are comparable.

"Next, we divided the image into smaller fields of 10 mm and analysed the gravel, which consists of coarse grains of sand around 1/3 mm. We examined the pebbles which are between 4 and 40 mm in greater detail. Altogether we made a thorough analysis of 515 pebbles," explains Asmus Koefoed, a research assistant in the Mars Group at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen.

Smooth, rounded stones

When rocks are worn by the wind, they become angular and rough -- similar to the result of sandblasting. When rocks are moving in flowing water, they are worn down in a completely different way. They tumble around in a mixture of water and sand bumping into each other and the corners and edges of the rocks eventually become smooth and rounded.

"We could see that almost all of the 515 pebbles we analysed were worn flat, smooth and round. We have classified them according to their geometry, which can be described using a single number -- the 'Corey shape factor', where 0 describes rocks that are completely flat like a piece of paper and 1 means they are perfect spheres," explains Asmus Koefoed.

There are both light and dark rocks in various shades and colours -- much like the original rocks on Earth and Mars. Densely packed deposits were formed locally, which occur when fine sand and mud flow along with the gravel and pebbles. This all clumps together into something that can harden into a concrete-like substance, a conglomerate. The solid sediments have then subsequently been worn flat on the top by wind-borne sand particles that flowed past the conglomerate during events of very strong wind.

Current like a Danish stream

The new results are interesting because they tell us about the climate history of Mars. What would it take to cause the stones to look like they do?

"In order to have moved and formed these rounded pebbles, there must have been flowing water with a depth of between 10 cm and 1 meter and a flow rate of about 1 meter per second -- or 3.6 km/h -- slightly faster than a typical natural Danish stream," explains Morten Bo Madsen, head of the Mars research group at the Niels Bohr Institute.

So it has not just been sporadic flowing water that evaporates quickly, but prolonged warmer periods where the streams were active. There was probably a higher atmospheric pressure on the planet than today, where the pressure is below about 1000 Pascal, about one percent of the Earth's atmospheric pressure. This means that the planet must have had a denser atmosphere, which caused a greater surface pressure than today.

Until now, it was believed that the warm period on mars was as far back as 3.5-3.7 billion years ago, but with the new studies it is now believed that this period may have extended to only 2-3 billion years ago.

Mars has thus been a dynamic place, which would not have been totally inhospitable to life, as we know it on Earth. Apart from running water recent investigations with Curiosity have shown that there were a pH-neutral environment and minerals that microbial life could use for nourishment.

Curiosity has thus achieved one of its objectives, namely to investigate whether there are areas on Mars, which could have been habitable for microbial life.

Amnesty denounces Egypt's civil society bill

CAIRO (AP) ? An International rights group is denouncing Egypt's presidency's decision to move ahead with a disputed bill feared to stifle non-governmental organizations, despite assurances by the president that it will not put "restraints" on civil society.

Amnesty International warned in a statement Wednesday that the bill, if passed by the country's defacto parliament, would be "a death blow" to civil society. They say it gives authorities "wide ranging powers" over the registration, activities and funding of NGOs through a newly formed body in which state security agencies will be represented.

The group expressed its fears just as President Mohammed Morsi said on Wednesday that the state would support NGOs but that it had a role to protect society from "foreign dangers."

PFT: Remembering Tillman on Memorial Day

QuickGetty Images

One drew comparisons to Terrell Owens.? The other had a ?miserable? rookie season.? Both will be counted upon to justify their draft status.

Joe Lyons of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch takes a look at receiver Brian Quick and running back Isaiah Pead.? Both arrived via round two in 2012.? Neither has actually arrived.

Quick finished his rookie season with 11 receptions, Pead with 10 rushes.? The latter landed at No. 3 on the depth chart, thanks to missing offseason workouts due to the outdated rule prohibiting participation until a school?s exams have concluded.

?The crazy thing was, I wasn?t even in school at the time,?? Pead said.? ?So I was just sitting around.

?I had a playbook, but I couldn?t explain it to myself. I missed all but a week of [offseason practices] last year, so this year, I just feel like I?m that much farther along.??

And so, for now, Pead?s not miserable.

?New year, new season.? That?s the way I look at it,?? Pead said.? ?The second year, it?s completely different because you have a better idea of what to expect and you have a better idea of what?s expected of you.

?Last year obviously didn?t go the way I wanted, but I survived it and I?m ready to move forward.??

Quick basically said the same thing.

?Last year, for me, was a learning year, and that?s something I?m looking to build on,?? Quick said.? ?It?s a big step, coming to the NFL because everything at this level, physically and mentally, is so much faster.? You have to adjust, but you can?t force it.

?But now, after that first year, I really feel like I have a better feel for the offense and my role here.? I?m ready to take my game to the next level.??

Pead has a better chance to make an impact, given that Steven Jackson is gone and the Rams didn?t replace him with a veteran.

?We?re all competitors and we?re all looking to be No. 1,?? Pead said.? ?But it?s not like we?re enemies.? We?re truly a unit, trying to do everything we can to make sure that we?re all getting better, as individuals and as a group.??

For Quick, having rookies Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey around could cut into the total opportunities, but it also could make it easier for Quick to get open since the much-hyped youngsters will be getting more attention.

Regardless, the team that was viewed as having a great draft in 2012 needs a strong contribution from a pair of second-round picks who haven?t contributed much so far.

PolitiFact Florida rates Gov. Rick Scott?s claim on ?700,000 jobs? promise

To hear Gov. Rick Scott tell it, his memorable campaign pledge to create 700,000 jobs in seven years is going right along on schedule.

The novice politician, almost two and a half years into his first term, says things are looking bright for the Sunshine State as a result of investments in economic development and public education.

"Our unemployment rate has now dropped to 7.2 percent, well below the national average, and we are already almost halfway to our 2010 goal of creating 700,000 new jobs in seven years," Scott wrote in a letter explaining line-item vetoes in the 2013-14 state budget.

As much as we love belting Bon Jovi anthems ? WHOAAAAA, we?re halfway there! ? it?s premature to sing Scott?s praises for fulfilling half of the jobs he promised in the centerpiece of his 2010 campaign.

Our qualm with this claim comes down to details about his pledge that he has since abandoned. These details that may not fit in a zippy campaign ad, but they do come straight from Scott?s mouth.

The promise at hand is rated Stalled on the Scott-O-Meter despite the state adding 302,500 net jobs since December 2010. This factors in Scott?s first month in office, January 2011. Excluding that month puts the jobs total at 285,100. The size of the state?s employment pool in April 2013 is about the same as it was in July 2004, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Why is it Stalled? Because Scott told us in a debate and in press accounts that his 700,000 jobs would come on top of Florida?s normal growth as it added jobs lost during the recession. State economists expected the state to add about 1 million jobs by 2017.

"It?s on top of that," he told a reporter in 2010. "If you do these things, we?re going to grow 700,000 more jobs."

So Scott needs about 1.4 million more jobs by 2017 to fulfill his original promise of 1.7 million jobs. Through 28 months in office, the state has added less than 20 percent of the jobs he needs to meet that mark.

Scott?s press office has consistently disagreed with our analysis, saying Scott?s campaign materials never qualified that 700,000 jobs would be on top of normal growth projections.

In a response to our inquiry about this claim, spokeswoman Jackie Schutz asked us to note the state?s unemployment rate of 7.2 percent is below the national average of 7.5 percent for the second straight month.

That, for the record, is correct.

Our ruling

Scott said the state is "already almost halfway to our 2010 goal of creating 700,000 new jobs in seven years."

By his preferred measure since taking office ? 700,000 jobs regardless of normal growth ? he?s in the ballpark.

By the measure he asked Floridians to hold him accountable to ? 700,000 jobs on top of 1 million jobs in normal growth ? he still has quite a long ways to go.

We rate his claim Mostly False.

Geared Titan Aluminum Gaming Surface

Gaming surfaces seek to give users a competitive edge by providing greater control, smoother movement, higher accuracy, or greater range of motion. Simply put, the purpose of a gaming surface is to make your mousing better?however you define that. The Geared Titan Aluminum Gaming Surface looks to balance smooth motion, tight control, and freedom of movement with one additional element?stability.

Design
Constructed of a 0.05-inch thick aluminum plate, the Geared Titan is rigid and stable, making it ideal for not only desktop use, but also for those set-ups that might put you on the couch or other circumstances where a flat, level tabletop isn't available.

The aluminum is anodized for both durability and looks. Our review unit came in bright blue (Galactic Blue), but is also available in Crimson Red or Flat Black. Rounded corners and edges prevent any accidents with sharp points, and the anodized aluminum stays cool to the touch. The Titan offers a broad mousing surface measuring 10 by 12 inches.

The aluminum surface is backed with a layer of foam-rubber with a grippy diamond tread imprint for traction. The patterned imprint of the pad will provide a good grip on any number of surfaces, especially those that aren't quite level or even. When used on a hard surface, like a desk or table, the foam-rubber base also allows some give in an otherwise rigid surface.

The surface is smooth, but not slick. Like the Razer Ironclad, the texture offers a bit of traction?for some, the surface won't offer enough ease of movement, but for others, the traction allows a more comfortable level of control. Others may prefer a cloth-covered mousepad, like the Razer Goliathus, for smooth gliding. One of our interns briefly used the Titan and felt it didn't offer smooth enough motion for his preferences, yet after a week of use, I had no similar issues. As with all things that tactile, preferences will vary, so try before you buy if you can.

Performance
We received the Titan included with the Steiger Dynamics LEET reference, and it was bundled in for one specific reason that's worth mentioning?it's an excellent surface for use on the couch.

I tested the Titan in a few sessions of Team Fortress 2, where it gave me no problems. The smooth surface let my mouse glide easily, but offered enough traction that I was always in control of my mouse. The smooth blue surface never caused any issues with my mouse, and the stability of the surface was noticeable.

Compared to other gaming mousepads the Geared Titan Aluminum Gaming Surface is an excellent option among many. It offers the stability of the Roccat Hiro 3D Supremacy Surface with the all-metal design of the Razer Ironclad, while being less expensive and more colorful than either. While not everyone will see the utility in using a metal plate for a gaming mouse pad, the benefits are real, especially for the frustrated gamer trying to use a mouse on the couch. For that specific use case, it goes from being an alright product to a must-own.

(AP) ? A Utah woman gave birth to a healthy set of quintuplets over the weekend with help from a team of eight doctors, one anesthesiologist and dozens of nurses ensuring the mother and the tiny babies survived.

Guillermina and Fernando Garcia's five babies ? three girls and two boys ? weigh between 2 and 3 pounds each and are expected to stay at the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City for another six weeks. Doctors predict they will grow up completely healthy.

Guillermina Garcia, 34, carried the babies until 31 ? weeks ? seven weeks shorter than most single-birth pregnancies but about three weeks longer than most quintuplet mothers. The extra time in the womb helped the babies' lungs develop more than other quintuplets, said Dr. Elizabeth O'Brien, of the newborn intensive care unit.

"They are all doing remarkably well," O'Brien said.

It was the first set of quintuplets ever born at the hospital. Fewer than 10 quintuplet sets are born each year in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counted 37 babies who were born as part of a set of five or more in 2010.

"We feel like we're dreaming," said Fernando Garcia in Spanish at a Tuesday afternoon news conference. "It's incredible that we have five."

The Utah couple used fertility drugs, which increases the odds of a woman having multiple births. They found out early in the pregnancy they were having quintuplets, and Guillermina Garcia had been in the hospital on bed rest since early April.

All five babies were born by cesarean section ? coming out within two minutes. A team of five, including one doctor and two nurses, was waiting for each baby. Their names are Esmeralda, Fatima, Marissa, Fernando and Jordan.

"I was excited to see them and see that they were OK, that everything turned out normally," she said in Spanish.

The largest is baby Fernando, who weighed 3 pounds, 14 ounces. The two baby boys are still using breathing tubes, while the girls are breathing on their own.

Dr. Tracy Manuck served as Guillermina Garcia's doctor at the hospital and called the mother an extraordinary person who never complained, despite suffering from high blood pressure and other medical problems during the pregnancy. The doctors also complimented her husband's support throughout the pregnancy ? including in the operating room Sunday morning.

Though the hospital had never had quintuplets before, they've had many women give birth to triplets and quadruplets and drew on those experiences to help them Sunday, Manuck said.

The beaming couple, originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, now begins a future sure to be filled with droves of dirty diapers, endless hours of trying to calm crying babies and enough bottles and binkies to fill a sink. They also have a 1-year-old girl, Julietta.

They said they have family who live in the area who will help them. Fernando Garcia's bosses have told him to take as much time off as he needs from his work as a welder at a local factory. The family has health insurance, and the Utah Doula Association has setup an account where people can donate to help with the costs of having five babies.

When asked how she plans to care for all five babies, Guillermina Garcia shrugged her shoulders, laughed and said simply: "I don't know."

Her husband smiled and gave a more confident answer: "Now that they're here, we'll find a way," he said. "We're through the hardest part."

(AP) ? Sen. John McCain, a proponent of arming Syrian rebels, quietly slipped into Syria for a meeting with anti-government fighters Monday.

Spokeswoman Rachael Dean confirms the Arizona Republican made the visit. She declined further comment about the trip.

The visit took place amid meetings in Paris involving efforts to secure participation of Syria's fractured opposition in an international peace conference in Geneva.

And in Brussels, the European Union decided late Monday to lift the arms embargo on the Syrian opposition while maintaining all other sanctions against Bashar Assad's regime after June 1, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said following the meeting.

Two years of violence in Syria has killed more than 70,000 people. President Barack Obama has demanded that Assad leave power, while Russia has stood by Syria, its closest ally in the Arab world.

McCain has been a fierce critic of Obama administration policy there while stopping short of backing U.S. ground troops in Syria, but he supports aggressive military steps against the Assad regime.

Gen. Salem Idris, chief of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army, accompanied McCain across the Turkey-Syria border. McCain met with leaders of the Free Syrian Army from across the country, who asked him for increased U.S. support, including heavy weapons, a no-fly zone and airstrikes on Syrian government and Hezbollah forces, according to The Daily Beast, which first reported the senator's unannounced visit.

The White House declined to comment late Monday.

A State Department official said the department was aware of McCain crossing into Syrian territory on Monday. Further questions were referred to McCain's office.

Last Tuesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to provide weapons to rebels in Syria, as well as military training to vetted rebel groups and sanctions against anyone who sells oil or transfers arms to the Assad regime. McCain is a member of the committee.

Excitement mounts in rural Florida church as mission team prepares to serve new congregation

May 28, 2013
By STAFF

DAY (FBW)?A casual contact by college friends on Facebook led to the beginning of the process of a Freeport, Bahamas, church becoming a Florida Baptist State Convention church at large.?

In June volunteers from Brewer Lake Baptist Church in Day will travel to the Caribbean to bolster the fledgling church.

Several months ago Becky Swain, whose husband, Matt Swain, is pastor of Brewer Lake Baptist, reconnected with Pensacola Christian College friend Nancy Seymour on Facebook.?

Seymour?s husband, Henry, a native of Freeport, had just started New Heights Christian Church.

?This church had no affiliation with a denomination. It was just a Christian leader with a heart to start a church in his hometown,? said Matt Swain.?

As the Swains and Seymours chatted about churches, Seymour began to ask questions of the more experienced Florida pastor.?

?At one point he asked me, ?What is a Southern Baptist church?? and I just sent him a link to the Baptist Faith and Message,? Swain recalled.

Seymour examined the document and concluded that he agreed with all its tenets. Swain put him in contact with Craig Culbreath, lead strategist with the Missional Support Group of the Florida Baptist Convention. The congregation, meeting now in a strip mall, petitioned to become an ?at large? Florida Baptist church.

?We unintentionally started a church!? Swain exclaimed.

The new church will get a healthy dose of Southern Baptist cooperation in June when two dozen volunteers from Brewer Lake Baptist arrive in the port city. The team of Floridians will include two doctors, three nurses, and three student nurses?about 20 percent of those who attend the rural congregation.

Two medical teams will offer healthy child screenings in two locations in Freeport during the morning hours while others work to repair the?

Seymour?s house. In the evenings, volunteers will lead Vacation Bible School. After Brewer Lake Baptist?s VBS June 10-14, all the materials will be shipped to New Heights Christian Church.?

The team from Brewer Lake?Baptist reflect the congregation, its pastor said. The oldest volunteer is 87 and the youngest, three. The 87-year-old lady was at first reluctant, Swain said. Although healthy, she feared what could happen so far from home.

?I told her she would be there with two doctors and three nurses. She?d get quicker care with the team in Freeport than she could at home in Day,? he said.

The Middle Florida Baptist Association church has not sent a team on mission in about 20 years. Back then, men went with Thad Hardin, a member of Salem Baptist Church in Taylor County, to build churches.?

Swain said the excitement level is ?ridiculous? among the congregation, and preparations are in high gear.

On May 19 Middle Florida?Director of Missions Mike Miller will lead in an all-day study of Dennis Nunn?s ?Every Believer a Witness,? and witness teams will be commissioned.

?Our church is so blessed,? Swain said. ?We get to see missions as more than building a building.?

Bite Stays Hot Despite Colder Weather

The cold weather over the weekend did not cool down the Walleye bite on Lake Erie or the inland lakes. Good numbers of fish were taken by anglers on the big lake, and also at Mosquito Creek Reservoir. And method did not seem to matter, either. Walleye were caught on diving lures and on nightcrawler harnesses.

Taking a closer look at Lake Erie, a check on the head boats out of Port Clinton finds good numbers of fish are being caught, as long as the weather cooperates. Mark Wolf at Fisherman?s Wharf in downtown Port Clinton reports that their boats have been catching Walleye drifting nightcrawler harnesses. Other Port Clinton head boat operators Shore-Nuf, Tibbels, and The Sassy Sal are providing similar reports. The head boats drift for their catch, but trollers in the Western Basin are also taking fish. They are pulling Shad Raps, spoons, and harnesses with success. They have been targeting the areas north of Kelleys Island and near Niagara Reef

In the Central Basin it is a similar story. Craig Lewis at Erie Outfitters tells us trollers are taking fish from Sheffield to Vermilion. Fish are running from 32 to 42 feet deep. Boats trolling Reef Runners and crawler harnesses in pink and purple are catching Walleye. Most of the trolling is being done off of planer boards.

Closer to Cleveland, the folks at Shine?s say trollers and drifters are catching Walleye off of Rocky River on harnesses and weight forward spinners tipped with nightcrawlers. Some breakwall casters are also picking up fish on diving cranks.

The Lake Erie bite comes just after the Walleye fishing started to pick up on inland lakes. It is still going strong there, too. Good Walleye catches are being made at Lake Milton, Mosquito Creek, Berlin, West Branch, and Pymatuning. Trolling crankbaits or nightcrawler harnesses will take fish. Plenty of limit catches were made at Mosquito this weekend. For Saugeye, try Tappan, Piedmont, Pleasant Hill and below Charles Mill Dam. Trolling Flicker Shads or drifting crawlers or minnows will trigger bites on the first three lakes, while fishing a minnow under a float will work below Charles Mill.

Let?s take a look around northern Ohio to see what else is biting:

Lake Erie

The Yellow Perch have started to cooperate. Weather conditions have not been consistently good, but when they are, Perch are being caught. Over on Cleveland?s east side, the folks at Wildwood Marina are running Perch trips on their head boat. Catches have been hit or miss, but the size of the fish has been good. Emerald Shiners fished on spreaders or Crappie rigs are preferred. On Sunday, fishermen on the Linda Mae, the headboat out of Wildwood caught more than 80 Yellow Perch and more than 160 White Perch. Fish are being caught in 33 to 35 feet of water from Euclid Hospital to Bratenahl.

In the Western Basin, the folks at Tibbels tell us anglers have been taking Yellow Perch near Kelleys Island on minnows and jigging spoons.

Smallmouth Bass have been hitting jerk baits and crankbaits in rocky areas near Cranberry and Ruggles Reef. The Smallmouth activity has really picked up in the past week.

Mosquito Creek Reservoir

Walleye have really turned on at this impoundment just north of Warren. Crankbaits, crawler harnesses, and jigs tipped with minnows seem to be triggering the most strikes. Causeway Sporting Goods tells us the east side of the lake by the cemetery has been producing. So has the area just north of there known as the ?Red Barn? area. Diving plugs like Flicker Shads and Shad Raps fished with weight or on lead core line have been especially effective. The fish are spread at different depths through the water column. Joe at the Mosquito State Park Marina tells us a lot of big Crappies are also hitting, too. Tube jigs, jigs tipped with minnows, or minnows below a float fished around brush in the shallows are producing fish. Walleye fishermen are also picking them as they troll crankbaits. Big Channel Catfish are being taken on nightcrawlers.

Portage Lakes

The Crappie bite is just about done in this popular chain of lakes just south of Akron. But, the panfish action is heating up. Jerry at Long Lake Bait and Tackle says the big Bluegills and Red Ears are on the nests. Maggots, waxworms, and red worms presented slowly on the bottom or under a bobber will catch fish. The emphasis is on ?slowly?. These fish are not interested in actively feeding, so baits fished at a relaxed pace in the beds will trigger reflex bites.

Ron Slater at Portage Lakes Bait and Tackle says Largemouth Bass are also very active. He suggests using four inch plastic worms in East Reservoir and Mud Lake. Bass are also being reported out of Turkeyfoot and Rex Lake.

Good catches of Channel Catfish are being made. Chicken Livers and nightcrawlers are the baits of choice. Long Lake, North Reservoir, and Turkeyfoot have been producing.

Nimisila Reservoir has been producing Crappie and Largemouth. Fishing brush and structure has been productive. Also, there have been scattered

reports of Walleye being caught at Nimisila, as well.

West Branch

Crappies are still hitting at West Branch. Alvin at Ron?s West Branch Bait says minnows are catching a lot of fish. They are also catching plenty of White Bass, too. Muskies are also being taken on large spinners cast near weed beds. A huge Muskie that weighed in at more than 20 pounds was caught last week. The Walleye bite has also picked up, especially for trollers dragging crankbaits and spinners tipped with crawlers. Fishing just outside the weed beds and on the drop-offs has been productive.

Berlin & Milton

Good catches of Walleye are being reported at these two lakes just west of Youngstown. Trollling nightcrawler harnesses and diving crankbaits have produced. Work the crawlers in shallower areas and on humps. Use the diving plugs for suspended fish in deeper water. Plenty of Smallmouth are also being caught at Milton. White Bass have also been cooperating with some very large fish being taken by trollers.

Charles Mill & Pleasant Hill

These two reservoirs near Mansfield and Ashland are good producers of spring Saugeye. Dusty at Mifflin Lakes Trading Post reports good numbers of Saugeye are being taken at Pleasant Hill. Areas in front of the beach and near the Mohican Lodge have been good for trollers and drifters fishing diving crankbaits and crawler rigs. Saugeye are hitting minnows below the dam at Charles Mill. Fish them on the bottom or under a float. Above the dam, Charles Mill is producing good catches of Wipers, which are Striped Bass-White Bass hybrids. Jigs and twister tails, as well as chicken livers are the preferred baits. The Crappie bite is still on there, too.

Pymatuning

The Walleye bite has picked up south of the causeway at this popular Ashtabula County reservoir. Anglers are trolling and drifting nightcrawlers to catch fish. Minnows are taking Crappie in the shallows. Channel Catfish are hitting shad and doughballs. Chicken livers will work for the Catfish, too.

Chippewa Lake

This popular lake south of Medina is open to the public, again. Panfish are being taken in good numbers. Largemouth Bass are also hitting. Bob Nemeth at Chippewa Lake Bait and Tackle reports an 8.5 pound Largemouth was caught recently. White Perch and Channel Catfish are also being caught.

Cleveland Metro Parks

Most of the Metro Parks lakes are producing nice Panfish catches. The Rocky River is also providing good results for Smallmouth Bass. Fishing jigs and plastics near structure are the key.

Ohio River

Jigging spoons are catching a lot of Sauger below the New Cumberland Dam in Columbiana County. Twister tails and other baits fished near the bottom are also taking fish. Limited numbers of Channel Cats are being caught, as well.

Mogadore

This is one of the top Panfish lakes in northeast Ohio, and it is producing, as usual. Good catches of Sunfish and Crappie are being made. Mogadore Bait and Tackle reports the big Red Ears are on the nests. Some Yellow Perch and Largemouth are also being taken.

Tuscarawas River

Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike are being caught in the stretch from Canal Fulton south to Dover. Crankbaits and jigs are catching both species.

Cuyahoga River

The Cuyahoga above Cuyahoga Falls is providing decent action for Bass and Northern Pike. Spinner baits, spoons, and crankbaits will catch fish.
