French journalist released by FARC says captors were respectful

Romeo Langlois, who was captured by FARC 33 days ago and released today, criticized the rebels for using his release as propaganda, but also empathized with their plight.

A French journalist freed by leftist rebels Wednesday said he had no complaints about his captivity other than its 33-day duration and lamented that Colombia's war is an "invisible conflict" where the poor kill the poor.

Romeo Langlois said he was not embittered, but he criticized the rebels for using his capture for propaganda purposes. They freed him on their movement's 48th anniversary on a specially built stage, hanging pro-peace banners in this remote southern hamlet and organizing a barbecue.

But the rebels and the roughly 2,000 people they convened for the handover to a humanitarian commission coordinated by the International Red Cross applauded vigorously when Langlois said he appreciated how the guerrillas "live in the mud and risk their lives."

"They never tied me up," Langlois, 35, said of his Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia captors. "Rather, they always treated me as a guest. They gave me good food ... They were always respectful."

Langlos looked relaxed and smiled, appearing unbothered by the wound to his left arm suffered during an April 28 attack by rebels on soldiers he was accompanying on a mission to destroy cocaine laboratories.

"I didn't need this experience to know the Colombian conflict or to know the rebels. I've been in this a long time," Langlois said when asked what he took away from his captivity, which occurred just a few miles away. "What I take from it is the conviction that one must continue covering this conflict."

He has been reporting on it for more than a decade for France24 television and the newspaper Le Figaro.

It was not immediately known if Langlois, a bachelor, would fly to France to be reunited with his parents.

The FARC, as the rebels are known by their Spanish initials, sent a letter with him for France's new Socialist president, Francois Hollande.

Langlois made no apologies for accompanying the military. The rebels had criticized him in an early May communique as lending himself to government propaganda by doing so.

"I hope the army doesn't stop taking people to conflict zones, and let's hope the rebels also take journalists with them to show the daily life of their combatants because this conflict isn't being covered," Langlois said.

Three soldiers and a police officer were killed in the morning-long firefight that saw Langlois captured. A guerrilla commander, Calacho Mendoza, said Langlois was lucky because an AK-47 bullet entered the reporter's left arm above the elbow and exited the forearm without damaging bone or cartilage.

Langlois said he watched a sergeant die, just a meter away, during the battle.

Before fleeing toward the rebels, the journalist shed his helmet and body armor that the military had provided. Mendoza said insurgents initially thought because of the military garb that Langlios could be a U.S. or Israeli military fighter.

Mendoza publicly apologized Wednesday that the FARC initially referred to the Frenchman in a communique as "a prisoner of war."

The delegation that received Langlois included French diplomat Jean-Baptiste Chauvin, former Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba and the Red Cross country chief, Jordi Raich. It arrived on rutted dirt roads from the state capital of Florencia in Red Cross vehicles and lunched with the rebels and Langlois on chicken and rice after the handover ceremony.

The group left shortly before nightfall, its departure slightly delayed as Langlois awaited a backpack including the diary he kept while captive.

Residents of San Isidro, which lacks running water and electricity and lives off cattle and coca, slaughtered six calves for the occasion, and rebel commanders gave brief speeches, expressing their desire for peace.

Langlois, who recorded the events with a small video camera, said in a brief speech from the stage that he lamented "we are at a point at which this conflict has become invisible."

It is a war in which there are "neither good nor bad," and in which "the poor are killing the poor," he said.

Before the handover, a public address system played FARC revolutionary songs as farmers converged on the hamlet. Theirs is a region of deep jungles, fast-moving rivers and villages that appear on no maps.

Communal leaders complained of the state's absence: the lack of health care and poor roads that prevent them from getting their crops to market.

Langlois won applause when he said he understood why locals "cultivate their little bit of coca so they can buy bread and notebooks for their children."

Political analyst Alejandro Vargas called Wednesday's event remarkable because Colombians see the FARC so rarely these days, the U.S.-backed military having increasingly driven the rebels into the country's backwaters and across the border into Venezuela and Ecuador.

"I would think that for the average citizen it doesn't have much relevance," he said. "In an armed conflict both parties take whatever opportunity they can to make propaganda and demean the other."

The government of President Juan Manuel Santos, who had from the start demanded Langlois' release, did not immediately comment.

But Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, was among Colombians displeased by the rebel spectacle and suggested Langlois is a guerrilla sympathizer.

"Langlois: journalistic curiousity is one thing, identification with terrorism another," he said via Twitter. "What relation do you have with the FARC?"

Colombia's government suspended military operations in the handover zone for a 48-hour period that ends at 6 p.m. Thursday.

San Isidro's village council leader, German Pena, told The Associated Press before the ceremony that "war is something we experience almost every day."

"There have been innumerable battles in this area," he said. "They think we're part of the guerrilla forces just because we live in this region and for that reason they target us sometimes."

The government says the FARC funds itself largely through the cocaine trade. It has an estimated 9,000 fighters, and recently stepped up hit-and-run attacks on soldiers and police after suffering years of setbacks.

Langlois' capture followed the rebels' February announcement that they were ending ransom kidnapping as a good-faith gesture in hopes of launching peace talks.

Last month, they released what they called their last "political prisoners," 10 soldiers and police officers held for as long as 14 years.

One must be able to spot up and down patterns quickly in stocks they?re watching if he wants to be successful in day trading but one question still remains. ?What stocks should I be watching?? When you are able to master this one technique, then you will be a mile ahead of other day traders who are not using this technique.

For top day traders, they have what they call a ?watch list.? This watch list is the list they?re constantly watching, looking for patterns that indicate it would be a good time to buy. The majority of a successful day trader?s trades come from watching stocks on their watch list.

Do you know what the criteria for choosing a good stock for your watch list?

One important criterion is liquidity. A stock that trades at least 1.5 million shares a day is a good rule of thumb. Even if the stock matches all the other criteria, it does no good if you can?t quickly buy or sell your stock. Looking for this is not really too difficult due to the fact that most good day trading stocks trade in many millions a day. Up to 30 million in one day for the huge liquid stocks. Be sure to avoid the thinly traded stocks. As for the Market Makers, they are able to manipulate their price movement too easily.

Looking at the volatility of stocks is the next thing you would need to do. When it comes to a good stock for your watch list, make sure that it is a highly volatile stock as day trading profits are made when stock values change. Measure and compare companies you?re considering by day, week, and month.

Be sure that high dividend stocks are eliminated as well. In day trading, the more dividends a company pays, the less money they?re re-investing into the company?s growth since it is not considered as a long-term investing strategy.

Once you?ve got a list of candidates, select between five and thirty to put on your watch list. What you can do is start small in the beginning and you can work your way up to more stocks as you gain confidence and experience using your watch list.

This tip alone could earn you thousands of dollars.

Female choice key to evolutionary shift to modern family

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? It is a question that has puzzled evolutionary biologists for years: Why did we stop being promiscuous and decide to settle down to start families?

Sergey Gavrilets, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, may have found the answer, and it lies in the power of female choice. The study reveals how females chose their mates played a critical role in human evolution by leading to monogamous relationships, which laid the foundation for the institution of the modern family.

Using mathematical modeling, the associate director for scientific activities at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at UT has discovered that the transformation may have occurred when early-hominid females started choosing males who were good providers.

Gavrilets' findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The "sexual revolution" entailed males first competing with other males for dominance, as a way to get matings. However, low-ranked males?and eventually all males except those with the highest societal stature?began supplying females with provisions in what is called "food-for-mating" to get a leg up on the competition. Females showed preference for the "provisioning" males, leading males' energy to be spent on providing for females and females becoming increasingly faithful. This spurred self-domestication and the modern family as we know it today.

"This change has confounded scientists for a long time because many species would be much better off evolutionarily if the effort spent on males competing for mates was redirected towards increasing female fertility or survivorship of their offspring," said Gavrilets.

The study demonstrates mathematically that the most commonly proposed theories for the transition to human pair bonding?or coupling?are not biologically feasible.

However, the study advances a new model showing that the transition to pair-bonding can occur when female choice and faithfulness, among other factors, are included. The result is an increased emphasis on males provisioning females over male competition for mating.

"The study reveals that female choice played a crucial role in human evolution," said Gavrilets.

According to Gavrilets, the transition to coupling has opened the path to intensified male parental investment, which was a breakthrough adaptation with multiple anatomical, behavioral and physiological consequences for early hominids and for all of their descendants. It shifted the dynamic away from males competing with each other for sex to males competing with each other to see who is a better provider to get better mates.

"Pair bonding laid the foundation for a later emergence of the institution of the modern family," said Gavrilets.

RIM to cut thousands in restructuring ? reports

Research in Motion, the company that makes the BlackBerry smartphone, is planning a global restructuring that could result in thousands of job cuts, reports say.

Canada?s Globe and Mail newspaper, which originally reported the layoffs on Saturday, said the expected round of layoffs will touch around 2,000 employees, or 12 percent of the company?s workforce.

The newspaper also said the cuts are due to begin on June 1 -- one day before Research in Motion?s first quarter ends. But some expect the announcement even earlier.

A RIM spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports of layoffs. Research in Motion had about 16,500 employees worldwide as of March 2012.

A source close to the company told Reuters the number of impending layoffs could be higher and hit as many as 6,000 employees, affecting Research in Motion?s legal, marketing, sales, operations, and human resources divisions.

?The strategic question is: are you accelerating into a better future or shrinking to a niche operation,? said the source, who declined to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the job cuts.

The job cuts would be the second downsizing in a year for the Blackberry maker as it races to shrink its operations to compete with fierce rivals.

Once a smartphone sector heavyweight, Research in Motion has seen sales fall significantly as it has lost market share to Apple?s iPhone and smartphone makers who use Google?s Android software.

A?string of high-profile departures has hit RIM in recent months. On Monday, the company said Chief Legal Officer Karima Bawa?has resigned and will soon leave the company.

New chief executive officer Thorsten Heins, who took over from longtime co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie in January, is reorganizing the company and plans to streamline operations and save $1 billion in the fiscal year.

Investing 101: How to Use Technical Analysis | Breakout - Yahoo ...

Technical analysis, or charting, is the art and science of graphing past price movements of an asset in attempt to divine their next moves. In a world of sophisticated financial analysis and correlations between various arcane assets, charting is often dismissed as voodoo. Despite claims to the contrary, it's a dirty truth of Wall Street that everyone analyzes charts.

Fundamental analysis is much more important for the long-term. Macroeconomics, as we've seen, can make hash of a graph overnight. Charts are dispassionate and visual. They reduce the noise both in and outside of your head.

Why Use Charts?

Because sometimes they work; which is much better than most investing metrics.

Too much trading is dangerous, but paying more commission is a better deal than pointlessly hanging on for dear life when you can see a sell-off coming. Breakout viewers got a heads up last May when the S&P500 broke through it's uptrend, ultimately falling 19%. There were plenty of missteps in between but losses were always, always, limited.

Your brain will tell you whatever you want to hear in terms of holding on to a losing stock. Prices and graphs don't lie. If trends hold up, you hold or buy on the line.
