Foot fashion is no reason to sacrifice health and comfort | The Daily ...

People will go a long way in the name of fashion. This includes the girls who wear four-inch heels on campus in the middle of winter. Why would students sacrifice their comfort ? and in some cases their health ? for an image?

Students? choices of shoes are some of the more egregious mistakes they make in the interest of fashion.

The idea of a shoe has only been around since the early 20th century. Prior to the 1900s, humans wore minimalist footwear, such as sandals or variations of them. We evolved while walking, hunting and running free of anything on our feet.

Phil Maffetone, a proficient endurance athlete, wrote in his book ?In Fitness and in Health,? ?Did you know that the support systems in almost all shoes can weaken your ankles? And the soft, cushioned shoes of today can harm your feet? How about the height, in other words, the thickness of the sole? The farther above the ground you go in a shoe, the more unstable your foot becomes.?

Your posture and stride also improve when you are barefoot or wearing minimalist footwear such as sandals (but not flip-flops) because so many different muscles that are not normally engaged are used. Being students who spend the good part of our day hiking around a campus that sits on a hill, we might take note of the benefits bare feet provide.

Our feet are some of the most amazing, yet least understood, parts of our bodies. The foot has a dense concentration of nerve endings, and some of the most bones in the body too. However, we seem to think it?s a good idea to take these incredible body parts and lock them away inside a shoe.

In the 2007 article ?Shod Versus Unshod: The Emergence of Forefoot Pathology in Modern Humans?,? researchers found that, ?Prior to the invention of shoes, people had healthier feet.?

This is not to say that shoes are a bad thing. There is a time and place for everything. Here, the principle ?everything in moderation? applies.

What comes to mind at this point is the Vibram Fivefingers shoe, which wraps around the foot and toes like a glove. The Vibram is one of the various minimalist-oriented shoes on the market today. There are also Luna Sandals? huaraches and other sandals that achieve a more minimalist design. Shoes such as the Vibram Fivefingers share two things with bare feet: They are natural and minimal.

Being natural is not such a bad thing. We try so hard to be above the rest of the animal community and distance ourselves from a more primitive self that often sacrifices our health and comfort.
