95% Argo

You really have a place in Hollywood when you've proven that your capable of acting and directing in the same film, and Ben Affleck has done so on many occassions. Argo is this actor using the full extent of his talent, and I hope he continues to make films as intelligent, thought-provoking and well-written as this throwback political thriller. I never imagined him making a film like this giving his past cinematic disasters which includes films like Pearl Harbour and Armageddon. And if you had similar doubts in him until you saw what he did with The Town, believe me afer seeing Argo, you will instantly remember that this was the guy who wrote Good Will Hunting. The film is based on the incredible historical event that is the "Canadian Caper", and what a great set up for a thriller, it's an unspeakably intense period thriller that not only unfolds in it's narrative era but also expires a wonderfully nostalgic sensibility, in that it feels like a film that would have been released during the time the storyline is set. In doing so Affleck demonstrates he understands the conventions on how to make a 60's style, narratively driven crime thriller in the same way as the fantastic and recent adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Next to great style and intense thrills the film also has an array of understated performances. It features an ensemble cast, and not a single actor performs flimsily. From the sleazy comic relief Alan Arkin, to John Goodman's passionate and respectful performance of hero, John Chambers. It isn't as close as it should be to the facts of what really went on, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ben Affleck made one extraordinary story a wonderful cinematic marvel. It's inspirational, beautifully shot, and deadly serious and blackly funny at the same time. One fundemental flaw with the film is in it's confusing overload of characters but crucially, even though it's not as groundbreaking or as profound as the period thrillers it takes it's inspiration from it's further proof that Ben Affleck is one of the best actor turned director's in Hollywood as of now. There's a possibility it will recieve Oscar nominations but I wouldn't count on it completely. It's not perfect, but it's one of the most entertaining mainstream thrillers of the year and boasts the most nail biting final 30 minutes in recent memory.
